Unless that's just what they WANT you to think.

If CoH2 allowed veteran players of CoH to move their characters over, I think that would be another first in a line of firsts for the City of Heroes/Villians games.

At least, I've never heard of such a thing happening before.

you know, i'm not a fan of sequeling mmo's, it tends to fragment the community, and coh doesnt have a community that could handle fragmentation. that said, there have been some developer movements that were suspicious, and i have, in non-coh circles, seen these sort of things being fairly good at predicting things. so my take is to go with the flow. it would be nice not to have cryptic's branding on the game, and no gmae lasts forever, but i dunno, i just cant thing of any mmo sequels that have been as popular as their predecessor, lineage im not sure about, i have heard both ways, that it did disappointingly, and that it did beat lineage 1. but for a western mmo, sequels dont really seem to do well. also, as for me, this will be a ways out, and i'm kind of used to it here (with some champions dalliances) not really looking to start over again, coh1 is where i have my stuff.

Problem is, of course, is that day one you've have 150K+ players with characters at max level, complaining they have no content to play.

The devs would want to wait the traditional 5 days before they got into that situation with CoH2.

Seems this is now hitting the mainstream gaming news sites.

What is that sister company that opened up, Carbine Studios? I bet they are making updated assets for CoH2.

Also, I don't think I've ever seen as much CoH related stuff on Twitter as I've seen in the past 24 hours.

AE Arcs: #10482 N00b Rescue Duty, #164100 The Four Treasures of the Tuatha De Dannan

The registration of CoH2 was just announced, and I'm already at level cap!!11 Nothing to do!11 This is a rip-off!!11
I wans me monez bak nao!!1

But seriously, yup I think it's just a way to make sure nobody snaps the name or somesuch copyright nonsense.
The amount of new stuff coming to CoH is mind-boggling (GR, Incarnation system, Ultra Graphics etc). I don't think there is a need for CoH2, really.

It's important that everyone knows the extended tag line for the game:

City of Heroes 2: A World Without Super Villains (Pfft! Like we shoulda done the first time!)

[Full Disclosure: I would not buy that game.]

I highly doubt that any actual work is being done on the project, because it would be silly to wait so long to trademark the name.
Additionally, there's no guarantee that it will ever get off the ground.

Having said that, I certainly hope it does and I hope it's glorious!
Agreed.

CoH 2 could also just be a placeholder name for the expansion after Going Rogue

Or it could indicate that they're far enough into development that they now feel comfortable taking the first "public" step of development, snagging those trademarks for all to see (and be reported across MMO websites).

Here's a real doom post. What if Paragon Studios licenses the Cryptic Engine to make CoH2?

I doubt it would happen, but if it did ... ugh.

Only this time, they'll be able to build the hatred into the fabric of the game right from the start

Well, it could launch with a higher level cap - like 60 or so - plus have a flashback system from the start too, so current 50s would get 10 levels to play through, plus the new sub-50 content, which would probably have new badges and temp powers attached to it.

Don't even joke about that. The Cryptic engine is bloody awful.

The STO version seems to look better than the first version of the engine - but I'm not sure if it performs better or not.

Carbine Studios has been around for a while. They're doing some sort of next-gen fantasy MMO for NCSoft.

It doesn't. Performance is really inconsistent across the board. I can't play either game for more than an hour without getting frustrated by the constant stops, starts and juddering - something I don't get on any other game. Sure there are solutions, but they just mean every other game suffers and the Cryptic engine doesn't.

Really poorly optimised.
