I for one would look forward to seeing what the current 7+ year veteran CoH devs could do with CoH2. There's a lot of things they could do better (new upgraded Costumer Creator, woo! NEWMAPS NEWMAPS NEWMAPS), there's a lot of mistakes I'm sure Positron would know to not to repeat, Castle could cast a more critical eye over balance than CoH1 ever had (heck, he could even make a separate ruleset for PvP so it isn't lolpvp), and a GOOD launch could bring a good chunk of subscribers. There's only so much buzz that can be generated towards a 6 year old MMO like CoH1, and only so much you can do to try to mutate an old game into looking "new"...but a relaunch of an upgraded and updated CoH? Yes please.

Just so long as NCSoft doesn't rush it--few and far between are the games that can recover from a bad launch before their game tanks.

oh, and don't copy and paste WoW quests. CoX's missions were that great golden place between allowing soloing but still encouraging grouping.

I see a lot of folks speculating how much better a City of Heroes 2 would be with 7 years of experience behind the developers' belts, but experience does not equal content. Sure, the new content would be great, but let's not kid ourselves - it took this game seven years to get to where it is. Do you honestly expect to see the same amount of content in a game that's been in development for, say, a year? All the zones, all the costumes, all the powers, all the stuff... That doesn't just take knowhow and good judgement. It takes time to make. Years, I dare say.

A City of Heroes 2 would be to City of Heroes what UT3 was to UT2004 - a better-looking game with more punch but a lot less actual content. This is the big one, in my eyes. People looking to upgrade to City of Heroes 2 from City of Heroes, the original, will be looking to indeed upgrade, not trade one set of problems for another. They'll be looking to have just as wide a costume selection, just as huge a power selection, just as many places to visit, just as many things to do, and MORE. Ideally, I'd like to see that, but the undertaking would be... Monumental.

tl;dr

It'd take constant development from now till about...2014? 2015? Maybe? to get as much content or near-ish to make CoH2 a patch on CoH as it is now.

Like others here, I don't think the CoH brand is the sort to justify an actual CoH2. Not only is CoX benefitting from years of constant tweaking and development, the players here are steady and loyal, so I'd say NCSoft/Paragon have the right plan with the major content expansions and improvement of the rendering engine every couple or three years.

Creating a new game is a somewhat larger project, with greater risk. Because the current CoX subscriber base is small, the gamble would have to be trying to attract new players who aren't already attracted to the original game.

The situation reminds me a lot of Asheron's Call. One of the very first MMORPGs, AC also had a relatively small but loyal subscriber base, and never had the kind of numbers it's competitors did. So, after a few years and given the opportunity, Asheron's Call 2 was announced -- it would have a more advanced renderer and better visuals all around, plus it would be more like the competing MMORPGs of the moment, with better PvP and more action-oriented gameplay... in short, development would concentrate on everything that the original game overlooked, downplayed and/or did poorly, everything the players were asking for, while taking advantage of the same seamless world technology and original fantasy concepts that made the original game unique.

Asheron's Call 2 was very pretty. It was everything it advertised to be. And yet it was gone in about two years.

The original game is still running...

They're locking the name down, but nothing will be done with it, much like the guy who locked down the rights to the City of Heroes movie... by the way, how is THAT progressing? Oh, wait... it's not.

When we actually see the City of Heroes movie then MAYBE we'll see City of Heroes 2.

This is nothing more than a name-camping.

Ashes to ashes,

Can I pre-order CoH2 please ?

Okay I am sure it may have already been said but....

As I I know was said the name was registered to prevent squatters from making them pay through the nose for the rights to it should they make CoH2, how ever this does not mean they will make a CoH2 any time soon or at all.

Side note if they do make a CoH2 I think given that the free updates for CoH are called issues to keep in line with comic book theme CoH2 should be called "City of Heroes: Vol. 2"

Only if you're prepared to complain later that the pre-purchase for CoH2 is a slap in the face to all the loyal customers.

only if you don't get what you pay for.
