Why is Going Rogue Being Doled Out Piecemeal?

Plus, it's good in-game advertising - it shows off some GR goodies to players who mightn't know about them

The higher price version coming out at a GR release is the Complete Edition, not a collectors edition.

i haven't posted in here yet so here it goes: bye bye. things change as time goes on but seeing as you are not a female(neither am i but at least i understand), you wouldn't fully understand this. anything that can affect the game as a whole, in other words "free" content, will be released as such. UM was never flagged to be included with GR exclusively. i think it is wonderful that we are getting it early.

as for the incarnates, we just found out about those. i think the way they are introducing them is a good thing. that way they can change things based on feedback from us about what works and what doesn't. by doing this, it makes the other 9 that much better while the first can be modified in little steps to insure they have it right.

you know, in scribblenauts 2, they have shoggoths now. they had cthulu in the first, if i find out that nyarlathyotep is in the next one, im going to be very impressed in how utterly nerdy the developers are.

my spell checker just flipped me off.

>_> I would like to bring up that we did not know about the incarnate system much at all until about a week ago, I would also like to mention that the graphical update that came out with city of villains was free for everyone else as well, just like ultra mode. I have not seen any sort of bait and switch and really am quite pleased with what they have been doing so far, heck they just announced ANOTHER 2 sets to be released with GR.

Edit: Ah hell im too lazy, disregard this post.

I'm banking on the assumption that the physical box will include something. Even if I turn out to be wrong, the CE version ($40) comes with a month of game time ($15 value), while the normal version ($30) does not. And since I don't have a burning need to play DP or DS powersets NAO (I was in the DP beta, I may be in the DS beta, and I've already got my focus on a few other MMs on Live), and I have Loyalty Program status. So there's no real incentive for me to prepurchase GR.

So, yeah.
GR: Access to GR
Prepurchase GR: Early access to DP and DS (don't need it), tier 3 access to GR beta (I'm already in tier 2), and access to GR
GR CE: Access to GR, possible physical bonus, and a net $5 gain on purchasing regular GR.

Why have I not heard about this before now???

Actually one drawback to this "release chunks early" approach is that we get gluts of whatever has just been released for 2-3 weeks (there are going to be sooooo many Demons running around whenever i17 comes out) rather than a more varied selection of new characters running about the newbie zones.

THAT is something totally different than Grandville and COV; THAT is bait and switch substitution that occured AFTER consumers paid forward on a preorder and the promise of getting a COMPLETE retail product in July.

And that is a big problem (or its going to be very soon).
The first part of that has been answered by others. Ultra Mode was never intended to be part of Going Rogue, it is just a graphics upgrade available to anyone with a powerful enough computer to run it. You don't need to buy Going Rogue to have access to it, and they never implied that you did. It was also mentioned that if they could release it before Going Rogue, they would do so.

The second part (about the bait and switch) I'm going to address:

The Incarnate system wasn't announced until this past week, WELL after pre-orders were made available. You can't complain about having to wait for something that you didn't even know about when you plunked down your pre-order money.

Not even close to a bait and switch. A bait and switch would be promising you something for your money, and then replacing it with something else after you've paid. They are giving you EXACTLY what they promised you for your money: Going Rogue in July, and access to parts of it NOW. The Incarnate system was not promised to anyone for their pre-order money, and it is just ludicrous to complain that you have to wait for something that was never promised to you.

The OP's post sounds suspiciously like some of the threads that got people banned from the Star Trek Online forums.

Read the whole thread before replying. The OP realized he got his facts wrong.

Rubber Lad gets a lot of credit for his apology in my eyes, more so than people who don't read the whole thread before responding to it, for they do exactly what they're ripping the OP for: being critical based on wrong information.

Not too shabby (if they can stick the July release).

It's funny. I didn't want Dual Pistols but I pre-purchased anyway so there'd be absolutely no delay for Demon Summoning which I do(did?) want badly. Then I tried Dual Pistols and I love them.

Going Rogue is going to be pretty awesome for me based on the news out so far. Is it July yet?

total kick to the gut

This is like having Ra's Al Ghul show up at your birthday party.

That would be awesome but I have a hard time believing they would put it out on a Thursday before a long weekend. I am setting my expectations for July 27 or 28 to avoid disappointment.

Heh heh. Yeah but as one reads the subsequent replies it quickly becomes apparant that the people here are far more civilised than the barbaric hoarde of trolls that infest the STO forums. Even the people that Zombie Man pointed out were making the same mistake the OP did were far nicer about it than the trekkies are.

You'll see gluts no matter when the new shiny comes out. Personally, I'd much rather have people get their "ZOMG new set must play!" cravings out of the way before Going Rogue hits.

At least this means Praetoria won't be completely full of Pistoleers and Demons... just Kineticists and Electrics.

Personally I'm annoyed at how far ahead they advertise. We knew about Going Rogue about a year before it will actually come out. That is just too long to wait for something. I would much prefer they not announce it until a few months before it is released. My excitement for things completely dies if I have to wait that long to get what I originally got excited about.

See, this is the kind of thing that makes my eyes turn around in my head. We spent how long with people making new threads to whine about not having enough Going Rogue info? And now people (obviously other people) are complaining that we're getting too much Going Rogue information too far into the future and we should know less.

And people thing game development is a GRRRATE job

I stand corrected after reading through the thread. It was in May 2009 that we were first told about Going Rogue? So like a YEAR AND A HALF ahead of release date the players were emailed to get them excited about it? Thats just nuts.

Paragon really aren't too bad for things like that. I got my 18 month vet badge in February, and I only started playing CoX to pass the time until Diablo III came out.

Advertising far ahead isn't a bad thing. Except they really haven't done much advertising. But you know...their marketing department is totally awesome, bar none...

In terms of what they revealed(and have yet to reveal) is where I think the problem lies. When they announced GR, we really got nothing much more than a small tidbit. Then when they did Hero Con...we still didn't get too much that was a good indication of the kind of content GR would have.

To date, we mostly have info on powersets and a yet-to-be-clarified endgame system. No one is actually talking about how GR will play as compared to our current content. We still only have peripheral information.

I, for one, don't want to believe that they have revealed the very best stuff about GR as yet. Since what we know is mostly enemy types and powersets. I'll reserve final judgment until I get an idea of what content will be like...and if it will be the same old tired formula that we've had for the past 5 years.

If they stick to what their proposed launch date (July, 2010) is...

14 months =/= 1.5 years

The world is crazy. I offer this as proof; found on a butane lighter: Warning: Flame may cause fire.

I'd also like to note that advertising that far ahead is pretty dang common with expansion packs for MMOs.

Burning Crusade/Wrath of the Lich king/Cataclysm have all be advertisted more than a year in advance.

So if it's good enoug for old WoW, it's good enough for us.
