EU gets shafted - AGAIN!

So reading the thread from Avatea about purchasing the GR expansion I notice that the EU isn't going to get a box.

The specific paragraph is here (emphasis is mine for the specifics):

Quote:
The City of Heroes Going Rogue: Complete Collection costs $39.99 (€29.99 / £26.99) and includes City of Heroes Going Rogue as well as City of Heroes, City of Villains, 30 days of game time, and the Complete Collection Item Pack. With the game time and previous expansions included, it is ideal for those who are new to City of Heroes franchise (perhaps as a gift!), but also a good value for players not interested in prepurchasing. The Complete Collection will be available both digitally and at retail (in North America) starting in July and cannot be prepurchased (only the separate expansion can be prepurchased).
Why is this so? Is the EU held in such low regard? The release of GR would be a perfect time to grow the game globally, and yet the powers that be have decided they are only interested in the yankee dollar and not the Euro or the good old english £. It's one more example of how little importance NCSoft attaches to it's EU client base.

That strikes me as very odd. It's a healthy revenue stream, and other games such as World of Warcraft make sure they are available in every shop. Not just the latest expansion either, but the entire game. Ironically you can still buy boxes of Guild Wars in my local shopping mall but CoH hasn't been seen there literally in years.

It's possible of course that it's logistically difficult to get the product into shops in the EU these days. Could that be because NCSoft gutted the EU offices? Odd that huh, don't you think?

We know where we are now with Paragon Studios. The message is very simple: If you're not in North America, you don't matter.

I saw that as well that we're not getting a box set. After we didn't get an Architect Edition I believed (I can't remember if I read this officially or not) we would be getting a box for the next time around.

I know it isn't 'necessary' but like some I like to collect the box sets, and it would be nice to have a version of the game that you can install from disc without having the download it.

Like I said in the other thread it kind of feels like they have given up advertising the game outside of North America.

If your mouse has greater processing power than your gfx card, the answer is yes.

Well I did intend to prepurchase for my account and get the box set for my wife's account.

Now I will wait and see what is in GR before I commit myself.

In short they could have lost 2 sales.

No, seriously though. I am pretty annoyed by this, but not too bothered as long as I get all my pre-order goodies >.<

By the way, anyone know when we can pre-order?

And I was hoping to get at least one CD .
When I have finally bought computer that can run CoH - there were no CD's available to purchase in stores anymore, so I had to buy it online.

To quote my post on this subject in the other discussion thread the other day:

Okay I am a little irritated by this. Yeah its good that we'll be getting the GR expansion and that there are a number of ways to buy it.

HOWEVER: Once again there is no retail box presence in the EU at all. That is ridiculous. It must be well over 3/4 years since I have seen a single City Of box in ANY shop in the UK at all. Mission Architect was a golden opportunity for you to get some presence back in the market but you said at the time that wasn't going to happen. I understand that some shops would question putting a 5 year old game on the shelves, but you got them to do it in North America so you should be able to do it in the EU. Now another fantastic opportunity to get more players back onto the EU end of things comes along and you're throwing it away?

Sorry guys, but from where I'm standing it seems you're turning away or deliberately digging your own grave in the EU.

Pre-orders start in March.

The only pre-order goodies are early access to the two new powersets, Dual Pistols immediately, Demon Summoning in April. That has resulted in me not bothering with the pre-order since I can live without that. However, they really aren't what I'm interested in as far as GR is concerned and, while I'd quite like a box... well it really just takes up space on the shelf.

I think they'll lose sales in the EU by not having a box, but personally, it really means very little to me.

Then I expect to see no less than an announcement that the US boxed edition is being cancelled as well. If the above is true, then why does the US get a retail presence on the shelves and anyone outside get nothing? What realistic reason is there other than them not caring about trying to market to the EU or other territories?

Quite frankly, when they gutted the EU offices, I knew the writing was on the wall for us outside of the US. When we get access to Betas and updates to the Training Room, I consider ourselves lucky to get those at all. And although grateful, I never expect any more. This announcement was as inevitable as the sun coming up and although not angry, I am disappointed in NCSoft once again.

Best stick together boys and girls, we're pretty much on our own out here.

Whilst I was at first saddened by the news of not having a box to go along with the expansion, I don't really mind so much now. So long as I get to play the thing I'm happy, I just can't make sense of the post and what edition I'll need to buy to make sure I get all the costume pieces and what not. Would be groovy to get a box though to add to my pile of CoH related stuff.

From a certain standpoint I can truly understand how you EU folks feel.

The only way I can see how it would be truly bad is that possible new players couldn't see it at gaming shops, and secondly if there are going to be any goodies in the boxed set ie;maps, posters, figures, etc.

If there is going to be any goodies then I'm going to get the boxed edition,if not I'm goin digital.

Leaving a large client base out in the cold is something I just don't get....

That's basically what Avatea said on the french board, when we had approximatly the same reaction (but we also have a dead server, and all our hope was with the advertising campaign that could happen with GR).

HMV in Leeds have a couple of copies of GvsE for the princely sum of one pound.

Having said that, they also have copies of Tabula Rasa going for £20 and RF Online for £10!

Thanks for the info Beber. I guess that, put in laymans' terms, that means:

"Don't bother marketing to Europe as the cost of distributing boxed sets to stores will be more than the return you'll get from people subscribing."

I have three friends who are avid online gamers and have never heard of CoX. And as already stated, I see other NCSoft products in stores regularly but haven't seen anything City related in years.

Umm no?

Physical media let you reinstall your copy of the game after various levels of catastrophe (PC died, HDD died, Windows went gibberingly crazy and tried to eat its own gall bladder, whatever) without taking a dirty great bite out of your bandwidth.

I don't know about others on this board, but I'm still on a monthly bandwidth cap (40Gb peak, 120Gb off-peak) and I'd personally rather NOT take a bite out of that if I could avoid most of it by shoving a disc of polycarbonate and aluminium into my DVD-RW drive.

(BTW, I'm making an assumption here, which may be misplaced, that the expansion is going to be of significant size, since we'll be getting all new assets for mobs, maps and what have you. I could be wrong. I'd almost like to be wrong, but I'm a pessimist (see .sig))

Not everyone lives in the big city with all the cool cats and all the super high speed uncapped ultra-wide-broadband for £3 per month, some of us live in more rural environs and bandwidth is a limited resource. Physical media still has a very definite use, IMO.

This is why I'm not overly impressed by the lack of hardcopy release in Europe, but I'm not surprised after they gutted the Brighton offices.

Sorry guys, but honestly, I don't think we *are* a large client base. We're *a* client base certainly, but compared to the rest of the US servers, we're a relative drop in the ocean, which has to be colouring their marketing assessments.

If this is the way NCSOFTinthehead treat people from europe i guess i won't be choosing them in future for mmo's.

Don't won't to rant to much as often classed as being nit-picking by NA and apparently they get treated much worse than us anyways rofl.

This really. How can we ever expect to get more people on the EU servers if they don't ever bother selling the damn game over here.

So just merge the freaking servers already and get it over with.

Totally agree with everybody here already. Having it as a download only for EU players is only good for current players.

Its basic common sense that if you want new players to notice your game, then you actually put it on the shelf in stores for it to get noticed!

Now i love the personality of the devs and community reps, wont say a bad thing against them but can somebody please respond to us EU players to give us some sort of insight into whats going to happen to us? Not to be a doomsayer but i cant see many new EU people joining up to our already low population servers when they cant see its out without going to look for it.

Been a good few years since the game been on the shelf, that mean theres a new generation of players to get Go get them!!!!! A lot of us ingame [well the ones i've spoken to on the union server anyway] have all thought that GR will bring a new load of players to our servers. Now it looks like it'll bring very few.

I'll still play and enjoy it but meh
