More stupid Drive-By Buffers!
If I'm standing around drinking a cup of coffee and someone drops some change into my cup, they are calling me a bum (and ruining my coffee) even if they're trying to be nice.
|
A better example would be you are having your cup of coffee... and someone gives you a coupon to get a free coffee. It is helping you do... what you are already doing.
I've performed drive by debuffing on occasion. Obviously only with buffs that deal no damage. The other fun one is on my tank on a couple of occasions when I've sene someone struggling I leap in and use my taunt aura to take all the aggro and then stand there while they beat them up.

interferes with my playstyle", and I'll carry a like-minded sign that says,
"Please don't complain when my Empath buffs you - it's a solo toon and
that's about the only time it gets to use some of those powers".
After all, don't we *both* deserve the right to play our toons the way we like?
Don't assume: it makes an @ss of u & me. |
By the same token, I'll *also* NOT assume you hate buffs either...
So, without any assumptions whatsoever, I'll just play my toon the way
it was designed - as a support character who buffs allies... Since your
toon has a nice blue "friend" box around it when I target you, I *will* buff
you in any situation relating to or about combat if I'm able to lend some
assistance -- if that is a problem for you in-game, feel free to send me a
/tell asking not to do so again...
At that point, I'll make use of our excellent player notes system by 1-starring
you, and reminding myself to watch you die the next time...
See? No problem at all....

Kill-stealing at low levels, now that gets me riled up.
"Hey, I just saved you!"
"No, no you just *took* a chunk out of the exp I woulda got for that ****, and now I have to go find another red-con LT to skip a few more low level bars..."
That I could agree with. It's not a major gripe (it's damn fast to skip through to 5, and thats when things get rolling) But myeah.
For this thread, however;
GG, I would tell you that "I am killing you with my mind", but I couldn't find an emoticon to properly express my sentiment.

Blue side that might make some kind of in game sense at least. I only play Red Side however.
And as a PLAYER, I'd much rather be allowed to fail (and learn to play better) than have someone adjust my play experience at their whim. So, I'm on my Axe WP brute a few months ago in St Martial, testing "how many/tough can I handle at once?" so I can figure out where to put the new difficulty sliders at before I start missioning, and I start targeting progressively larger groups. I'm on a tough group of 10 freaks, and I've whittled them down to only 4 left. It's a close fight, I'm low on INSPs, and I'm on the edge of my seat with the excitement of "will I win or lose?"... ..and some drive by buffer comes by and removes the chance of losing from the scenario for me. Thanks for that. |
Your complaints are ridiculous for the following reason:
The qualities you are looking for, the ability to fight crowds of size and toughness you determine without external aid are features of Single Player games or Solo instance missions.
The game has given you the tools to enable your playstyle (in instanced missions and the AE) and you have chosen not to use them.
It'd be like if I ordered quesadilla and then complained there was cheese on it. I should have ordered tacos without cheese if I didn't want any cheese. It's not the fault of the waiter, the cook, the restaurant owner, the cheese farmer, or anyone else but me that I didn't get what I wanted.

Actually, count me in with Smurch on this; even though my main toon is a kin.
I find drive by buffing very annoying for many of the same reasons he's stated. When soloing, it's an unwanted interference. Please respect my right to play the game my way when I am soloing. You (in general), of course, may play the game any way you wish, as long as it does not interfere with others' enjoyment as well. Don't assume: it makes an @ss of u & me. There have been many times when I was simply testing out some new enhancies or looking for build holes, and an unasked for buff will interfere with that process. I will not thank you for your unkind kindness. Also, for those who are saying go to instanced missions, not all missions are instanced. "Hunt x number of such-and-so" mishes are not instanced. When I'm on a TEAM, I welcome all buffs. And as a kin, I hand buffs out to teammates indiscriminately unless otherwise requested. If I see a solo hero seeming to struggle with a group on the street, I ASK if they would like help... always. |
This.
For the most part I don't mind buffs in combat situations, and like Impish I ask if buffs are wanted.
IF I do resort to doing drive-by's then I restrict myself to dropping inspirations on the person I see in need. That way they are free to use them or not as they see fit, and it doesn't interfere with what they are doing.
This whole silly argument could be rectified if players had the ability to block buffs.
- Accept all buffs
- Allow buffs from teammates only
- Block all buffs
What I find bizarre is the people who drive-by buff me in Wentworth's. Usually right after I arrive. Guys, I'm going to be shopping for a few minutes; the buffs will expire unused.
I don't think it's pure harassment because they could turn on a lot more powers if they were just spamming powers; this looks like regular...although not very well-thought-out...buffing.

Buffing is griefing
War is peace
Freedom is slavery
Ignorance is strength
Having Vengeance and Fallout slotted for recharge means never having to say you're sorry.
So buffing people is griefing? Interesting.
"I'm sorry, I can't bubble you. I don't want to be considered a griefer." |
I've already stated that there is a distinction between TEAM play and SOLO play. Quit trying to twist my words around.
Respect and consideration for other players would dictate that you ASK the SOLO player if they want assistance.
"Want some buffs?"
"sure"
*buff*
"Want some buffs?"
"no ty"
"kk. gl."
It's not about "playing your toon the way it was intended", save that for TEAMing. It's about respect and consideration for other players, especially if you are not teamed with them.

Someone who insists on being solo in an open world is just going to have to make allowances for the fact that there are other people out there. You may not like it, but there are other people out there, and sometimes they want to help without taking that extra step of finding out your mood and inclination.
Want to solo? Play in an instance.

Hmm, now if it could be programmed so those not wanting buffs had say, a purple box, under which those with orange boxes could still affect them but we couldn't... |
on my toon by clicking the icons - I wouldn't be ok with either: a pop-up
box asking to accept the buff OR an options setting.
The former is needlessly annoying, and the latter is too easy to forget to
change when you actually do get on a team or into a situation where you'd
like them.
As for the main issue, and the players who are against unsolicited combat
buffs, at it's core, their position is utterly ridiculous and completely illogical
for the following very simple reasons...
1> It isn't possible to tell if a person wants a buff or not beforehand...
2> The vast majority of players *appreciate* receiving them. Anybody who
has actually played a buffer AT knows this - the Thank You's are 99+%
compared to the negative responses.
3> The buffs, in no way, diminish their rewards in either XP or drops. There is,
in fact, NO practical down side to them.
4> While I respect that a tiny minority of players would prefer to not have
buffs on them during combat, it's nonsensical for me to assume that, because:
A> You'd want us to ask the person who is already in the middle of a fight
(and possibly in over their heads) to take additional time to respond to a
chat question in the midst of this battle ... Nice tactical thinking there.
Apparently, it is easier in your mind to chat with a besieged player than
simply buff them and deal with it politely afterwords if it was unwanted.
Sorry, actual game reality and simple logic takes precedence here...
The old saw "It's better to ask for forgiveness than permission" is true
for a number of very good reasons.
It's akin to asking somebody in a burning building if they'd like us to call
the Fire Dept. While I'm sure the obvious answer is "Yes" - the anti-buff
crowd is taking the position - "No, I have my little fire extinguisher and
I'd prefer to handle it on my own" ... Sorry, I already dialled 911 ...
B> Failing point A, you'd prefer that we don't buff at all - So, the 99+%
of people who would appreciate the help should be left helpless to respect
the rights of the .1% who'd see this as "interference"... Sorry, the needs,
and desires of the many will *always* outweigh those of the .1% -- Ask
the PvP crowd about that...
Or, in the case of the burning building analogy, you'd prefer to let the building
fall on them if they are unsuccessful - sorry, I'm not willing to accept how
I'd feel if they died when I could have called the Fire Dept to help them
but didn't... Nope. I'm not willing to deal with that at all...
C> You want us to respect YOUR right to play your toons that way (in spite
of the mission instances, AE, difficulty slider tools available to you to do
exactly that), while at the same time rejecting OUR rights to play our
buffing characters the way they were designed...
Result: Get used to disappointment - your position is ridiculous, illogical,
and completely untenable, and most importantly - ain't gonna happen...
End of Story - Deal with it.
Regards,

See, the entire point of this is that, yes, most of the time, you are at worst neutral and oft-times actively helpful. But assuming that you are always helpful, and that your aid will thus always be appreciated and sought is a poor assumption, because there does exist another line of thought.
For those that wish to merely solo and be left alone, or whom are testing new builds, new tactics, or other such things, you are actively not helping, and telling us we're wrong for not liking your interference because you are "being helpful" is, frankly, rude.
There do exist people in the real world that object to random kindness - try helping an able-bodied old lady across the street, or paying for a blue-collar worker's groceries. Try forcing a proud conservative to accept government aid - after all, they're "just helping".
You may act with the best of intentions, but that does not mean you are always "helping".
