Hi new here, I have a general question.

Start radio missions in King's Row as early as you can. Get the safeguard before 10th level so you can score the raptor pack. Read up in the Player's Guides on what to expect in a Safeguard.

It's the easiest fastest way to start flying and getting around. It will even allow you to put off the travel power beyond 14.

I accidentally got it on my second character but didn't realize why some got the raptor and others got the zero-g. It took me a long time to realize that level 10 is the key.

1. Don't bother slotting Training Origin enhancements - you're better off selling them to build a nest egg for yourself.

2. Don't be afraid to use Wentworths or the Black Market to sell stuff. A lot of my earliest characters would've probably been a lot richer if I hadn't been too intimidated by the consignment house process to sell stuff there. I still remember the first time I put a Luck Charm on the market. It was about three months after I started playing and it sold for like 90,000 inf. I started bragging to the members of the PUG I was on about my score, and they were like, "Uh, yeah, that's what they always sell for." D'oh!

On second thought, I like my altoholism (over 100 characters, thankyouverymuch!), so screw that noise!
Heh, it's funny, cos when I first played CoH, I had horrible altoholism, and I hated it. I gave up on the game when I couldn't get a character past ~lvl 25. About 6 months later, I decided to give the game another try, and I still had problems getting high level characters, but I realised something: I was having fun anyway. I didn't care that I had 20 level 20 characters, I was still enjoying playing the game.

So, I guess that's my advice, have fun*. Don't fixate on getting characters to the level cap if you'd rather start new ones. Conversely, if you love playing one character, don't feel pressurised by us altoholics to create more. If you like hanging around in AP doing cossie contests instead of fighting mobs, do that. Don't feel you have to play in a particular way. Don't build your character in the "right" way if the "wrong" way is more fun for you to play.

Play the game, find out what you enjoy the most, and do that.

*(with the caveat that you shouldn't act in a way that stops others having fun - for example, you might love running into groups of enemies with whirlwind on, and by all means, do so, but not when you're in a team).

Welcome to City Of Heroes/City Of Villains!

Lots of good advice in this thread. The only things I have to add are:

  • Feel free to make use of VidiotMaps.com to see maps of the zones, or even print them out. You can also download a map overlay with information like the locations of Exploration Badges, what enemies spawn in each part of each zone, and at what level, and more.
  • Have you found a favorite AT (Archetype, like Scrapper or Defender, or the like) you like to play? Head to that AT's section of the forums. That's where you'll find the experts for those ATs, and they can answer just about any question you have.
  • As you've discovered, Player Questions is a great place for asking General questions. We're all more than happy to help.

And finally, the most important bit of information:

Have fun!

Agree with UberGuy, although I'll make a possible exception for Brutes. Brutes need to keep fighting, to keep their inherent power, Fury, as high as possible; it takes endurance to keep fighting. Fury supplies so much damage that lower-level Brutes can get by without slotting damage enhancements until they have enough slots to do so comfortably.

Inspirations drop constantly, and none of them are hard to obtain, so don't feel bad about using them. In fact, don't even feel bad about "burning" some (using them or deleting them) to make way for better ones.

I always keep a column of blues and a column of greens. I also try to keep a column of purples around, because even though you'd think grabbing greens would be the best idea for hard stuff, purples offer much more safety and mitigation. Protip: 4 purples will give you the maximum possible evasion no matter what toon or sets you're playing. So if you're up against a hard boss or EB, using 4 purples will give you a huge advantage.

Learn to use inspirations, since even just burning random ones as you go can speed up kills, and having a pocket of them will let you get through difficult content.

Welcome to the game.

Take the time to actually read what your contacts are telling you, especially the arcs. The Dev's took the time to write many great stories for us to play out, it'd be a waste to just blow thru them.

Explore ALL of the zones when you have time.

Have Fun!!!!!!!!

Focus on you, not other people.

What does this mean? It means that ultimately, what YOU like is paramount compared to what other people TELL you is worth liking. If you roll a scrapper and *shudder* don't take Super Jump as a travel power, don't let people make you regret it if you're actually enjoying your alternate method of transport.

DO listen to their opinions. THEN review how it makes you roll in the game. You'll learn the tricks of the trade soon enough; don't get pigeonholed into one viewpoint when there are multiple ways to look at a problem. Sure, there ARE wrong ways to do things. You'll learn those lessons no matter what.

Have FUN. It's why you bought the game. Do that, and your investment will have returned itself tenfold.

My main IOed out Brute has Hover/Fly even though she can't use Hover in combat due to being Elec.

You can also just go buy one in Firebase Zulu, as long as you can scrape up the 10,000 influence.

Even for a newbie, getting 10k influence can be much easier than actually getting to Firebase Zulu.

If at all possible, keep a slot open for new inspirations to drop, even if it means using one when you don't really need to. Particularly, clear out the low-tier insps until higher ones drop, and keep those. It's a steady flow as long as you have one open slot; it dries up when you're full.

Buddies can pass you critical inspirations in combat...IF you have one or more open slots. Many times I will quickly drop a purple or green inspire on a teammate who is in desperate straits, but it's wasted effort if the dreaded "does not have room" message comes up.

But you know what's REALLY a waste? Trying to give someone an Awaken inspiration and getting the "does not have room" message. I feel like saying, "Dude, you're dead, what were you saving them for?"

Ahem. Not that I haven't been dead with a full inspiration tray myself many times...but at least I'm embarrassed when I realize it.

Sell invention salvage and recipes at Wentworths/Black Market when your storage is full - this'll give you all the inf you need for basic (TO/DO/SO) enhancing of your powers. Don't worry too much about crafting enhancements (basic or set IO's) until you've got your bearings and know what you're doing. When you have more experience with salvage and recipes you'll learn which ones sell for a pittance at the auction house and which would be better off sold to a vendor for more inf. It's best to check if you're not sure - there's no point in vendoring a multi-million inf recipe by mistake.

Also, be aware that there's diminishing returns on the enhancements you slot. Once you're in the region of 3 SO's worth of enhancement for a single attribute (e.g. damage) any additional enhancements of the same type give much less benefit. Unless you really, really, really want another couple of percentage points of damage or recharge or whatever, don't slot beyond 3 SO's worth.

Note: TO's (Training Origin enhancements) are available from level 1, DO's (Dual Origin) are available from level 12 and SO's (Single Origin) are available from level 22.

Yep, no argument. At low levels, Fury really makes Brutes stand out above their peers. It helps immensely that, at the earliest levels, all the ATs have similar damage modifiers. So Brutes deal about the same inherent damage scale as everyone else... but get Fury on top at a time when enhancements are really weak.

Space bar = jump (Hey! Leave me alone! My first MMO was FFXI!!!)

Untill you get into SO range (lvl 22), slot attacks with ACC & ENDRED.

Don't slot brawl.

Don't slot rest.

Read the forums (AT sectionf or the AT you're playing).

It's not as hard to find a team as people seem to make it out to be.

I'll agree with all the others on "use your inspirations!"

Pop a Break Free inspiration right after using an Awaken and you can move and react right away. I always keep a Break Free to pair with an Awaken on me.

Also, you can combine 3 of the same type inspiration to make 1 other inspiration of the same size (tier); right click on one of the inspirations to see the conversion list. This works even when defeated (useful if you've died with a full tray and need to make room, or make an Awaken <cough>, see point one above.)

Heh, my level 50 brute is /elec armor and I have fly as a travel power (although I took air superiority instead of hover).

Nearly all of my scrappers have hover/fly, and if they don't then they have superspeed as a travel power. I almost never have combat jumping on any scrapper (and I have a lot of them, and they are not suffering from the lack of Combat Jumping, thanks.)

To reiterate what a lot of people have said, but maybe in a different way: Pool Powers can look enticing, but very few of the pool power attacks are worth having (Air Superiority is one of the exceptions since it has a high chance of knocking an opponent down and that can be very useful). You don't need multiple travel powers. Some of the more boring-sounding Pools are actually quite useful -- Stamina especially (part of Fitness pool). There are exceptions, and it isn't ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY as some will insist, but most ATs benefit tremendously from having Stamina.

(Also the earliest you can get Stamina is level 20, and you will have to pick up two other powers from that pool before then.)

Generally speaking your main primary and secondary power sets have a lot of useful powers that you will want to take and that are better than any similar Pool Power. When I see a new player that has multiple Pool Power attacks or travel powers and not very many powers from their primary, I wince a little. ^_^

Not to mention, if you shell out $10 for the Martial Arts pack, you get Ninja Run for all of your characters at level 4 without picking up any extra powers, and NR is on-par with Fly as far as speed goes.

As far as slotting attacks, and the End reduction vs. Damage...

If you are frequently running out of Endurance, slot for Endurance reduction in your attacks/controls/clicks. These are your biggest source of end drain.

And for leadership toggles, first thing I slot is at least one EndRedux IO or DO or SO, because for toggles they are kinda end heavy.

There are two tram lines, the Yellow Line(Atlas Park, Galaxy City, Kings Row, Steel Canyon, and Skyway City) and the Green Line (Steel Canyon, Skyway City, Talos Island, Independence Port, Croatoa, Brickstown, Founder's Falls).
Even if you've never been to a zone before, the tram will take you there.

you can separate the map from your navigation bar by clicking the small "button" on the left side of the bottom of the map window.after that you can place your mouse cursor on the edge of the window to move it to the side of yer screen and cursor to the corner to shink/grow yer map's size.now you never have to get lost. close it by hitting the button on the right or pressing the M key.
if u want to use a game pad .its no big deal. u dont have to download game specs from 3rd party software. just plug it in before u log in and then, in-game, go to menu>options>keybinds> and then set them up how you want.
Also, by default the R key is AUTORUN, which means u will run strait ahead like a bat out of hell, facing south, on the cover of a meatloaf album. this will earn u HATE on a team. to avoid that, erase the key bind by typing "<frontslash> R NOP."frontslash is a key on your key board. we are not allowed to type it directly as we would IN-GAME on the forums. You'll figure it out.
welcome to the world.

Um...what? Sure we are.

::waits for lightning bolts to rain down from Posi::

Nope, must be okay to type binds verbatim on the forums. Where did you get the idea it's not allowed? Go look at the "Compiled List of Binds" thread sometime.

And OP, some people choose to remove the "auto-run" feature from their "R" key in this way, but others don't. Make sure you want to do it before you remove the pre-bound function (it's not impossible to re-bind the key to auto-run, but if you don't want it unbound you might as well not have to fix it).
