Hi new here, I have a general question.

What's the one thing that you wish someone would have told you when you first started out? I have played other MMORPG's before so I have a little experience. What specifically about this game should I know?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Don't rush to Level 50. Nothing special there.

Don't worry about the Tank/Healer/AoE triad when teaming.

Everyone can solo, some faster than others but with the difficulty settings, everyone can solo.

Yes the zones can look empty, because nearly all missions are instanced. However you can find groups near zone entry points and the consignment house.

It's a consignment house, not an auction house. You state the minimum price you are willing to take for an item you are selling and you are listing the price you are willing to pay for an item you are looking to buy.

The tram stations in CoH have two entrances, the smaller one is exit only.

Again, no rush to 50. Enjoy the city or the isles, read the mission text and have fun.

Don't read the forums if you're enjoying the game. Wait until you've played a while and are hardened, jaded burnouts like the rest of us and we can't spoil your fun anymore no matter how much we tell you you're doing it wrong.

And you're going to have to live with those pants for a while, you might want to think about that costume before entering the tutorial.

Hmm, let's see.

* Turn off Sprint in combat. It burns through your blue.
* Just because your Scrapper can take Maneuvers at level 6 doesn't mean you should.
* Teaming is faster than soloing, and will teach you a lot.
* The best way to make money is to have a catgirl schoolgirl outfit and use /e panhandle in Atlas.

That's about all I can think of! Welcome to the game!

* Fitness pool. You don't need Stamina AT level 20 [earliest you can get it and you need two powers from Fitness first] but you probably want it by level 24 or so.

*If you have a toggle power that says things like "Protects from Sleep, Hold, Knockback and Disorient" you very likely want that toggle as soon as possible. You don't need to run it ALL the time [until you get to about level 30, anyway] but when you need it, you probably need it a lot.

* The best team/fastest way to 50/most stompy character is the one that you enjoy most.

All the above is excellent advice. I'd especially underline getting the Fitness Pool ASAP. I have gotten into the habit of grabbing what's available as soon as they become available. If you add Combat Jumping as well, and slot both swift & hurdle properly, you're already almost as fast as some travel powers. Both Stamina & Health grant a noticeable improvement soon as you get it, and in later levels if you don't have them your toon will behave as if its already past its prime.

If you find yourself on a team w/power players who are only interested in leveling up, don't try to convince them that it's not about the destination it's the journey. They know all that and they don't care. Just hang w/them awhile and try to look at the game from their perspective. Barrelling through a map of nothing but Freakshow or Council is actually pretty fun, even if there's zero roleplay involved.

If you find yourself on a team of players more interested in acting out some preconceived drama as if they're a really twisted and disturbing puppet show for kids on quaaludes, don't make fun of them and tell them how stupid they're being. Hang out and walk in their shoes for awhile. See if you can join in a bit and follow along with what they're doing. Different people come into this game for different reasons, and it's always the people themselves who make this game really interesting. Otherwise, we'd all still be playing Quake 3.

At your earliest convenience, if you notice you can't get on a team and the missions you currently have don't interest you, I strongly recommend this challenge as a new player. Take a character that is under level ten, and starting at either Atlas Park or Galaxy City, try to figure out how to get him to Peregrine Island and back without asking for direct help like teleporting or whatever. This is harder than it sounds for ppl first starting out but once you get the hang of how to do this, you will come to understand the geography of Paragon City more clearly so later when you have a point A and a point B and less than five minutes you won't sweat it. Another thing you'll learn, all baddies in the game have an invisible zone around them which is what some vets call Agro, and if you're careful you can run around them without triggering them off and dying. I'll give you a clue, if you run down the middle of a street and follow the yellow line, you can sometimes use the yellow line to help you gauge where the agro bubbles are around each baddie. I didn't really understand how this works the first four months or so playing this game. Somebody stranded me once on Peregrine Island after SKing me, and at like level 9 I had to figure out how to get BACK to Galaxy City on my own. So I learned these travel tricks the hard way, but they later became indispensible. You can also experiment with this in The Hollows or Faultline before you hit your teens but it's not as rewarding when you accomplish it.

Of course nowadays you young whippersnappers get temp travel powers via police scanner missions and stuff, so the days of trying to do Positron with just Sprint are mostly over. Consider yourselves lucky.

Sadly, this isn't entirely untrue. I had just finished buying the last (purple) recipe for my scrapper's build, and was lamenting the sudden lack of cash by using panhandle, and a few people tried to give me upwards of 3 mil...

Welcome to the game!

Most of what I was going to say has been mentioned already.

Here's one I can add: there's a "City" Tab on your map that will show the locations of the zones in the city, and their connections and train routes to them (well, except for the new trains to Founders Falls and Skyway).

While we're talking about power choices...

Limit the number of Power Pool powers you take (available at level 6 on). My very first character back when I started in the beta got as high as level 14... and I had Flurry, Air Superiority, Jump Kick and Hover on him. Thankfully that all got wiped when the game launched and I had no choice but to start over.

If your main character so far is a Scrapper, make sure to take your defense powers and slot them properly... especially your toggles, as they're several times more effective than the automatic powers.

And if your first Scrapper has Super Reflexes as a secondary, you might want to shelve that character for a bit and play with Willpower or Regeneration until you can start to understand how important defense is and get some experience using some of the invention set enhancements that are available later in the game. (Super Reflexes is a great powerset for those that put time, energy and influence into their builds, but you'll fall flat quickly if you don't treat it with the respect it demands.)

Let's see... what else... if you like playing a support character (Defenders especially, but also true of Controllers and Corruptors), make sure you take the powers that give bonuses to your teammates. This will ensure that you'll always be in demand. Kinetics is especially popular with its Speed Boost ability, and Radiation Emission is great for its ability to increase your teammates' effectiveness while simultaneously decreasing that of your enemies. And let's face it, you just can't go wrong with an Empathy (or Pain Domination, if you're playing a Villain) healer.

Don't play a Tanker like a damage dealer. You might have a few really good attacks depending on your attack set, but the recharge on those powers is typically tremendous, leaving you with several weaker attacks to use while waiting to use them again. A Tanker is there to absorb damage and keep enemies from beating up the weaker ATs, and again, are very popular on teams. Many people consider them to be the easiest class to play when first learning the game, since you'll die less often due to your superior resilience.

Above all else, don't be afraid to ask questions.

Accuracy I can agree with. Endurance reduction I strongly disagree with. Damage slotting increase damage/time and damage/endurance equally. Slotting endurance reduction increases damage/endurance only. You are provably better off going for damage first, because you need to defeat your foes not only before your blue bar empties, but your green bar too.

In this game, healing is not as important relative to other survival tools as it is in many other MMOs. Ally buffs and foe debuffs usually have much stronger initial effect - healing is useful for covering the stuff that still gets through these effects. A team that relies on buffs and debuffs primarily to counter foes will be far more effective than one that relies primarily on heals.

You may hear the above advice translated as "healing sucks" in CoH. It does not. It's just not the most powerful tool in the arsenal of support characters. It remains useful - it's just good to know where it stands in the spectrum of tools available.

Welcome to the game!

"Stop making all those new characters, you'll never get anywhere in the game!"

On second thought, I like my altoholism (over 100 characters, thankyouverymuch!), so screw that noise!

I will repeat what a few people have already said just to drive the point home. Take Stamina, take it early. If you do you won't need to slot any end reduc in your powers. And yes slot for ACC before DAM.

My General Tips:

  • Paragonwiki is your friend
  • Don't be afraid to ask Questions
  • Always run through the Tutorial (either side), it's worth the time
  • You don't need Sprint on all the time
  • Have your Pre-reque Travel Power chosen at 8, 10, or 12. So you can take your Travel Power at 14
  • The Fitness Pool is your friend as well

I think that's about it.

Thank you for the time...

With the Jet and Jump packs temps available, I don't think taking travel powers at 14 is quite as critical. YMMV.

In regards to what Father Xmas said about not rushing to 50, don't take that to mean there's no "endgame". The first time I was told that I was very concerned with "endgame" material because having also played other MMOs (mainly FFXI and WoW) I just remember grinding to max lvl to actually get to the "real" game. In CoH one thing that I think sets it apart immediately from the others is that lvling is actually an enjoyable experience which is why you have people with numerous lvl 50 toons. I have a friend with a few (I think 13) 50s and from what I've seen there's plenty to do at 50 but the bulk of the game as with any MMO is lvling it's just that again, it's enjoyable here.

I would love to comment on what specifically can be done at 50 but to further exemplify how awesome just lvling is my highest lvl toon is only 33 becuase I can't stop making other new ones to play around with which is another thing... give in to altoholism. You will see that word a lot I have yet to meet anyone in game, in real life or on these forums that doesn't have at LEAST 5 toons. So try out different ATs and even several different power set combos of the same one, I have 3 blasters that I actually play and they all play very differently.

One last thing, someone earlier mentioned teaming is better than soloing which I want to reiterate. Aside from learning about other ATs and how the one you happen to be playing functions on a team and getting more xp... it's just more fun, never forget what the second "M" in MMO means. You will occasionally get into a team that might not be the best you've ever played with, but for the number of teams I've been on, I have yet to run into a situation like in other games (FFXI especially) where there's a wipe and 2 or more people start bickering over who's fault it was.

Welcome to the game!
