I think the number of abusers was probably overstated. The squeaky wheel makes the whole cart sound squeaky, or some such.

However as others have said without comments the whole rep system is pretty much pointless. The various rep farmers means that the numerical rep value has no meaning whatsoever and didn't pretty much from the start. On the other hand I used the comments as a means of signifying my approval of a particularly good post (or a cool looking avatar) without needing to clutter up the thread.
Ditto towards the bolded part. But I don't expect the powers-that-be to move back towards the previous direction.

Even though I'm sure they "tweaked" out the comments to ease their workload, I'm bummed that I won't get the anonymous kudos and karate chops any more. Oh well.

They all laughed at me when I said I wanted to be a comedian.
But I showed them, and nobody's laughing at me now!

Precisely. Kind of silly to hide the comments while at the same time still being able to leave them, IMPO, especially if the desire is to reduce the rep system to a simple "like/dislike" system.

Just had a thought or two.

Removing the commentary on individual posts, but leaving the effect of accumulating +/- points towards a poster shifts the focus of Rep away from a critique of a post, and more towards a critique of the poster themselves. Not the direction I'd want to go.

Also: being a forums moderator seems like a tedious, thankless job. Like a babysitter who isn't allowed to smack us (even though they can put us in the Time Out corner if we get too unruly).

That was the only good thing about the system anyways.

Especially since I've gotten some nasty Neg Rep comments on some really old posts. Are you suggesting Bubbawheat that we go through every post we've made to check the rep comments?

At this point, the Rep system seems more useless than it did before. At least I could get a bit of amusement easily by looking at the Rep comments, whether positive or negative.

If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

I agree with that. Also given the rep farming that's going on the usefulness of rep as a judge of character is pretty much pointless anyway. When I see someone with a long row of green lights I have no clue if it's because they are a wonderful human being who regularly contributes well written insightful posts or if they've just been playing the rep farming game (this isn't directed at anyone in particular it's simply an observation).

Well, now that a vicious troll has more difficulty seeing "Post is based on false assumptions, false statements, vitriolic rants and is clearly intended as trolling.", I can still leave that comment, but would be better off putting that particular message in the little triangle just a tiny bit to the right of the Reputation scales.

You're right.
And while you weren't aiming at anyone in particular, I just happened to be an example of that.
I had two red -rep statements that were identical (and thus from the same poster) on the same post. Not sure how they did that.
I had one grey and a good-sized stack of green comments.
But I also posted once in the rep farming thread, and got plenty of green from there.
My resulting number is quite meaningless, and I have no shame in admitting that.

For some, thier stacks of green or red are entirely earned on the quality of thier posts.
Some green is earned, some green is given for lulz.
Likewise, some red is earned, some is given from spite.

the comments, linked to the post that generated the rep, gave the system context.

Absent context it is completely pointless.

This makes me a saaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad panda.

Hey Niv, any chance that you can flip the switch on an off per account so that those that WANT to still see their comments in one big lump can?

That would be nice. The comments in my +rep are good for my self esteem.

I actually quite enjoyed the -rep comments more. Not only because they were more interesting but because they HAD to say something to leave the rep. Even a period is more interesting than no comment at all!

I'd called that removed to make life easier than listening to complaints.

Tweaked seems somewhat of an misleading understatment.

So no one can see positive comments either.

I see the tweak as a reposnce to the over sentisitive and overly loud.

I don't suffer from altitis, I enjoy every minute of it.

Thank you Devs & Community people for a great game.

So sad to be ending ):

The rep system lost all its entertainment value with the removal of the comments. Big thumbs down to this change..

But I expected the whiners with their bruised egos would get it shut down eventually. Oh well.

I miss the 2 +rep comments I'd gotten. No more anonymous cheer-ups.

Whoever said that the +/- rep without thread context renders the system (more) meaningless is dead on, +rep for you!

I didn't often get -rep. But when I did the comments were just human idiocy, which is hardly enlightening.

My plus rep comments were great though. Nobody was forced to leave them. I got them because someone wanted to be nice to me.

Doesn't this just mean it'll be easier to rep grief people you don't like, since there's no evidence of it, no way to track it, and no way to report it?
