I love the -rep comments. It makes posting more fun when I know I might piss off some passive aggressive type who will nerd rage my rep. Plus, I regenerate even when burned.

All in good fun.

So, how are we supposed to know that? According the the forum FAQ:
What is reputation?
Reputation is a way of rating users depending on the quality of their posts. If the administrators have enabled reputation, then the reputation icon will be visible in posts.
So, it can't be used for it's purpose according to the forum providers. So, it's useless as a 'communal quality control.' It's just a game.

Well, judging it as a game, it's useless. It's just dots without meaning. If we were *really* to game it, we can get teams to 'go after' certain posters to turn their dots deeply red. And then that would get disciplined as harassment.

And what game encourages anonymous taunts and criticisms? This is forum PvP in it's truest sense since it sets players *against* players rather than friendly competition.

So really, it's less than useless -- it's harmful.

Mods, turn rep off for good.

I've turned mine off and am never going to check any comments again and never going to give anyone +/- rep again.

Oh, if you you think Tags are a forum game too, and aren't going to edit out the silly ones, then get rid of Tags, too.
Unfortunately, it seems as though this is yet another attempt to foster a "can't we all just get along?" attitude rather than an "I disagree with you, and here's why" attitude. I can understand taking action against hateful rep comments, but I'm guessing the majority of the "You're an idiot" comments are completely sincere and the poster probably deserved them.

Just turn rep off already, if it's that much of a problem.

how can something be meaningless if there is punishment associated with it? whats the corresponding reward for only giving positive rep?
im glad you made this thread, niv forgot to post a discussion thread about the announcement. would i be wrong to neg rep her for that? possibly get forum banned?

People can still rep and leave comments even if you have it "turned off".

Also, the comment page DOES NOT STAY CLOSED, even if you have rep "turned off".

Having rep "turned off" ONLY means that others can't see what level rep you're at.... it does not actually turn the FUNCTION off.

Therefore, it is not completely optional.

Playing on the Forum Games threads is optional.

Leave a tool out for the trolls to use, and it will get used. duh.

Just disable the function completely, it's divisive and does not contribute to the forum community in a positive manner.
And what noitice does it give you. Is there some sort of pop up to let you knwo you have comments. Is there a public display of comments. Is there a bolded "new comments" near the top of the screen. If you look for comments you will see them.

It's like being offended the city has a dump 5 miles form your house that you can see if you look through the entry road as you drive past to work.

If people actually feel griefed by one red bubble, they should consider the fact that green bubbles are worth maybe twice as much rep when given. Take a look at how many people have red rep....it's that easy to turn someone from red to green. I've been bouncing them back daily.

Strange as it may seem you CAN make negative comments without them being sexually explicit, harmful, threatening, abusive, defamatory, obscene, hateful, racially or ethnically offensive; obscene or contain vulgar language.

Anyone that can't follow those simple rules deserves punishment.

No she didn't. She simply announced the forum rules apply to rep comments and will be enforced. No discussion is necessary. The aren't asking for our opinion. Obey the rules or suffer the wrath of the Mod Stick.

If you use your User CP to check on threads that you have subscribed to, the rep comments are right there.

Sometimes they are closed, sometimes they are open.

They do not STAY closed. It is not a matter of "looking for them"... they will be there whether you want them or not... hence, NOT OPTIONAL

It's more like being annoyed. There is some little troll that has been stalking the Protector forum for quite a while now. It started with one starring every thread until five star threads dropped to one. We stopped starring threads in the end. It now moves onto tags and -rep. The trolls will dig up a random post and neg rep almost everyone. For instance, there is a post about reviving an old coalition, everyone that has posted in the thread has gotten neg rep just because they posted. I personally have gotten neg rep because my "server is offensive", because CO is a "waste" (like I designed the game or something), and my favorite was for being an "exploiting cross posting n00b" because I pointed people on my server to a patch note. Now because of the warning, I am sure that these unloved children will continue but without comment.

I can understand that...but honestly if all they can do is -rep people they will probably move on sooner or later.

Trolls get more joy out of people's responses to their actions than the actual actions themselves.

Agreed 1000%. I get lots of entertainment out of the neg rep comments I get. I suppose I can understand to a certain extent how some folks might be bothered by such things, but they shouldn't let such mindless drivel get under their skin so easily. Grow some thicker skin.

I like reading some - rep comments but there all now

"FU you stupid rep farmer" kind of thing.

I never understood Rep really. I don't even check mine and I don't even know how to raise/lower someone elses rep.

Click on the little scale on the bottom, below the poster's name.

I've pointed out stupid -rep comments I've recieved, in the hopes the person supplying them would have the balls to voice their opinions that we may discuss why they feel my comments have negatively affected discussion on the boards. Yet to get one (not that I've many at all either way...not that I'm that bothered) that's not had the comment reveal the lack of knowledge of the poster.
I do like being able to up people's rep for good posts though.

@craggy see me on Union for TFs, SFs (please!) or just some good ol fashioned teaming.

Right there with nothing below them forcing you to scroll down that far if you don't want to.

Subscribe to a few forum sections and those will be perma listed, forcing the nasty horrible comments that you can't look away from with a prybar out of view.

Or, you know, just not look.

Correct. And it was disabled for EXACTLY the same reasons the mods are warning about for THIS system.

Hence a useless repeat of history as far as I'm concerned.

Just get rid of it.

EDIT: I wonder if the mods feel the same way about the tags. lol

EDIT2: Meh. I'll just continue to ignore the comments in the User CP page. Trolls have at it.

Not trying to be a jerk Lemur but isn't that the same thing as saying that since there is a profanity filter in the game whose default setting is on, players should be allowed to say whatever they want, and people shouldn't get offended because they have to make a choice to turn off the filter to see what profanity is being said.

You know, just not look.

Don't go putting words in my mouth. I never said that I personally don't check my comments.

I am simply saying that Mr. No Pants statement that the system was COMPLETELY optional is NOT COMPLETELY correct.

I have been trying to explain that the system is only MOSTLY optional.

For it to be COMPLETELY optional, the "turn off" option should actually turn off the rep FUNCTION for the person who so desires it.

My personal OPINION is that the system is not being used "as intended", has become a point of contention (this thread & several others as proof), has become a "mod sink", and does not contribute to the purpose of forum discussion.

I like having shiney green dots beside my name. I get as much neg rep as anyone, probably more since I am a huge *******. But it doesn't bother me, I'm still way, way, way ahead.

And yet here you are discussing something that requires no discussion. hmm.

Turning it off was one of the first few things I did with the new forums. One look at it told me it'd be nothing more than an outlet for abusive little ragamuffins to toy with.
