Elitism

I don't want to make this into some kind of rant but i really do think that some people in this game are getting more and more of an Elitist attitude.

Some think that because they've been here longer or played the game a while, it is their right to treat everyone else like idiots, Like they're lower than they are just because they don't play 7 days a week. I have a dear friend who is relatively new to the game and i'm doing my best to teach her all about it. However she is scared to death of teaming with some people because if she makes a single mistake or doesn't do something, they treat her like the worlds going to end and that she's a world class idiot, When really she's just new to the game and is learning the ropes.

It's not just in game either, on these very forums there are people that really believe they can dismiss any topic and tell people to get lost just because They have been here longer and therefore have discussed the topic before. We wonder why we get few new people and i for one believe it's for this exact reason.

I'm in no way intending to tar everyone with the same brush, i'm sure there are just as many good people out there who do their best to help others, I certainly try my hardest to help new players. I just feel like there are some that automatically think that Age = Wisdom, which i'm sorry is just not the case. A more understanding attitude would go a long way imho, to making this game better all round.

I just had to get that out before i go eat my Sunday Roast <3

The above is only my opinion, please don't hate me for it

I tell new plays we meet in game or get to join to sign up to our coalition forums and stear well clear of these ones.

The big problem here is that the people you're directing this post at are already convinced their opinions are best, so won't take any notice of it.

While anyone that might read it and take it on board are the people that aren't inclined to act elitist in the first place.

Given that the OP was taking about nothing like that (he was raising issues about the behaviour in-game), it seems the one other thing you want to get into it gratuitous attacks.

Enjoy the lunch.

Edit: As Stase pointed out, I overlooked that the OP did mention forums too - my bad, and apologies (too late now to delete my text and pretend it never happened!).

Still, I do have to disagree with the idea that new posters are guaranteed a hard time here. New posters that post something plain stupid/rude, yes, but even then I'd say things are fairly restrained by internet forum standards. Of course, as a regular poster I have to admit I could be a little subjective here...

Well put A!
If you invite people you don't know, don't expect them all to be experts, but possible future experts. If you can't handle that, then do not invite unknown people even if they're lvl 50.

I've stayed away from PUGs for quite some time, but lately I've started playing some random ITFs and even heroside stuff. Even with a couple of failed ITFs I've still enjoyed it. Yes, I was a bit put off by people not caring to get/collect purple insps for the last fight and not listening even when I brought in a second account to fill up their trays, but even without the 25 merits I still enjoyed it and hope they all learned something from it.

Yes, I too have made fun of people that doesn't quite know the game, but that's what private chat is for, advise to the new ppl and random LMAO's to other team mates to keep the spirit up without trashing the poor dude we're mentoring.

I do understand people blowing a fuse when they end up in an epic TF fight never finishing due to people not listening, repeating the same team whipe over and over again because some people just never ever learn or listens, not to mention repeated blind invites, ignoring the tells you send them, but that has nothing whatsoever to do with new/old players or language barriers. Still, better just ignore that go berserk.

As for the forum... stay away during weekends!
It's better now, with Bridger gone, and the BFA (Bridger fanboy association, also known as the for..(cencored) a bit quieter)
Now, if we could just get animated hair, even GG might cool down a bit.

[/ QUOTE ]Very true, a lot of "veteran" players still don't understand how the game works.

New players making mistakes is fine, as long as they're willing to learn.

I think we can safely say that the majority of us have at some point or another fallen foul to the thought of "iv been here longer so therefore im right".
In my opinion its healthy and good for the soul to have some form of "elitism/ego", now i agree that too much is bad and detrimental (oh thats so a spelling mistake but oh well) for all of us but surely a small amount is good?

You can look at the argument two ways really.
Firstly that when a new player joins a large community they usually seek out the players that have been around the block a few times to help them out and give advice. Its the thought that once youv been playing the game for *** number of months that you should know quite a bit (how ED works, drops, some form of power mastery etc) and are therefore inaway deligated (spelling again? its early ok) to help out your fellow new players. This will enhance the gaming experience for the majority of us in the long run if the advice is given out in a way that doesnt offend the less experienced of us.

Now of course there is the other side to this in that some players will constantly think that just because a player has only just recently joined that their opinion/skill doesnt matter as much as theirs. Is this morally correct? No of course not. Is it mathematically correct to say that a player playing for 3 years has more experience/skill than a player playing for 3 months? 95% of the time i'ld say yes.

At the end of the day when we all joined the game for the first time there was always different groups of people and its up to the new players to decide which group they think they'ld fit best into.
Are they a roleplayer? Do they like interacting with others in atlas? Prefer non stop tfs/farms? Just random PuGs? Teaming with veterans or new players? There are so many different player definitions in this game that at some point or another one group WILL clash with another.

"Oh this group is spoiling my groups fun because of so and so"

Now i do agree with your post in saying that people should be more carefull in the way they hand out advice and not to sound so elitist (i know iv sounded very big headed now and then) but can also see the reasons FOR being like it. After all the players who have put time/effort into perfecting their skills fully deserve to have a BIT of an ego, just in a moderation

Unfortunately, I think you'll find elitism in most online games - some people just seem to get off on chest-beating demonstrations of "uberness" in front of the new folks in town.

If your friend sticks at it (and gets past the "willy-wavers" in the early areas like Atlas Park) the friendliness should improve a bit (just be careful later on when crossing the farmer's land in Peregrine Island )

I agree that "holier-than-thou" attitudes in-game are irritating.

I had this happen when I first started my second account. Suddenly, I wasn't taken seriously in PUG's because of no vet badges :P

Conversely, the reverse is just as annoying.

When someone who has been playing the game a month or two starts dictating mission strategies and won't listen to polite constructive criticism, then that's highly irritating too.

i.e "We need to all run in and start hitting Ghostwidow in a big group and overwhelm her"

I think the worst form of elitism is if your team fails a TF, for whatever reason, and one player blames another, singularly, for the failure. Having been the target of such an attack myself (as the healer), it's hard not to feel a little wounded.

For that reason, im generally quick to avoid teaming with players who consider themselves above reproach.

sadly i have to agree with the OP that this is sadly the case, ive come across this attiude myself a few times just cos im a noob who has only been with the game since august 2008, thankfully in my case my boyf has himself been playing this game for 3 years so he was able and willing to help me out alot without me being told im an idiot just cos theres something i dont know & he was able to introduce me to a SG that were all friendly to me and could help me if he wasnt available, which they do, so while im here id like to say a big ty to 47 Ties for being gr8 sadly its the "elitist" attitude some peeps have that will put off newcomers who dont already have friends, partners or whatever to help them out from continuing with the game and then its normally these very people who moan bout low population, Imo if it bothers them that much then they have two choices, A. go to the US servers wheres theres a bigger population, or B. try and be a bit more considerate of noobs who are still learning the game, after all, THEY were noobs once!

p.s just want to add that i know not all people who have been playing this game for a number of years are like this, tho there are a fair number of "elitists" out there i have met just as many long standing vetrans who are great and helpful

There is a line between being an experienced player and being an experienced goit. I always make a point of being patient with people, cos everyone starts off new somewhere. Some people pick up a game fast, others take a while to get to grips.

There is, of course, no helping some people. Having explained a point such as Anchoring to a team, then have them repeatedly kill the anchor..-facepalm-
But yeah, it happens unfortunately. The best advice is to ignore them and try and enjoy them game =]

Elitism makes me a better person. Normally I wouldn't bother helping people, but my incredible need to display my awesome knowledge forces me to help people.

Of course it's their fault if my advice keeps killing them, they're obviously doing it wrong.
