Why do the Carnival girls die holding their heads?

Why do the girls of the Carnival (I don't think the bottles do it though) die holding their heads?

Is there some significance to it?

Probably to signify they're about to steal your endurance.

How much Carnie story have you done?

Perhaps it's enough to say that the post-death special attack that drains your endurance is called "Psychic Visage"

Yes, their masks are actually psychically "possessed" in part by their leader.

When you defeat them, that spirit is released.

That, I believe is the explanation, not 100% sure.

Maybe something for the Canon Fodder thread?

If you watch carefully, when they are defeated, you can see their souls departing. I believe this is Vanessa DeVore eating their souls. The punishment for failure.

Which isn't entirely consistent with a lot of the missions where you have to shake them down for information, if they die when you beat them. Though of course canon is never inconsistent...

It's more likely to be Vanessa pulling back the fragment of power in the mask, slurping up some of your endurance in the process.

I always thought it was 1 of 2 things. Either that....

1 The Carnies are all possessed. When defeated the possessed soul leaves the body along with all the power that the mask gives

Or...

2. It's the control that Vanessa has directly over the Carnie itself that is fleeing the bodfy upon defeat. Either way I always kinda figured that the Carnie that you fight really have little control of what's being done to them.

Me too. I do think it's weird that it starts out scary, but then shifts into something cool looking.

Because if they were holding other parts of their anatomy the lewd comments would wreck the Teen rating.

"Bottle" ones?

Probably the Illusionists.

My Carnie-lore-fu is weak. Is there anyone in-game that is a reformed Carnie?

Being a Carnie doesn't work that way. Although not a hive mind, all Carnies are somehow tied psychically to Vanessa DeVore. She'd notice any decent in the ranks and remove it from their minds.

You learn a lot about the Carnies on Madeleine Casey's arc

Paragon Wiki Article on her missions, yes there are spoilers

Thanks. So it looks like the answer is yes, a Carnie can be reformed if the psychic link between the Carnie's soul and the head Madame can be severed. There's a magical ritual that would need to be performed; it would be more than just taking off the mask.

Yes, no, maybe so?

[Spolier. : as I recall, you learn that vanessa knly has her power due to allowing herself to be reposses by her own mask during the rikti war so she could use it's power to feed off fallen heroes to strngtjen her own group of followers. She has always been one of the sad stories of the rikti war to me.]
