Thanks. So it looks like the answer is yes, a Carnie can be reformed if the psychic link between the Carnie's soul and the head Madame can be severed. There's a magical ritual that would need to be performed; it would be more than just taking off the mask.

Yes, no, maybe so?

And in addition, there is Praetorian Earth's Carnival of Light. They're freedom fighters against the Praetorians. I used that backstory as a foundation element in my Carnival of Light SG (Triumph...and spread to at least two more servers). I suspect in that case the masks serve as more of a benign psychic (and probably empathic) link. That's how we RP it, anyway. =)

Was on a MA farm recently [shhhh! Don't tell!] where someone had Vanessa in the mission as a pet. Repeatedly.

For at least five minutes, I let the rest of the team go on without me while I took closeup screenies from every conceivable angle.... well almost.

The masks worn by upper-level female Carnies are seriously beautiful close to.

What a great image. The art in this game, particularly some of the characters, is underrated I think.

Of all the people to meet in here... Greetings, Ring Mistress.

The Pinnacle branch of the Carnival of Light has a few members that are reformed Carnival of Shadows. Of course, canon for our SG is hardly as weighty as official canon, but official canon does seem to endorse the idea that it is possible.

Anyone else think that the carnies are hawt? Especially when they do that scream thing?

This alone makes all the hassle of fighting them worth it.

Altho', yes, it's disturbing that their souls are being consumed. Makes me want to kick V deV's Venice-garbed patootie.

Riddle. Me. THIS.

If the blue spirit visage from the minions is Vanessa stealing their soul... what is the blue visage when you defeat HER? Or does she do that?

Ahem.... Don't believe them...

The REAL reasons the Carnies die holding their heads...

1) Because grabbing their privates would violate the Teen Rating.

2) They're not. They're putting their whole head in.. taking their whole head out.. putting their whole head in.. then shake it all about... they just die before they get to the Hokey Pokey part.

3) They used to grab their crotch and scream but Michael Jackson sued for copyright infringement.

4) They're actually holding on their masks to make sure they don't fall off when they die. They're all adolescent's and wear the mask to cover the acne.

5) Hello... bright silk costumes... white porcelain masks... boy-toys with whip marks all over them... Exactly what about "Heavy Duty Drama Queen" do you NOT understand?

6) They all just realized they coulda had a V-8.

7) They're about to go to the Zig; they want to check their hair to look nice for their new cell mate.

8) If you had a huge spirit creature bursting out of the top of your skull you'd grab your head too!

9) They had a big Carnie pool bet going about who would be the last one alive. They're just upset because they didn't win.

10) They all just really loved that kid in the Home Alone movies.

[/ QUOTE ]well, lets see, slender shapely women in low cut outfits that push their "assets" pretty much to their chins..nah, just not seeing it :P anyhow, hey they are one of the more "pretty" groups in the game, the shriek can be somewhat tiring when you play a scrapper though, nothing like flying into a group of carnies, slam some attacks and having your eardrums blown out by 12 slightly staggered shrieks. ghyaa. but other than that, i like the tragic story of madeline sacrificing herself for the sake of the greater good, and being made into a monster because of it, plus i love bright colors, and my lord does a group of them look cool. plus, with rian's backstory, i always like a magic themed group.

SPOILER

Well, Vanessa herself IS possessed.

Wait.. Go Go Gadget Wiki![ QUOTE ]

Witness to the horror and devastation of the Rikti, and the fall of so many heroes, Vanessa felt she had no choice but to don the mask. Vanessa had an offer ready for Giovanna’s spirit – work together and share their resources or else both would die. United in purpose, Vanessa/Giovanna did her part against the Rikti. Although she could not mentally dominate the aliens directly, she created an army of perfectly-coordinated, fearless soldiers under her mental halo. She fought until near collapse, and then in a moment of desperation “pulled” too hard on a subject’s soul … and consumed it in a flash of hunger. Although horrified by what she had done, the rush exhilarated her and recharged her. As long as she had souls to sustain her, she could fight indefinitely. Vanessa/Giovanna devoted her forces to the Alpha Strike team. When the Rikti portal was destroyed, all of her puppets were killed. Cut off from her resources, she collapsed.

When Vanessa awoke, free of the mask, she longed for Giovanna like a lost love. Vanessa reclaimed the mask immediately. United now in shared history and close friendship, Giovanna convinced Vanessa that she needed a reward for her good service. Giovanna helped Vanessa build her own little version of Paradise by seducing and dominating the young and wealthy of Paragon City. She reveled in the luxury, but soon felt directionless.

My Carnie-lore-fu is weak. Is there anyone in-game that is a reformed Carnie?
[ QUOTE ]

Being a Carnie doesn't work that way. Although not a hive mind, all Carnies are somehow tied psychically to Vanessa DeVore. She'd notice any decent in the ranks and remove it from their minds.

[/ QUOTE ]

[/ QUOTE ]

She doesn't have quite that degree of control, at least not consistently. There's at least one carnie in a Harvey Maylor mission who manages to get away from her, although it is not a pleasant experience and we don't find out what happens after: wiki link. Note that she can't pinpoint the traitor precisely.

[/ QUOTE ]

[/ QUOTE ]

It is, apparently, Vanessa's psyche.

Vanessa was possessed. She is now very much in control, to the point where it would be more accurate to say Giovanna is imprisoned in her head. More to the point, by the time you fight Vanessa you have already gone inside her head and eliminated Giovanna.

Because of the 'hook' Vanessa has via the masks, it is tricky to roleplay a reformed Carnie, if one sticks to canon.

So far my end runs around the problem have been:

* Mask shot off and shattered - Cosmic Seneschal (Carnie outfit, plate covering bullet scar)

* Mask forcibly removed via magic (resulting in amnesia) - Electric Seneschal (carnie outfit, elec/elec blaster)

* Character is mindblind, and kicked out of Carnival because of it (Bitter December, ice/cold dominator).

This is why I've always maintained that there should not be a Carnies based mastermind set (back when there was much talk of making one), unless it's a separate epic AT.

The Carnies get their power from DeVore. If some started striking out on their own, DeVore would either pull their power away or brain wash them into coming back. So a normal MM Carnie set wouldn't work, but a Carnies epic could have an underlying story where the player is doing something for Ms. Devore.

Carnies are a nicely visual presence in the game. I really wanted to see some in a Rikti underground map because I thought they'd mesh so well with the design and colors of those places. I ended up doing that, sort of, in my second arc. At best they're just a side note in it now, but I was right, they do look nice in there. If we had ten arc slots to fill I'd have to cobble one up that was nothing but Carnies on those maps...

Why do the girls of the Carnival (I don't think the bottles do it though) die holding their heads?

[/ QUOTE ]

Because if they died holding their boobs or butt, it might change our ESRB rating. Of course there would STILL be plenty of perfectly grown up kids playing anyway

Posted

oh hay guys let's run this into the ground, anyone made a joke about the carnies groping themselves and ruining the game's rating yet

Posted

If they didn't wear clothes they would need to fix the ERSB ratings because they'd be groping their junk!

Carnies are one of the more seriously creepy groups in the game. Forget the women, has anyone taken a good look at the men? Each has his entire back covered with whip marks. Vanessa must get her jollies in some decidedly non-teen rated ways.

I love the Carnival of Shadows. And if I might beg BAB or whoever makes maps in the game, please please PLEASE create a Venice-style cathedral-ish map for a flashback Ouro mish to fight the original Giovanna Scaldi.

Personally I will WALK to Mountain View and bow down before the devs if they make Carnie costume pieces unlockable - the masks, the dresses, and the weapons would rock. Even the outfits the Seneschals wear would be fantastic.

(For example, instead of Fire Sword, gimme that torch and let me swing that sucker around!)
