Quote:You recall correctly, sir.IIRC that box also has a boatload of fans and a TEC to cool the CPU? Then I can understand the wattage requirement.
(the pic in my sig)
Yep, 9 fans and the TEC. The thermo electric cooler alone uses somewhere around 90w.
Actually went with the Black Widow (I'm sorry, do PSU's really need such silly names?) that Midnight_Mime suggested, or at least a version there of.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817153106
850w, 69a on the 12v, single rail, modular, Bronze cert, and free 3 day shipping.
$110.99 total.
At that price, figured I might as well go overpowered...and I wasn't needing future proofing, but might as well get something that I'd be able to use in any PC I build in the future...when I win the lotto and can afford to, that is. -
ATX12v = These PSU's have a 20+4pin (or just a 24pin) main mobo connector and a 4pin 12v connector that ussually connects to the mobo close to the CPU socket.
EPS12v = These PSU's have a 20+4pin (or just a 24pin) main mobo connector and an 8pin connector (placement same as above). Mostly a server spec PSU. Supposedly they are backwards compatable...but not really, since the true ones come with the 8pin being one piece, not speratable into 2x4pin connections, so they don't actually fit the mobo because somethings ussually in the way...hence the "ATX12v/EPS12v".
"ATX12v/EPS12v" = Many PSU's come like this now so they're compatable with a wider range.
These have:
-20+4
-8pin (that seperates into 2x4pin)
OR
-20+4pin
-8pin
-4pin
*those are all mobo connections. The other cables from the PSU are the same: SATA, molex, peripheral (sp?), PCI-e (those differ sometimes between 6pin, 6+2pin, 8pin, though).
....or something like that...I think...*please* correct me if I'm wrong...best I can remember off the top of my head.
...I guess even mentioning it to begin with is'nt really needed...not sure what *doesn't* use on or the other of these two standars anymore (except maybe some proprietary [sp?] Dell mobos maybe)...but I'm slightly out of touch with the most recent standards going around.
...that was a little more longwinded than I intended, sorry. -
Quote:The quad core in my sig has one.Tigerdirect.com, do a guided search for a power supply between 700-800 watts for less than $100. I found 22 power supplies, many of which fit your criteria. Further, the very first power supply listed, a Thermaltake XT, meets all your criteria.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817153127
Quote:Personally I wouldn't touch a sub $100 PSU that claims to have 7-800w with a ten foot insulated pole. I know it sounds dull but a good PSU is one of the most important things to consider in a new PC build. It's pretty much the workhorse of your PC and it not only has to be of superior build quality, it needs to be efficient and it has to have lots of amperage on the rails to power all of your hungry hardware. The last thing you want is a faulty PSU to blow up on you and take out 3 or 4 other expensive components with it.
The good thing about a high quality PSU is that you can go "low" with the watt rating and still be totally fine.
I think this is exactly what you're looking for.Great unit.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...air%20hx%20650
$120
...but monies tight...so thought I might see if anyone had any experience with particular one or has dealt with some "great up and coming company, that has done wonders for PSU's and pricing", heh (nothing wrong with helping a new company enter the world...but not at the cost of my PC's).
It's nice to see that both of you pulled up two PSU's that I have considered. Bronze (and gold or silver) cert can bring a lower wattage/amperage unit into consideration...I tend to forget that.
Guess I'll eat the extra $20 and just grab another of the Thermaltake XT's.
Thanks. -
I'm in need of a new power supply for the Dual core PC in my sig.
Shopping around on my own, but I thought I'd throw the question out here.
Anyone have any favorites for PSU's?
Requirments:
-730-800w
-modular cabling
-2 PCI-e connections (6 pin graphics card connectors...6+2's are not currently needed and not really looking for an upgrade path)
-20+4 main mobo
-ATX12v (or ATX12v/EPS12v)
-Under $120...prefferably under $100 (that's seeming to be the hard part)
...can't think of anything else off the top of my head. Forget anything?
Just curious...maybe someone will suggest a diamond that I've overlooked. -
Not really a dead dog/horse/cow beating give-it-up-already-you've-lost-but-have-still-asked-everytime-there-is-a-feature-update-or-patch-note question asking if this patch fixes PvP.

Oooo, Plant/Poisen troller!
Wish we'd had that when I made Angry Garden...much better fit than Rad (even though Rad is awesome).
Good deal! -
Quote:...but the 1100T has an unlocked multi.Better off with an i3-2100 than any AMD processor right now, at least for gaming. No AMD processor at this moment is worth it for gaming.
Apples to apples, the 1100t wins over the i3-2100 *today, upgrade path or no.
Seen that 1100tBlack get upwards of 4.4GHz on air.
*not any day, mind you, but today. -
Quote:*starts counting fingers...*I had to laugh when I realized I had seven fans going in this box. Four from the case, one on the vid card, one on the PSU, and one on the CPU. I dunno what the optimal temp ranges are, but overclocked to 3.7ghz w/that 1000w PSU in there and it hovers around 100F. It was, 120F standing in RWZ tonight with graphics settings pretty high. Doesn't seem like it's going to overheat, but I kinda wish there weren't so many cables from that PSU, since they take up a lotta space.
...huh, 10 fans in my case in my main Mid-Special system...Beat'cha!
There's one thing I always forget when doing an OC...it's to factor in what the temperature is now, and what it's going to be in the middle of summer (which it's starting to *actually* look like here in California).
Just sayin' 'cause I had recently been reminded of that fact when...kaboom!
Edit to add: Modular cabling...the best thing to happen to PSU's ever! -

One of the best hearding tanks I've ever met here in Co* used a gamepad/numpad combo.
Taught me everything I know about being a herding tank...which I, of course, apply on a keyboard instead. -
Quote:Woof, I'm getting the brain fuzzies again. Just noticed, that it actually wasn't a stock cooler to begin with...it was CoolerMaster one (model unknown...and which I actually broke...or really it just kinda crumbled in my hands). Now I'm curious about what stock HSF's were like...been so long.Well if the motherboard in hand has the plastic support structure around it, the photo from the HP site doesn't show one, then I think it should work.
They're like bunny rabbits. My room is definitily a breeding ground for PC's...just put one together for my brother last month.
Work too...havn't actually bought a *new* PC for anyone there in years. -
Quote:I looked and looked, just because I was curious, for that p85 too...haven't the slightest idea either, even after an hour or so searching...The Asus is a TNT2 card. No idea what a VisionTek p85 has as a GPU. I'll say you're right about the FX5600
Quote:No idea about the heatsink. Never built a P4 system because I loathed the whole P4 CPU family so I don't have a clue what the normal heatsink retention mechanism for a Socket 478 is like.
ANyway, it fit fine...with a little modding to the little HP airduct hood of the case...fun with wire snipes and plyers.
Quote:You remind me of a friend who has a closet full of old computer stuff and every so often he builds a system for a friend or relative from the pile of parts....so I decided rather than just replace the hard drive, I'd replace almost everything 'cept the mobo, case and PSU. Started as an HP Pavilian 7955
. It's still quite an upgrade...especially since I scrounged around and found and old P4 2.4GHz 400MHz in a similiar HP I had at work.
...mine is more like a garage than a closet.
Nice little goof off thread.
EDIT: Woof, forgot I have to go look for a driver for that 5600...urg. -
Oh, and anyone think I'm gunna run into any problems putting this (http://www.bjorn3d.com/read.php?cID=386) on that mobo (with the original 1.5GHz proc, since you all KEELED my idea idea about setting the 2.53 in there
)?
Gunna put one fan on it, probably facing the back, pulling through the HSF and pushing out the back.
(Again, I know these are silly questions, just thought it'd be fun to work on some old(er) stuff...clean up some of the carp I've got laying around here...I was amazed at how much SDRAM I've got laying around)
-
Ok, well that clears that up.
Next question:
Vid Cards, which one is...err, was better out of these 3?
-VisionTek p85
-ASUS AGP-V3800M
-GFX5600
I believe the 5600, right? IIRC.
(...I'm not really sure why I'm building anything with all this carp...I just know I'm having fun doing it...I has a proooject!
)

Quote:First thought? You play outside the box, you play inside the box(es).Healix, running in Windowed mode may be a fix in and of itself, but I despise windowed mode. I alt-tab between two full screen instances.
ANY changes to your vid settings, Bill? Any at all inside or outside of game? We both know they can sneak up on yah sometimes.
(Wow, first time I've poked my head in this area for a long time)

Off COH topic question...
http://www.elhvb.com/mboards/OEM/HP/...zon_manual.pdf
(Asus P4B-LA mobo, made for HP machines...currently has a 1.5P4 CPU in it)
Will a 2.53p4 533MHz 478pin (SL6EG Northwood) work in it?
I'd love to say yes, but this stuff is old and I've got the brain-fuzzies, so 2nd set of eyes is nice. -
Quote:What, the guy said it fell off a truck...who am I to argue? Yeah, sure, it *might* have "fell" when he picked up the truck and threw it across the highway...but it still technically "fell off".This just in: The OC Queen approves of stolen/ill-gotten goods. Film at 11.

Bought something for 145mil that I intended to buy for 14.5 myself today, not to bad, but I've done way worse (think I did 500mil once or twice).
Had 14,500,000 in the box, went to highlight and change the 4 to a 5. Ended up highlighting the comma accidentally and added a 5 instead of typing over the intended 4....sooo, bought a 'Perf Shift:Chance for end' for 145,000,000. Smarted, but now I know one can highlight the commas. -
Something else. Had the greyed out buttons, restarted the client, fine, could post stuff again.
Ok, so went on posting and buying. Bougt a few things, claimed them, see the message in the market notification channel saying I got it, but hasn't showin' up my in enhancment tray. DOesn't show up in stored, bought, anywhere in the gui.
About to restart clilent again to see if it'll clear up this too.
Edit: Heh, restarted, still no enhancment under tab or in my tray, market still kept the money.
Edit#2: Ha! Bid that I bought it with shows up in hstory. 1550000 for an Efficacy Adapt: endmod/acc. Market is still odd.
Edit#3: Nope, still broken. Just paid 5005000 for the same thing (guess I'm too stupid to test with a lower costing item, hehe). History shows my payment. On sale went from 2 to 1. Money went bye bye. Chat says I got it. Bought tab is empty. Tray is empty.
Edit#4!!!!: Bought a salvage, came throough fine...yeesh...still no Efficacy Adaptors.
Edit#5: They came through at the same time I grabbed the salvage! Super market lag maybe? Don't care, happy to get them and that it's not neccisarily a bug. -

I'm not trying to bug Castle about this, but I really dislike that this (and 'non-trivial' too) became a popular term...it just sounds so silly...why can't we just say 'hard', 'difficult', or even just 'significant amount'? Or what's wrong with 'time/resource costly' even, if we still want to sound hoity-toity?
I speak not about just this, but it's proliferated into many fields (mine and the devs especially)...ugh.
...sorry Castle/everyone, didn't mean to pester.
