Random CPU compatibility question

Off COH topic question...

http://www.elhvb.com/mboards/OEM/HP/...zon_manual.pdf
(Asus P4B-LA mobo, made for HP machines...currently has a 1.5P4 CPU in it)

Will a 2.53p4 533MHz 478pin (SL6EG Northwood) work in it?

I'd love to say yes, but this stuff is old and I've got the brain-fuzzies, so 2nd set of eyes is nice.

Nope.

http://www.intel.com/cd/channel/rese...ucts/35837.htm

Of the two Asus P4B motherboards listed by Intel, the P4B-MX and P4B266-C support no processors over 2.4ghz. Intel also lists the P4PE, which also stops at 2.4ghz processor support.

None of the Intel 845 chipset boards are recorded to support processors in excess of 2.4ghz. Looking through documentation the 845 chipset, the .13micron 2.4ghz Pentium4 was as far as the chipset went on support.

I'm going to say probably no due to a BIOS limitation in recognizing such a "new" processor (manual from August 2001, 533MHz FSB P4s came out about six months later). So the FSB speed might be fixed at 400MHz making the CPU run only at 1.9GHz. The next question is if the voltage regulator on the MB can be set to a lower voltage since the Northwood ran a 1.4-1.5 volts while the older P4s ran at 1.75 volts.

If you have an idea which HP model carried this MB then maybe you can see if 1) there is a BIOS upgrade that may include the early Northwoods and 2) there's a list of potential CPUs that were compatible. This doesn't say a whole lot.

Also don't forget, and I'm sure you realize this, single channel SDRAM memory. Just what Pentium 4s like, really limited memory bandwidth. In real world terms this limited bandwidth may erode a significant chunk of expected performance gains even if you get this running at it's 2.53GHz because it will be always waiting on memory fetches.

The downside of simply sticking it in and giving it a try is how well the Northwood can handle Willamette voltages, worse case fry the chip.

Ok, well that clears that up.

Next question:
Vid Cards, which one is...err, was better out of these 3?
-VisionTek p85
-ASUS AGP-V3800M
-GFX5600

I believe the 5600, right? IIRC.

(...I'm not really sure why I'm building anything with all this carp...I just know I'm having fun doing it...I has a proooject!)

Oh, and anyone think I'm gunna run into any problems putting this (http://www.bjorn3d.com/read.php?cID=386) on that mobo (with the original 1.5GHz proc, since you all KEELED my idea idea about setting the 2.53 in there)?

Gunna put one fan on it, probably facing the back, pulling through the HSF and pushing out the back.

(Again, I know these are silly questions, just thought it'd be fun to work on some old(er) stuff...clean up some of the carp I've got laying around here...I was amazed at how much SDRAM I've got laying around)

The Asus is a TNT2 card. No idea what a VisionTek p85 has as a GPU. I'll say you're right about the FX5600

No idea about the heatsink. Never built a P4 system because I loathed the whole P4 CPU family so I don't have a clue what the normal heatsink retention mechanism for a Socket 478 is like.

You remind me of a friend who has a closet full of old computer stuff and every so often he builds a system for a friend or relative from the pile of parts.

I looked and looked, just because I was curious, for that p85 too...haven't the slightest idea either, even after an hour or so searching...

Almost exactly like the Core2's but square(...er?), IIRC...been awhile since I used a stock cooler for one of them.
ANyway, it fit fine...with a little modding to the little HP airduct hood of the case...fun with wire snipes and plyers.

Well, my ladyfriend's hard drive went *whirrrr-click-click-click-scruuuunch---weeeeeeeeeee!!!*...so I decided rather than just replace the hard drive, I'd replace almost everything 'cept the mobo, case and PSU. Started as an HP Pavilian 7955. It's still quite an upgrade...especially since I scrounged around and found and old P4 2.4GHz 400MHz in a similiar HP I had at work.

...mine is more like a garage than a closet.

Nice little goof off thread.

EDIT: Woof, forgot I have to go look for a driver for that 5600...urg.

Well if the motherboard in hand has the plastic support structure around it, the photo from the HP site doesn't show one, then I think it should work.

We use to goof on my friend and joke how systems are being spontaneously created.

"So bred any new computers lately?"

Now he has his own house so yea, his closet is now much, much bigger.

Woof, I'm getting the brain fuzzies again. Just noticed, that it actually wasn't a stock cooler to begin with...it was CoolerMaster one (model unknown...and which I actually broke...or really it just kinda crumbled in my hands). Now I'm curious about what stock HSF's were like...been so long.

They're like bunny rabbits. My room is definitily a breeding ground for PC's...just put one together for my brother last month.

Work too...havn't actually bought a *new* PC for anyone there in years.
