Dual boxing I-17 issue
i've been having sort of the same issue since I built my new rig. I was able to dual box with my Q6600 quad, 8gb ram, Geforce 275 but now with my new I7 930, 6gb and ATI 5770 I can't seem to even get more than 5fps.
I haven't tried swapping the cards yet, but I can't see why the ATI wouldn't be able to support the dual box, especially since I normally use the /maxinactivefps command.
Well crud. Nothin?
Ok, if I figure it out I'll be sure to report the fix.

i'll try tonight with the new drivers and see if I still get the same problem.
How nuts is this..here I am with an old HP desktop, WinXP, AGP video card and have no probs with double-boxing. When I put one toon on follow, it happens in real time on both parts of my screen. I only have one monitor, and give each instance half a screen, side by side...I just mouse back and forth.) I don't understand how an older puter/card can have so little probs with the game.

wierd aint it. My cpu is no top of the line unit or no uber gaming machine but I can run COX twice, search net, watch movie, and play freecell all at once and not a prob. I rarely get lag unless it's them team wide blips that come and goes every blue moon. Then I testd out a new machine and holy blazes barely could run one set of COH by itself. I'm keeping my old box till it kicks then I'ma builda replica without windows vista or the likes or course.

Healix, running in Windowed mode may be a fix in and of itself, but I despise windowed mode. I alt-tab between two full screen instances.

ANY changes to your vid settings, Bill? Any at all inside or outside of game? We both know they can sneak up on yah sometimes.

(Wow, first time I've poked my head in this area for a long time

Neg, Mid, no changes from pre-i-17 to post-i-17. However, I haven't retested this since I installed the 10.7s and after THAT occurred I've made some tweaks.
Real life has suddenly taken an extremely busy turn toward the psychotic, so hopefully I'll be able to catch a breath this weekend and muck about on it.

I was able to dual box yesterday after installing the 10.7. However, I also took time to adjust some settings to see if they would help so I'm not sure if it was just the delay Bill mentioned that allowed me to play or my settings change.
Edit: I just tried again with no problem. I even put all the settings back to max and was still getting 30 fps on both screen.

Looks like the 10.7s might have cleared it all up. I have a 2 second burst of low FPS the first time I zone, but then alt-tabbing between full screens works like a champ. No dumbing down of settings needed.
Thanks, folks.

is there a thread with good instructions on duel boxing?

Dunno, MH, but here's my guide:
Start CHV, log in, go back to desktop, start CHV, log in second account, play. Alt tab as necessary.

Alternately, I set up another shortcut to help:
"...\City of Heroes\CityOfHeroes.exe" -project coh -maxinactivefps 5
That will skip the updater process and make logging into the second account a little faster. The fps command at the end is designed to keep the inactive window running slower to free up resources to help your active window run more smoothly. As long as you have enough RAM to hold two (or more) instances of the game, you should be fine.
Note:
Even though the shortcut above skips the updater and allows multiple clients to be loaded simultaneously, loading more than one client at once can get buggy sometimes. I've had mixed results with this. It doesn't seem to be consistent. Every once in a while, one of the clients gets really bad performance (even delayed response at the login screen) and needs to be reloaded. For that reason, I second the suggestion above to let one client fully load before opening the next, regardless if you skip the updater or not. That seems to ensure each one is loaded properly. YMMV
I add the maxinactivefps command to all my shortcuts regardless if I'm planning to dual-instance or not. You never know when you'll want to log in another character for something. If you don't add it to your main shortcut, you can use "/maxinactivefps 5" in-game as well. For best results, you must run the command on each and every client instance being run. It's not necessary to run the command again after relogging.
I log into the game (I use windowed mode) and then adjust it to take up half my screen. Then start the second instance, then adjust that to take up the other half. No alt tabbing...I can see both at the same time. Mousing back and forth is fast.

Hey yall,
Before I-17 hit, I could fire up two clients full screen at full settings and alt-tab between the two without issue.
After i-17, however, I can still do so, but there's a massive FPS drop that lasts around 15-20 seconds, maybe more, each time I bounce between the two instances. Now once I let it sit for that time period, I'm then back up to normal performance levels and can cruise along.
On rare occasions I can bounce between the two without issue when each character is on the same map.
Sometimes when the two are in different zones, the problem takes much longer to go away.
Win7 64bit
10.6 ATIs
5870 vid card
6GB RAM
I have attempted to use the maxinactivefps flag but it does nothing to help.
Thoughts?
EDIT: Video card now accurate.
