City of Heroes Going Rogue - FAQ - Discussion
One interesting thing with the alternative timeline they might do is to remove both world wars - Tyrant would already have taken over the world before they started - that'd mean that although Praetoria would be ruled by a dictator, they wouldn't have experienced the suffering and loss of life that our world did, so he could point out that a world wide superpowered dictatorship was actually more peaceful than our world and the heroes who are supposed to protect it.
I think it'd make for a cool "temptaion" storyline for heroes on their way to becoming villains, by showing them that Tyrant's methods were the "best" solution to problems like war - in fact, he could even use that to recruit fallen heroes to help his planned invasion - once they were convinced of his argument, it'd make sense for them to help him take over our world and bring "peace", just like he did in Praetoria.

I thought in the main timeline, Cole was looking for the Well of Furies to find a cure for his friend Richter, who had been grievously injured in a mustard gas attack during World War One. (The wiki article mentions the Great War, which as far as I know is another name for WWI.) So WWI would already have been over, unless they're changing the timeline completely. And World War 2 could very well have been the result of Tyrant trying to seize control - rather than Hitler running around attacking everyone, it would have been America under the command of Emperor Cole. (In which case, the US was clearly still on the winning side.) If they go that route, the Praetorian version of the 5th column could very well be resistance fighters. (Just because they've said that they're moving away from the mirror world idea doesn't mean that some groups might *not* be flipped, either.)
It was Marcus Cole who was exposed to mustard gas, not Stephan Richter!
Prometheus: ... so what I told you was true, from a certain point of view.
Me: From a certain point of view?
Prometheus: You're going to find that many of the truths we cling to depend greatly on your point of view.
Me: You're right about that. Power Blast is very pretty from a certain point of view. But that point of view is not head-on. <Kaboom> - Arcanaville.
I was refering to the main "Prime world" timeline. I have no idea if either of the Praetorian versions of Cole or Richter were exposed to mustard gas. I was just pointing out that I'm pretty sure WWI was over by the time Statesman became a super.

Oh!...I thought you were refering to this timeline. I'm sure it was the same scenario, but with a different outcome.

I'm pretty sure Richter is dead in the Preatorian universe. I mean, think about it. You drink from the Well of the Furies and gain incredible powers which allow you to take over the world. Wouldn't you kill the only other person who had also had a drink from the Well? At least on Prime Earth, it seems like Recluse's powers were slow to develop, whereas Statesman got all his powers right off the bat.
I wonder what point the Praetorian timeline splits off from our one? Like what's the event that starts to move Marcus Cole towards evil?

It's kinda sad that there aren't any news updates regaring CoX like there used to be (I can't tell if it's just the lack of news or just that the new forums just suck, and you cant find anything in it.)
Anyways I found this....for anyone who hasn't read it yet, since I haven't seen it referenced on the forums.

note to marketing/pr/devs.....any news about the future of the game would be much appreciated...a tidbit here or there, a riddle we need to solve, teaser, one-liner....anything...i'm dying here.

This is why we didn't know Power Customization was coming until July, despite the fact that they had been working on it since May of 2008. Even then, we complain incessantly about how EATs and Power Pools were left out of the Customization, regardless of the fact that we were told in the initial announcement which powersets were getting customized, and the first Q&A about it told us that Power Pools and APP/PPP are next to be worked on.
Add into this already guarded mindset that City of Heroes now has competition. They now need to play their cards even closer to the vest so that the competition can't rush out some comparable feature just to claim they had it first.
My guess is that we might see some trickle of information in the next two weeks, and expect a major bomb to drop at HeroCon.
New story arcs coming soon (ARC IDs will be aded when I finish the arc):
So, you want to join the Hellions? (level 1-14 Villainous arc)
Sparks & Steel (level 5-20 Heroic arc)
and
So you want to join the Skulls? (level 1-14 Villainous arc)
I'm expecting more news around the start of October, and then more at Hero Con.

This was one of the front page news items in September. You can probably still find it.
I, and I think many others, are as starved for info as you are. However, the forum community as a whole has proven unable to handle new information too far out. If the Devs announce something too far out, and it doesn't materialize exactly the way they initially promoted, or on schedule, or at all, we take them to task for it, and never let them forget it. We create these wild conspiracy theories about bait & switch or how the Devs are purposely trying to kill the game. As a group, it is almost impossible for us to keep a level head about, well, anything. Well said

well my theory on where the two timelines split is probably the fact that Stefan Richter dies in the mustard gas attack, and when Marcus Cole found the well, the power "went to his head"

Also, don't forget that Lord Recluse actually took over the Rogue Islands and its army of arachnos from someone else who's name escapes me, lest we forget we have a time-traveling, dimension-crossing, wacko with more than enough insanity to interfere with everything, and dumb enough to ruin anything.

I agree with most of this post but you can't lump in the community as a whole. Most adults here would realize things change and don't cry bloody murder when things aren't delivered. However, some do and I have seen it on here. I can't blame the DEVS for keeping things quiet but it is a big deal and some info should be released. Looks like Hero Con will do that.
I also really doubt the DEVS are trying to ruin this game in any way. We may disagree with some moves but it is, in their eyes, for the betterment of the game. I can take that leap of faith. Lots of stuff they do frustrates me but you can't please all the people all the time.
Lastly, it seems GR will not be on sale for X-Mas. I think that is a huge mistake. That is the big shopping season. This should have been a priority. I find it very odd they have just missed the X-Mas season 2 years in a row (last year's MAC pack and, more than likely, GR this year). Anyway, maybe they will put it out by X-Mas...we just never know

"It's amazing how well you can put up with endurance issues if you hide them under a large enough pile of bodies."

So, I know this may have been asked, do we even have a tentative date for Going Rogue?

I've shipped software to retail for Christmas in the past and my experience is that you have to commit to the retailers 6-9 months ahead of time (they don't take kindly to "we'll probably have it by Christmas") and have a master ready no later than early October to allow time for mastering, box manufacturing, assembly and shipping to retail. I'm sure Marketing had a sit-down with Development around March and asked if they could make Christmas and were told it just wasn't feasible.
Freedom: Blazing Larb, Fiery Fulcrum, Sardan Reborn, Arctic-Frenzy, Wasabi Sam, Mr Smashtastic.
- for a period of thime, they didn't have the staff to do it (the days of the FREEM! 15)
- They couldnt come up with a way to do it that wasn't a tedious grind to the players
- they couldn't come up with a way for it to make sense plot wise

I'm sure their marketing people would have loved to have GR out by Christmas. It's not exactly rocket science to figure out that a product on the shelves for Christmas is preferable to a product on the shelves in the first quarter. The problem is you can't just pull a Picard and say "make it so."

Yeah I am anticipating the pre-order date. If anyone finds out any info on the pre-order release I would like to know when this is supposed to happen to plan accordingly.
And one thing about the package design, they can work on the box and collateral material while the programmers and developers are working on the game itself. They already have 3 Main characters to put on the package. They have released bios and media about 2 of the 3 already. It isnt hard to take some extra hi-res images for the package. Throw a twist on the current style of package layout and "voila!". Now that I mention it, that would be a fun little project for me to work on for funsies.
There are certainly a number of other things that need to be done after the expansion is finished, like printing and recording of the discs. But a lot of things can be done during the development process.
So yeah, if anyone gets a date on the pre-order, PM me with an official link please.

Yeah they ditched the "mirror universe" for Praetoria, it is now a divergent timeline. Praetoria Earth history is basically the same as ours, Primal Earth history. The difference occured when Cole and Richter opened up Pandora's Box in 1896. Instead of becoming Statesman and being good, Marcus Cole went bad and became Tyrant. Unknown what happened to Richter in Preatoria Earth at this point.
The devs said from that point, they rewrote the history till today. Has event X happened? Is so then this would have happened and so on.
This should be interesting. Really can't wait to have more news about Going Rogue.
