Discussion: NCsoft and Vivox Voice Chat
[ QUOTE ]
Nice for those who want it, I guess, but it's mostly just going to be an annoyance for me. I don't like voice chat, I especially don't want to use it when playing characters for whom my voice wouldn't be appropriate, and I don't want to have to put up with endless pressure to turn voice chat on when I just plain don't want it. Hopefully most players will choose to be polite about it and respect other players' decisions to abstain, but it feels like this could just turn into one more excuse for some people to be jerks.

What this person said.
I do not want. I will not use. I will avoid it if at all possible. If it is forced on me, it will likely be the end of my time with CoX.
I have my reasons for not liking to talk to people. I was going to spell some of them out here, but it doesn't really matter why I feel this way. I just do. So please, don't let this be forced on us.

Gonna be hard to play a tiny little goblin's piping cute voice, or a burly 9 foot tall, 400 pound tank's voice, or a catgirl's voice.. so many alts. Each with a distinctive voice, will this new software be able to voice change realistically for all these for RP purposes?
Love Vent for TF's and for playing with friends. Will use it for sure. I am really surprised at all the venom this one has brought out though. You'd think they were going to have DXP weekend EVERY weekend or something like that with a lot of the replies here. Oh well, to each their own I suppose.

This sums up this announcement for me. Sometimes it can be difficult to find a team, at least during the times I can play, but if a new requirement for teams is to have voice chat or get the boot, well, I guess it would be time to move on.
Of course, maybe it would be time for an SG for those folks that voice chat holds no appeal for. Maybe call ourselves Silent Justice.
Please dont use the money you so desperately need for actual ingame content and ingame stuff for this voice stuff.
I realllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllly hope this isnt what you are using our money for.
I have absolutely no desire to actually hear people cuss out every foe we come to, or go into graphic detail about their date last night.
ugh this sucks
You're such a rebel.
just 5 inf here, what would be ideal would be integrate the tech into CoX directly,
in addition to the existing text channels, add in a voice team channel as a suppliment, with the user able to enable/ disable it

i have heard so many abusive conversations through game voice chat its disgusting and a total waste of efforts imo.
when i first read the announcement i thought we were getting ingame voices like from the NPC's, which after hearing age of conan and how annoying that is I was like "ewwww".
but then i re-read it and oh joy they want me to hear the jerks actually saying "Lets Cyborrz"
no frikkin thanks, the money could have gone to something else imo.
*edit*
How many of us have to always keep it turned off for someone to think it was a bad investment?

But roleplaying is in essence suspension of belief in some cases anyway (Hard to imagine a baritone voice? Try having it acted out in front of you by a 6'5" Norseman Now that is suspension of belief!). My friend and I (who have the worst time finding RP groups who actually RP!) Have used voice chat to coordinate our actions OOC, and reserved typing to our In-Character interactions. We even have a pair of aliens That speak in Mad Gab-like english ("Thisis haou eta kingaim, knotso bahd winu git dountwo iht. Beezihdz, tha re'akshun frum thooz whusi iht ihz daon writ prysliss.") and have RP'd the voice chat as telepathy between the two of us.
Probably nothing to fear from this, since it will be like any other option and you can simply shut it off. People can see you have it shut off and gripe? Do they know you have a mic? Do you really care? would you want to continue playing a game with a person who gets bent over such things? I used to have a buddy that would get pissed and pester me if I did not answer my cell phone every time he called... Notice I said used to have a buddy.
All in all, I think this is may be nothing less than more of the same over-the-top improvements to a game that by all rights should be old news by now (Seriously, four years is like twice the lifespan of most games as it is. How many MMO's have come and gone in the last few years?) This new reinvestment into the franchise has been full of nothing shy of win. Every patch renews my interest, even if I have no use for the offerings. More is better, and new is revitalizing.
[/ QUOTE ]
I *think* that's what Voice Font is supposed to be, but I supposed it could be typing into a chat and it talks for you. I'm hoping that you can play with how your voice sounds. I sound like neither a female nor huge body type. :/
Still here, even after all this time!
I am disappointed by this announcement for the following reasons.
I don't want to hear other players, and I certainly don't want to be expected to talk to them. The thought of having to listen to my SG friends' Texas accents every time I team with them makes me cringe. Worse, I don't want every pick-up group I join to expect me to be listening to them whining, breathing, making crude jokes, etc. Additionally, I like being able to scream senselessly at the game/other players/the enemies/the weather/whatever. I have people looking over my shoulder all day at work; CoX time is my time to cut loose. Finally, I don't have a microphone and don't want to wear a headset when I play.
This is the first feature I've ever heard about that's not only filled me with apprehension but also made me wonder if I will continue playing. I'll have to wait and see what it's like when it's introduced, but for the moment, I'm more pessimistic than usual.
I'm happy for everyone who thinks this is a wonderful thing, though.

I will not be using this as I am significantly hearing impaired in Real Life. While this does not impair my enjoyment of the game, when this feature does get implemented, I fully expect to get berated by users asking why I don't use it and probably get insulted by them for not using it.
This feature is *not* a City of Heroes feature. It says right in the announcement.
It's an NC hub kind of thing. It's not being integrated into the game itself, it goes over NC games easily because it'd be installed by going through the NC portal for starting your games.
It's not a COH thing. It's just an optional thing NC will do.
I just do not want to HAVE to use an NC portal to open my game.

Voice chat is quickly becoming a requirement for any MMO. It is just far too convenient to just talk rather than typing everything out. It is just a fact of life we'll have to accept. The days of being able to type out instructions over ooc chat like we did when raiding Fear and Hate in Everquest are long gone. It is just nice to see PlayNC also capitalizing on integrated voice chat for their launcher.
[/ QUOTE ]
A requirement? You got to be kidding me! I have nothing against people who like using voice chat but i doubt it will ever become a "standard" for MMO.
Maybe you havent notice but more than half the planet doesnt speak english by the way. If i was to be forced to join a voice channel to play a game then that means that you would have to listen to my french all the time. Until there are universal translators, i doubt everyone would get along fine on "voice MMO".
Beside that, it wouldnt be much immersive when the sexy heroine fighting alongside you would reply to you using "voicechat" with a very manly male teenager voice
Just saying...
I may disagree with what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.

While voice is a great feature all together. Because it provides teams and sg's a better way to explain how to run a Task Force. I can this bringing even more stereotype into the game. As in "You dont have voice so you can't join my team". Or cause problems such as "Its not my fault you can't use sound I don't feel like typing"
Second concern is this costing us money?

This is an example of why this is a bad idea. My nephew is just starting to learn how to play this game (He's 8). He's completely deaf in both ears. I started him on the game because it would enable him to interact with others w/o his hearing being an issue. We all know voice only teams are gonna be running.
Anyone who's done the high level raiding thing elsewhere would understand the requirement of voice. The encounters are complex, often too quick to keep up with chat, and one mistake can wipe the whole raid.
It really sucks when you have to reclear for a half hour just to have another shot at the boss. Now try to coordinate various roles in 18, 24, or 40 man raids when everything has to be spot on in at the instant a command is given. There is no other option.. but that's there, and CoX is what it is.
Raids in CoX are for the most part a semi coordinated mess, so don't confuse raids here with well scripted encounters that make other games what they are. CoX has done fine without them, but truth is that they are far more high stake and demanding elsewhere... to the point where you need voice direction from the raid leader.
Can't say I've ever used the in house VOIP much, well maybe Second Life somewhat, but the doom and gloom implied by the player base was always overdone on the initial announcement. It will make the game better for people who want to use it, and those who are anti-voice will just turn it off and keep going on about their business. Won't be any different here.

I will be inordinately unhappy if that's what the launcher turns out to be. I do not play Valve games, and Steam factors significantly into why. The CoH launcher is lightweight and, frankly, easy to skip. I want nothing to do with the downloading of patches or other data "streaming" in the background at times anything other than of my choosing.
[/ QUOTE ]
If I remember right, you can select what you want to update in the background. haven't looked at it in a while though, not since I played in the exteel beta.

I hate to say it but I think this is a bad business decision. I know too many people like me who aren't going to be interested in a niche tool like this. I'll be happy to be wrong.

how is an optional feature a bad decision?

Negaduck: I see you found the crumb. I knew you'd never notice the huge flag.
My standpoint is this may be 'too little, too late'.
I already have a ventrilo account, for the sole purpose of using it to team on CoH. This account is reserved for myself and my real-life friends only. The reason we broke down and got vent (which has saved our hides more often than not) is we do have a very good friend who is not only an extremely slow/bad typist, but is also mildly dyslexic, as well. It saves us from having the fight with one hand and hold the phone with the other.
While this is a good idea, I pretty much believe that anyone who has wanted to see this has already bought their own accounts through vent and other companies. Furthermore, anyone who has ever play Dungeons and Dragons Online can tell you that in-game communication is not always a wonderful thing. DDO's in game chat could be crystal clear at times, but usually sounded like trying to talk buried under the sea in a tarpit. So I'm skeptical about how the quality, compared to ventrilo, will be. Myself, I'm pretty sure I'll be keeping my vent account and just telling people 'my headset's broke...'.

The PlayNC launcher only streams updates in the background if you let it. You can configure various download options in its settings -- everything from auto-updates to no updates at all. You can also have the launcher set to exit after you launch a game so it doesn't tie up any resources when you're playing. It's not invasive at all (I used it for Tabula Rasa when I played).
As for voice comm, love it dearly -- with people I know. Using it with pick-up groups? I'm a bit more leery there but I'm sure any implementation that might eventually come to CoH will be optional, so no big deal.
[ QUOTE ]
Same here. There is no way in hell you'll be getting me to the use voice chat. Edit: My short time trying out my friend's XBOX Live and PC voice chats (for games I won't name) absolutely put me on the path of NEVER using them EVER again.

You know, I could swear one of our devs said almost exactly the same thing a few years ago.

My sentiment? Again, quoting Yahtzee, "a resounding 'ehhhhh...'"
I admit. I usually play "in character". I might sound like one or two of my characters, tops. Still could be useful for across-the-table banter, but I don't do too much of that. (I just go with the flow.)
