Discussion: NCsoft and Vivox Voice Chat

Great for those who will use it i guess. I never and won't ever use voicechat myself. Typing works fine.

I'm sure that for folks who are already using voice tech somewhere, it'll be nice to have it on a single launcher.

I do hope that this launcher isn't anything like the other "must install and run the game through this portal" launchers out there. Because I won't enjoy using something that I have no further interest in.

But for me, I don't use voice chat, won't use voice chat, and have no interest in it whatsoever. This game does not require voice chat. Quick typing, perhaps. But voice? No. I've been playing perfectly well for 4 years now, without it. I think I can live another 4 as it passes me by.

I haven't even got a microphone, myself.

Idunno - this stuff is really handy for intense firefights but in normal missions? It's rough on roleplaying (cute little girl with the barritone voice). Low end PCs haven't got the spare horsepower to handle it. Low bandwidth really dosen't.

I guess we'll have to wait and see what form this takes.

i'll certaintly try it, but not something i've been pining for

What's a voice font? Is it something the Pocket D patrons can use to pretend to be a girl?

Cool, any vague ETA on this?

Sorry gang, no answers to those questions are available at this time. This announcement is more for the business side of things, with the actual goods to come later as the tech is put to use and made ready for consumption by users.

So what I'm curious about is whether or not the game launcher will be changing as well. Right now, the updater just loads a web site (specifically, this one) and calls home to check for updates.

When Tabula Rasa was released, it looked like NCsoft was going for a "universal" launcher for all of their games, a launcher that would display news and info like the current one, but that would be used to launch any of their games that a user had installed, and that ran in the background and would download and install updates even if the player wasn't at their computer. It looked pretty neat, and I think they even had it working with City of Heroes, but they never pushed it out as the replacement launcher.

Which is good, because frankly I don't *want* nor need yet another steam.exe on my computer... I mistrust 'company launchers' from experiences with that one, anyway.

*shiver* Voice chat is a bad idea, but at least it's not integrated into the game.

[/ QUOTE ]

I agree completely.

Please don't link it into the game so you can see if it is on or off, that way people won't assume you have it.

Meh... Just Meh.

Option to turn off please...I am not interested in hearing people breathing and giggling nonstop.

The reason I play CoH is that I only use Vent when doing pvp...it's otherwise a welcome respite from chatter. I do NOT want to log in to beat up some Hellions and have to hear mindless chatter.

Me. If I wanted to hear people's voices, I'd call them.

Great for the people I care, doesn't bother me who doesn't care and won't use the NCSoft launcher either.

QFT.

Don't stream people in the game feed please. Last thing I need.

I will make you a deal:

I will opt IN to all in-game ads if you allow me to opt OUT of having to hear other people ingame. Last thing I want is game sounds drowned out by chatter.

Me, I have zero desire to talk to random people I meet on the internet. My friends that would be a different matter but random people no. One of the reasons I quit DDO was the built in voice chat.

I will be inordinately unhappy if that's what the launcher turns out to be. I do not play Valve games, and Steam factors significantly into why. The CoH launcher is lightweight and, frankly, easy to skip. I want nothing to do with the downloading of patches or other data "streaming" in the background at times anything other than of my choosing.

There are ways they might do this right, but I do not like what I imagined after reading what you have described.

Edit: I am unlikely to use this in any case, not because I don't talk to people, but because I don't just talk to people in NCSoft games. I'm not interested in a 3rd or 4th chat tool when I have a couple that already do what I want and let me communicate with people in other games/environments.

I hate to say it but I think this is a bad business decision. I know too many people like me who aren't going to be interested in a niche tool like this. I'll be happy to be wrong.

As a point of clarification not included in the press release specific for City of Heroes and City of Villains, this new voice chat technology will be used through the PlayNC Launcher and not directly through City of Heroes.

[/ QUOTE ]

LH? Any information on how the tech will be applied, bandwidth costs and such? Any links to NCSoft pages about the information?

Still here, even after all this time!

My first thought was "Eeek" followed closely by "Ewww" with an "Urk" as the period.

After further consideration, I probably won't be using it (pigs could fly) but I don't really mind one way or the other about its inclusion.

However, as an inveterate non-guildy Pugger who occasionally gets on a team composed of nearly all same-guild SG members who don't say a word in team text chat all mission (and who I usually find out later are on one of the more popular 3rd party chat systems), I cringe a bit at this awkward silence becoming more of a norm rather than the anomaly it is currently.

So...huzzah for awkward silences (at least for us Infocomers).

Ok, let me be the voice of DOOOMMM.

Only my doom is based in reality, not just an intense dislike or paranoia...

And it all revolves around the "Alt-Tab" crash. For most users, we know that when we Alt-Tab (or minimize one program and then maximize another) there's always a chance for a fatal crash in the CoH client.

And so, the few times I used a voice client for CoH with it running in the background, Alt-Tabbing to the voice client to activate it or change settings eventually resulted in a CoH client crash. In the end, I moved the voice client to a laptop running next to my desk top.

And so, if the new voice client integrated into the PlayNC launcher is an 'Alt-Tabbable' background client, well then, it will be a complete failure until the CoH devs finally squash the Alt-Tab bug. In fact, if the PlayNC launcher is an 'Alt-Tabbable' background client, then that will also be a disaster (and maybe the reason we haven't seen it yet).

Considering that we've had the Alt-Tab crash since for ever... I doubt it will ever get fixed, which means no PlayNC launcher or voice clients for us.... ever.

Which I really find a shame.

Luckily this is well enough established a game that I don't think introducing a voice chat option at this point will make that big an impact.

If it does, I guess I'll just be soloing more while trying to find "non-voice" teams.

Same here. There is no way in hell you'll be getting me to the use voice chat. Edit: My short time trying out my friend's XBOX Live and PC voice chats (for games I won't name) absolutely put me on the path of NEVER using them EVER again.

If it gets to the point that teams in general require it for me to be on their team, that will be day I say good bye to COH.

In addition if we do get this "new launcher" it better not be craptacular like the FFXI launcher or any of the others that you need to d-load content for the streamer first before you can even get to the game and then download any necessary patches for the game.

The idiocy of that is ingrained in my head from my very short time with the crapfest known as FFXI. (Don't get me started on how much I despise that game, its login setup and it just in general.)

Voice chat is quickly becoming a requirement for any MMO. It is just far too convenient to just talk rather than typing everything out. It is just a fact of life we'll have to accept. The days of being able to type out instructions over ooc chat like we did when raiding Fear and Hate in Everquest are long gone. It is just nice to see PlayNC also capitalizing on integrated voice chat for their launcher.

[/ QUOTE ]
Do what? It's not even necessary for World of Warcraft. Blizzard's added a bunch of quality of life improvements specifically aimed at reducing dependancy on voice chat, even.

A convenient avenue for voice chat might be neat to have, but I don't have a microphone, so I'm not sure if I can take advantage of it. That, and my issues with mics and telephones. I'm on the phone a lot at work, and I'm starting to get sick of being "ma'am"ed all the time, no matter how deeply I try to talk.

Nice for those who want it, I guess, but it's mostly just going to be an annoyance for me. I don't like voice chat, I especially don't want to use it when playing characters for whom my voice wouldn't be appropriate, and I don't want to have to put up with endless pressure to turn voice chat on when I just plain don't want it. Hopefully most players will choose to be polite about it and respect other players' decisions to abstain, but it feels like this could just turn into one more excuse for some people to be jerks.
