The company who bought ABP took a risk.

*IF* a company were to buy CoH it would be a lot less risky. CoH wasn't dying. It has an extremely loyal and dedicated fanbase who will be here for a long, long looooong time to come if given the opportunity. Taking a chance on CoH would be more of a sure thing than a gamble.

There's hope as long as we keep hope alive. Send the e-mail to Valve. Send it to EA. Send it to anyone! Don't give up before we've even gotten started. Sure it may seem like a long shot if a small handful of people send e-mails to Gabe Newell. But if hundreds do? Thousands?

Anything is possible if you try. So let's try.
It's not the IP getting bought by another company that people are naysaying, it's the "Save us Gaben!" Valve circle jerk that is. Valve's MO is to pickup small teams from mods or inde games with potential and give the people behind them the resources to realise their potential. CoH was a moderately successful MMO with a big company behind it. It's had its time in the sun, and while it has a very passionate fanbase it's a niche title that never really had widespread long term appeal. I think one day Valve may well work on an MMO since they've been branching out recently with Dota 2 and Gabe has seemed pretty interested in them in the past, but if they did i think they would want to build it from the ground up rather than acquire an 8 year old title with limited appeal. It's fine to throw your hopes behind another company picking the title up but don't do the whole Gaben patron saint of gaming, EA literally hitler thing.

    PYF CoH Memories

I haven't played this game for a couple of years ago but i heard they were sutting the servers down which was a shame. My fondest memory of the game was killing FOTM kids in Recluse's Victory on my Ice/Ice dominator with some other villains on Virtue. IOs had just come out and people got hella mad at permadom, with crybabies coming to the forums to ask for us to be banned for exploiting and hurting their feels . The most memorable moment though was when this rude dude showed up one day and liked being dominated...

    Yeah...

Also shoutout to the CaH/VC crew even though i can't post there any more. It was fun posting about videogames and Doctor Who and Twilight before they clamped down on it.

So what are your favourite CoH memories?

EDIT: Don't kid yourself though, Valve has no reason to pick up a dying, decade old MMO.

I agree with his conclusion that it wasn't really Star Trek but it was fun to watch anyway! Also it was better than the TNG movies. Discuss

I watched The Room the other day and that had a pretty great ending.

Just because it's appropriate for young people doesn't suddenly mean that they're the only ones who are supposed to enjoy it. And SMB3 nostalgia has been running strong since the SNES was released (and has been measurable as such since the internet hit its stride).
Can you link me to this evidence that proves i'm wrong? Anecdotally i know a bunch of people who bought a Wii because Wii Sports looked fun then they didn't really buy anything else except Mario because they remember Mario being fun. That's also how my sister got hers, from some woman trying to sell it off because she got bored of Wii Sports and Mario Galaxy.

But what is the demographic for that game? (I honestly have no idea) What Nintendo did right this time is market the Wii to people who would impulse buy it for the waggle stick and aren't really in to gaming traditionally. I'd also venture to guess that the original Nintendo generation are reaching an age where they have their own kids and want something to play with them. My argument is that it's a time sensitive issue, you can't extrapolate data from today and assume it would be true in the mid 90s.

A mature rated game does not mean it is better. It just means that it can include things that adults think the younger ones should not see.
That's great and all for you gaming connoisseurs but when your customers have grown to teen/early 20s you're probably not going to be winning them all over with Banjo Kazooie when they could be playing Metal Gear Solid or Gran Turismo or something.

Could you explain this analogy for the non-manchildren?
  12. Someone post a link to his front page or whatever he has please.

Also the reason Sony succeeded was because Nintendo kept making games for babies when their original customers were growing up. Now they are somehow successful again by making games for babies and old people.

You're hearing the horror stories from the people who failed the classes. It's just as likely that he wrote terrible papers.

No, it's just it goes against the one thing that defines the medium, the interactivity of it. The only justification for videogames as an artistic genre is that you interact with the story which is what no other medium can offer (besides some plays i guess). By choosing a simple, linear game that you play through once because it has a cool atmosphere as the one game to represent it as a genre is doing it a disservice. Make them play Deus Ex, as even though it's a pretty rough game by today's standards, what it represents is the ideal for videogames as a genre.

Of course that whole argument is based on the assumption that the course's aim is to expose students to paragons in different artistic forms. Since it's about the students questioning what it is to be human i guess they can go with portal because it's about machines using humans as lab rats or something. But they should still make them play Deus Ex because the entire damn plot is literally about what it is to be human.

  20. The problem with it is that increases the value of piracy. If i'm a super big fan of a film (and thus most likely to pay to see it), why would i wait two weeks to see it when i can see it now?
  21. Everyone has that one idea for a game that they think would be the greatest masterpiece of all time, but what do you think would make the worst game?

For me, it would have to be a mediocre first person shooter set on a ye olde flying city in which you have to battle steampunk cyborgs and roll your eyes at the plot's simplistic commentary on a mid-20th century philosophical movement. Also, you'd be able to kill every enemy with a pair of pliers.

    What's yours?
  22. Two weeks after release on the internet, 6 months IRL.
