How Steam sales saved a Developer

So, a company goes from having several hits and a proper office, to having to move out, sell their furniture, and code from their bedrooms. Yet thanks to the downright crazy sales Valve offers through Steam, they were able to bank enough cash to have a years worth of capital to continue development.

That is truly fantastic. I understand that they greatly improved The Path's circulation as well, even if the sale was so cheap it didn't up their profits dramatically.

People really did trash Valve for Steam in it's early days, but more and more it's proving to be one of the best things to ever happen for the health of PC gaming.

I'm working on my own designs for a game. On the very distant, off, and improbable chance that it becomes marketable, I'm going to Steam with it first. Not a doubt in my mind that getting it on Steam would be my gold medal.

It does seem like Valve is willing to take chances with what it puts on Steam.

They are willing to put smaller indie titles upfront and center, stuff that would never see the light of day (woo go Eversion!). I didn't purchase the games in said sale but then I own a signed copy of Uplink (can't remember what you Americans called it) and had already purchased Defcon.
