Issue 12 Discussion: The Midnight Squad
[ QUOTE ]
Is this a Hero only feature?
[/ QUOTE ]
Yes, co-op on this would be nice.
"I never said thank you." - Lt. Gordon
"And you'll never have to." - the Dark Knight
Well.. since comic book Magic has a habit of involving both Heroes and Villians.. it is quite possible the Midnight Squad will be recruiting from both factions in their war against the Rikti and to save time.
After all, most villians don't want to destroy the world.. just rule it..

We also have information about the Midnight Squad on the plaques for the Historian badge. The question is, will we be learning something about the yet unidentified super-powered mercenaries that raided the Midnight Squad's research center, killing 47, and causing the creation of the UN Special Council on Super Human Acivities, back in '99? I always suspected that it was connected to Hero Corp, but it will be interesting to see if any details emerge.

Hm... remember when a certain someone stole Baby New Year? That sounds pretty antagonistic to time itself... AND he only shows up in co-op events... it's Snaptooth!
I wouldn't read too much into the "L" in "lost". Someone may have done that on accident since they use the cap version so much.
Regarding Midnighters, there is an arc where you rescue a brother and sister who are the children of one of the orignal Midnighters and one of them (brother, I think) is going to become a Midnighter himself by the end of the arc. Also Buck Salinger was at least an associate of the squad. It sounds like maybe all but one super-hero member of the squad were killed but there were various researchers, investigators, etc that survived too.
This does sound like a great expansion.

I was re-reading the Issue 12 teaser and this line stuck out at me:
The Midnighters hold many secrets within their walls, including a highly coveted Ouroboros crystal, enabling them to travel to the far reaches of time. There is a familiar threat in an ancient land and the Midnighters need the help of both Heroes and Villains to stop it.
Could that be a co-op Hamidon raid?

It could be this is just content added to existing zones. It doesn't specifically say this is a zone.
[/ QUOTE ]
Excellent point, I had completely overlooked that it didn't actually specify that it was a zone just new content.
So now heroes have more zones and more content than they need while Villains run the same story arcs over and over. ^_~

Except that the Midnighter Club was already leaked on the search list for zones...

it seems like City is trying to play catch up with other games based on Fantasy content. I know there have been fantasy elements throughout and fantasy is no stranger to comics but it's never been a real FOCUS. In a sense, it seems like they are trying to cash in on the popularity of fantasy based games.

I'd say comics have been setting the precedents long before MMOs were more than vaporware. Otherwise Marvel's Savage Lands is just a Conan ripoff and DC's Thanagar is just Flash Gordon with a bunch of Hawk-man clones (some people may agree with both of these statements). Not to mention the boatloads of alternate magical realms and "Elseworld" timelines both companies have employed over the last couple decades. Comics have "borrowed" from other genres.. well.. since there's been comics!
[edited to add] I second the notion that the level 10-20 introduction sure-as-shootin' needs to be available to villains as well. I know a certain Dominator who specializes in Madness magics that'd stop at nothing to travel back in time 30-odd levels to sneak a peak in the Squad's musty libraries!
I wonder if this means we'll get to see more of Numina ingame? :O
She's one of my favorite signature heroes and I think she doesn't get enough screentime as is. (Her TF doesn't count, it's more about the Woodsman than herself) Aside from TFs and Ouroboros, she's only seen in one mission Villainside via the first Ghost Widow arc.
I would be so very amused if Numina's, say, an NPC ally in one of the missions. ^_^

R U serious? The new 10-20 content is heroes only? It's not like heroes don't already have 10x as much content for lvls 10-20. Please tell me I am wrong.

Zones, Will there be more VILLAIN specific ones?
[/ QUOTE ]Possibly. More likely to see new zones that both factions can access, either through co-op play or through competing storylines. I'm not sure I agree that villains really need more exclusive zones...there are a lot of zones hero side that aren't used that much. Wouldn't make sense to spend all the time to make a bunch of villain only zones so they could sit unused too. Really nothing to do with how many people are playing villains...doesn't make any more sense to make exclusive hero content either. That's really more of a Posi quesiton though.
[/ QUOTE ]
Makes me wonder what's going on, BAB says no new villain zones because heroes don't use all of theres and that it also dosen't make any sense to make more exclusive hero content and than they go and make an exclusive hero zone?
I would love some clarification on this new 10-20 zone.
[/ QUOTE ]
I think you are seriously mis-representing BaBs words here. He didn't say there would be no more villain only zones, he only said that HE didn't think they would be needed. He gave his opinions, not that of the entire CoX developement team. Plus in the very beggining he did say "Possibly" so there could be more Villain zones in the future. He also stated that this question was more of Positron's domain.
I think it is important to remember that BaB , incredibly cool as he is, is the animations guy, he is not the end all be all of what happens in the game or the zones etc. I think it also helps to read ALL of red name posts, not just part of them.
Also, any ideas of what the "Midnight Club" Zone will be? Perhaps something like the Vanguard base in the RWZ for the Midnighters?
"Where does he get those wonderful toys?" - The Joker
Ok, I can't believe no one has said this yet.
Remember those letters? You know, the ones in Ouroboros arcs? That we don't know who they're from?
Methinks we know now! Must go reread!!!

But they need MORE. Just because.
Heh, I'll be interested to see how it's explained that The Midnight Squad - a premiere Hero supergroup - is willing to work with Villains. With Vanguard, it sort of made sense since they operated in pretty much of a gray area anyways. I hope this doesn't just mean Villains are going to get more "heroic" storyarcs "in the name of defeating a common enemy".
Whoa! Hey! Waaaaaaait a minute!!!
*slams breaks*
What about the Positron TF revamp? Is that in I12...?
Whoot! I remember Hero 1 was going on about how much he wanted to do stuff for Midnight Squad at least year's Meet and Greet. Congradulations to him!
Since the 35+ level Midnight Squad stuff is co-op, I suspect the intro missions will be as well. If only because it seems to be the way most new content is designed these days, to ensure that villains and heroes get access to equal amounts of content but with only half the needed work.
I'd be flabbergasted to be wrong.
Now I get to have my Midnight Squad characters actually join up!

Judging from the description, it seems like this is Hero only content? Am I incorrect in this assessment? And not that I'm complaining but adding new content is great, but making it Co-op between villains and heroes, is not so great. Why not some unique content for villains? New zones and story archs for the red side instead of sharing it with the heroes. Cause there's really nothing red side that would make a hero go "Whoa! They got THAT?!? I gotta try a villain out for that new content" or whatever.

Sounds like the 35-50 stuff is for Villains, unknown about the 10-20 stuff.
I'm with you on the co-op stuff. I'm thinking we're going to see a lot more of that (which BaB pretty much confirmed recently). It's a great way to have Issues that give content to both sides of the game rather than one getting next to nothing. It's not such a great way to make villains feel villainous, however.

I'm hoping they start introducing parallel villain/hero content rather the co-op. Like Ouroboros, give heroes and villains their own version of each zone with each having their own distinct story arcs (of course with Ouroboros there are only two differences).
For example, it sounds like the villains in this case would be very interested in acquiring whatever it is the heroes are after for their own personal gain. They could even reuse mission art for that.
That would be a little more work, though, because you'd have to write dialog for both tracks, and each would probably have at least some significant mission scripting differences. But it would solve the problem of keeping villains villainous and sharing art assets at the same time.
