Issue 12 Discussion: The Midnight Squad
Excellent post Epic_Hero!
Interesting. Makes me now wonder what is going to be in that new roman content. High level coralax? That would be interesting, now wouldn't it. Wild speculation, and i am sorry about that, coralax and romans fighting? Maybe under water zone? nah that is too much, the devs don't consider this issue that big, but isn't 13 supposed to be pretty big? Interesting thought. Now I am kinda excited about this roman stuff, before, i was like time travel, ugh to the past...oh well. Hmmmm. Stop the coralax in the past at some monumental battle? Hmmmm
just a question, why romans?
with statesman having a power called "zeus lighting" i could have understand some greek feathure but romans...
we really don't know why roman, but there is a refernce to roman with coralax, and coralax wiill now be in the hollows, of all places coming with issue 12. War Witch has placed them in Red River. Shields are partially worked out, and the NPCs using them is atest of itself. Why not kill two birds with one stone, major plot line, new power set, and rework the hollows to match the story. The big picture may not come togther until i13 tho.
Not sure what this expansion is heading toward. Google Coralax, and you will see the roman, and now i am reading more closely about Midnight Squad but from what i have seen, MS ia associated with COT and Ritki. And CoT was born in the 1890s according to the official web site. Nemisis in the 40s i think. Most things do not date back past 20s, there are exceptions, but most villain groups are relatively new. Coralax are much older it seems.
MS and roman is interesting. Coralax seem to be the only reasonable explaination of why roman. Maybe someone else has an idea of roman. But this is a video game, the rules can change anytime they want them to.
so roman cause of heroes?
and villain side?
not sure i ever saw a reference to romans in a coralax plot.
for the shield thing , i assume greek had shields too.
from paragon wiki
The Shaper is an arch-villain who serves in the Coralax faction. Calystix the Shaper, also called Calystix the Zealot. The first records of a priest called Calystix date from ancient Rome, where a Legion discovered an ancient temple to a Cult of the Shaper. This cult was led by a high priest called Calystix who ordered the townspeople to slay the Legion. The soldiers were nearly overcome, but they won and put the temple and the town to the torch for their abhorrent practices. Later records of a Cult of the Shaper led by Calystix re-occur in the middle ages, and again during the Enlightenment. The last known occurrence was in a small Massachusetts fishing village in the 1920s, though it is unknown if it was lead by a priest called Calystix, as the Cult was destroyed by the American Navy for crimes of piracy and cannibalism
This plot line, in cov, has some great underground maps for cov.
It could still very well be the Circle of Thorns. The story arc: The Library of Souls has a reference to one of the soul crystals that you recover containing the soul of a Roman centurion.
I hope not, you gave me so much hope for something new with an unusual twist...
Let's hope the new dev team likes to dream, when given the right input...
That new Character Creator system. I wonder if they allow you to create your own custom saved sets this time. Maybe save it as a file in your own hard drive?
That's what I really hope to see if it's possible.
I'm sure this has been said, (wow this post is late), but didn't anyone notice that "it will be Lost" forever? With a capital L, and there's a group of enemies called Lost...Just puttin that out there if no one said it before, I'm too lazy to read
There are two story arcs that refer to anchient Rome. Hero side there is the Path of the Dark, which is a front for the nictus. There will be nictus involved in issue 12, nictus with shields no less, just trust me on this.
Villain side, there is the above mentioned cult of the shaper. I think it's likely that they will be involved too.
The third likely plot line involves the fountain of Zeus (although it would be the fountain of Jove to the romans). This was discovered several hundred years earlier by the three Furies (read Web of Arachnos novel) who became incarnates. However it can also be infered that it was discovered at the same time by three evil counterparts: the gorgons. the incarnate Stheno has apeared in CoV, and is the mother of the snakes in the Rogue Isles. I wouldn't be suprised if one of her sisters (Medusa or Eurayle) apears in issue 12, with snake followers.
The forth plot possiblity is time travelers from the present, such as the Council, 5th Column and or Nemisis cropping up.
I think any involvment by the CoT in the Cimmerora story highly unlikely, not only are they supposed to be inactive at this time, they are already an overused and unpopular group.
The 10-20 Midnight Squad missions may well involve the CoT though.
I also think the Midnight Squad will turn out to have very close ties to the Vanguard.
You know, this could be an excellent opportunity for some antagonistic content-sharing, as opposed to all the cooperative we've been seeing recently. Unlike the missions that were retconned to be antagonistic, this can be made properly so from the start. It allows for content sharing without explaining why a hero group is working with the redsides, and makes a strong counterpoint of the all-too-common 'fake-hero' content sharing. Finally, it would be a fantastic way of introducing the new system of branching dialogue that's been announced.
Think about it. You get your first mission, from the Midnight squad or an Arachnos mystic, to find some magical artifact, to find an NPC of your opposite number on the other side. If you beat them then you get another hunt mission, which turns out to be a fake, and you must now defend your initial find from the hero-villain trying to reclaim it, but becuase you beat them before they've brought backup. If you lose to them, your next mission is to introduce the fake mission to them, and then attack the artefact while they're out, fighting them singly as an ambush at the end. Even a few missions along this line would be a fantastic addition.

I have wondered if this might have something to do with the Coralax, their appearance in the Hollows with I12 has reminded me that the Cult of the Shaper first appeared back in Ancient Rome where they were "apparently" defeated.

Thats an excellent point. It's something to think about.
