Issue 12 Discussion: The Midnight Squad
no problem with the heroes getting the lion's share of the 10-20 content this time around so long as the villains get something similar down the line. (hell, only reason i dont run villains more often is that i was bored getting the same 4 contacts with each villain, but that's me) not necessarily a new zone, but a half dozen or so new contacts and mission arcs 10 - 25.
still, this looks incredibly awesome anyways, and im always a sucker for more content for the high level monkeys. more content means more reason to craft more alts
I am with a TON of other folks who say if there are ANY Nemesis involved I am gonna kidney punch somebody!

It's very likely that the Midnight Squad - being 'clandestine' and magic orientated - can easily straddle the line between good and evil. I'd expect that all the Midnight Squad content in I12 is available through both Paragon City and the Rogue Isles (even though the missions might be different, the content will still be there).
That sounds awesome!
Thanks a lot for Issue 12, so far from what I have read it is going to be one of the best updates!
When does it come to the training room now? ? ?
Hmm, hmm... are we there yet?
This whole issue is super sweet. Im about to get my first hero to 50 and then ima start a PB, this will be perfect to lvl a new toon again with.
I love the concept of expanding upon a group in the COX Mythology such as they are doing here.
However, I am a bit put off by the whole, this hero group needs both heroes and villains to help.
And a little concerned that this new Level 1-10 Content appears to be hero-only.
I'd find a "rogue mystical group" or "lone dark archmage" heretofore unmentioned except in shadowy whispers. Recruits various villains for jobs that while yielding specific rewards for the villainous characters, have "uncertain" and "mysterious" results that don't necessarily benefit them, but achieve this "groups" goals whatever they may really be.
This could lead to similar missions, with slightly different twists, such as done with Ouroboros. This would also open the possibility of expanding the villain-side content without necessarily requiring the "same" zone for heroes.
To be frank, I'm getting tired of only having Mercy to go through for my first five levels, and Port Oakes for the next five. I'd really enjoy more content that while it may parallel the hero side, is for villains. If I thought is was as easy as a copy / paste, I outright storm NCSoft demanding it. But since very little is as easy as what we'd like, I'm hoping is that Positron and NCSoft as a whole will take this idea into consideration for future issues.
But I'm looking forward to seeing the "Midnight Club". Would have been nice to have a screenshot of that in the announcement.
I have always hoped that origins could have a little more impact on the game than they currently do. The Midnight Squad arc gives me an idea in this direction.
It would make sense that any Magic Origin hero or villain would be trusted by an all-arcane organization than would a Tech or Mutation. I am not suggesting that the main story be ONLY accessible to Magic Origin, but there should be 2 to 3 sub-plots that they could get.
This would also open up the opportunity to have similar groups/story archs in later issues. One for science, technology, natural and mutation; each one with a main story playable by everyone and a series of smaller ones open only to the correct Origin.
I also think these sub-stories should have single origin enhancement rewards for playing through them.
My mind wanders so often you've probably seen its picture on milk cartons. - Me... the first person version of the third person Steelclaw
I agree, damage types by origin, so someone could have a weakness versus Magic and anyone of magic origin could actually do more damage / hit easier etc. But that isn't how it was designed. So Be It.
I'm finding that last statement a surprise, I haven't done anything with an SO other than sell it since IO's came out.
Prior to IO's, I still never used TO's or DO's (except early on in my first couple of months before I came to understand the system.)
SO's as a reward isn't a reward. Just give me the 10K and send me on my way.
[sarcasm]
Hey, cool, two of the major "features" of this issue are devoted to levels 10-15, the fastest and most content-bloated levels of the game. That was smart.
[/sarcasm]
I just don't get why they insist upon adding content to areas where I already never see more than half the content. I also don't get why the leave a sucking void in levels 30-34. Just... ugh.
This 10-20 arc is going to be exclusively flashback content for me--without Stamina, as a kick in the teeth. I'm certainly not skipping Yin-O's or Safeguard missions, and I'll probably continue to do the two (long and XP-heavy) TF's in that range due to the way the recipe drop pool changes at higher levels.
I just really don't get what they're thinking on this one. 30-50 would have been a much more interesting level range.
So, this sounds great and all, but what exactly will there be for my level 50 to do? It sounds like maybe there might be a TF or Trial hidden in there somewhere. Anything else? I'm not reading much that sounds like it is really for level 50s.

Oh, I agree with you on that, I would likely only sell it myself. However, take into consideration that the story arch is appearing for a relatively low level group and the SO becomes a bit more valuable.
Also this is not a long series of missions like a TF, just a few, so giving out rare recipes or the like would open it up to foaming at the mouth farmers. A solid mission completion xp and inf bonus and a small shiny would be much more appropriate.

Why do the devs hate every character over level 20 and player that has a character over level 20. This midnight content will have missions and contacts that wont be accesed by higer level charcters. At least give me the option do the content as my my own mission or place each and every story arc and stand alone mission into the flashback system.
I pay full price to play this game and i want to have full access to every bit of the content with each and every charcter. I want every side mission and every contact that enters my contact bar.
Or at least tell me that there is something in the works better the Orubuis fishy thing.
If im told im overqulified to play your game. Does this mean your underqualifed for me to pay you to play this game?
Since you seem to want to tell me wich content i can access and who i can have as a contact.
I really want to do every mission in this game with the same charcter. Its sort of advanced badge hunting. But i want to do those missions as real missions form a real contact. And as my real mission
I thought the devs were listing to us when the made the Rikti content 35+. It seems they have fish in thier ears.
Dont give me swiss cheese content i want solid content. Don tell me what my charcter has already lost access.
If all the content the midnite crew has down to to the last mission is arranged in a nice neat story arcs without any filler
stand alone missions. Then things would be a little palatable.
But its a bunch of evill smelly rotten rotten grapes. When cryptic advertises GREAT NEW CONTENT FOR OTHER PEOPLE.
Or at least let me talk to a special contact that lets me /levedown so i can at least enjoy it completely.
I think its only fair since im paying the complete price for a
complete subscription that I would have complete access to all the content and complete every last mission as my mission.
Sorry about this rave. But I REALLY HATE being told theirs new content coming out an Im overqualifed to do any portion no matter how MINUTE

Godling, Don't forget the 35-50 content of the Roman zone.
Remember that a lot of people dread rolling new heroes because they've seen the lower content a million times (I'm one of them). With new powerset combos coming out people will be rolling a lot of new toons. This game survives due to peoples desire (due to the various power, costume and concept combinations) to roll alts. This makes that process less mundane. Chances are the 10-20 content isn't a huge chunk but merely a lead in to the roman zone. Hey, their giving us NEW stuff. Just because you have a 50 (figurative you) doesn't mean they are ignoring you. I8 gave 15-25 content. I9, I10 and I11 all had things for capped heroes and villains to do. I8 gave 15-25 content. I10 and I12 add to the much ignored lvl 35-40 content. I12 with the Roman zone yet again gives your 35-50 something else....not bad if you ask me.

You haven't even seen the content live yet, nor on test, yet you're frothing at the mouth how unfair it all is to you? Wow... How do you know that you can't exemplar down to do this content like you can with the Ouro contact missions?
Perhaps take a deep breath and relax, then wait for the code to go live before you freak out?
I don't think it was ever possible to do every single bit of content in the game on every character doing it 'as you level into it' as you're asking for.

I notice that "Lost" is capitalized... I think that they are a very underused part of this game, and I hope this means we will be exploring their ties to the Rikti more fully!

I missed that until now. I'd wager on intentional clue.
Remember: the Midnight Squad's HQ was nuked by the Rikti because they were such a threat. They were rather vulnerable to magic, as they had very little native magic (if any). They would have been very interested in "shifting" magic-sensitive people to the Rikti.
IIRC, there are a few stories heroside that address exactly that objective.
So, maybe... a solution to the war- a fallen Midnight Squad member that's fallen under the early stages of the shift (and thus now a member of the "Lost") that you must try to rescue and recover...

I wouldn't read too much into the "L" in "lost". Someone may have done that on accident since they use the cap version so much.

I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss that capital "L"... to quote Paragonwiki and their article on the Midnight Squad: "The Midnight Squad became a prime target for Rikti assassins, and the group's main headquarters was destroyed in a fusion bomb blast. Many of its more heroic sorcerers were captured in battle and are still missing to this day, presumed dead. "
We all know from the current arcs and the LGTF what the Rikti do to people they "capture".
First everyone should read this entry ParagonWiki - Midnight Squad. I'll wait while you do.

...
Ok, hopefully you actually read up on the Midnight Squad. Now a few thoughts based on reading up on them. First I suspect they may very well find the villains of the Rogue Isle's useful. Note that they started as a shadowy group of scholars and mystics meeting and talking about magic. Then they were drawn into heroics by The Dream Doctor and they battled the Circle of Thorns. This doesn't mean all of the members where squeaky clean or that The Dream Doctor wouldn't have over looked those shadowy aspects to fight the Circle.
In the 1980's the squad started becoming more secretive, maybe one of the reasons has to do with this issue. Again retreating to the shadows. In the shadows sometimes the difference between a hero and villain isn't all that much. I can well see them recruiting help where they can get it if the threat is enough.
Moving on to the Rikti war note that the Rikti targeted the squad with assassins and apparently captured many of the more heroic sorcerers of the squad during the battle that saw the headquarters destroyed by a fusion bomb. If you notice they are missing and presumed dead. Hero 1 anyone? Lost anyone? Rikti Mages anyone?
We are told that today while a handful of heroes remain active in the squad it primarily acts as a research resource. They may be turning their attention more to mentoring new mages and sorcerers than in fighting themselves. Note I don't say new heroes.
Known active members:
Tammy Arcanus - Numina
Ross Coldwell - Darkvine (deceased)
John Knox - Crimson Fist
Percy Winkley
Known researchers:
Buck Salinger - contact in Croatoa
Edgar Torvald - Murdered by the circle of Thorns regularly.
Hinckley Rasmussen - contact in Talos Island
Nathen Crane - Murdered by the Carnival of Shadows regularly.

There is also this bit of the Midnight Squad's history (plaque in Terra Volta) that may or may not be involved:
"In September 1999, super-powered mercenaries stole poisonous gas from a Terra Volta factory. Days later, they struck. They attacked the complex that once rested on this site, gassing the people within. When the Freedom Phalanx investigated, it was discovered that the facility had been a front for an undercover Midnight Squad operation. Several of the Squad's more secretive researchers had been living in this facilty, under the belief that this subterfuge would keep them safe. Forty-seven men and women died in the attack; to this day, no one knows who the perpetrators were."
-who were the attackers?
-did they travel through time to get at the Midnight Squad?

Just a comment on the villains of the 35-50 arc. The Midnight Squad tangled with a certain sect based out of Rome whose history was traced back to the Roman Empire... The Path of the Dark (a.k.a. the Nictus). I'm hoping we face Dark Novas, Black Dwarves, War Wolves, and various beings with shadowy powers. My Khelds can't wait.
I thought this post from Hero 1 should be reproduced here, since it refers directly to the Midnight Squad content:

Greetings: Crazy Monkeys
I wanted to pop in to quell some, but by no means all, of the rumors and general discussions that Ive come to love, admire and fear on the boards.
The Midnight Squad missions, of which there are multiple arcs, are equal in content for both Heroes and Villains. Heroes get a single longer StoryArc regarding the Midnight Squad and Villains get two shorter StoryArcs. All of these arcs tie in to the Midnighter Club and the Cimerora, as well as two other arcs (one hero and one villain) that we didnt mention in the release. As far as the line from the release, The Midnighters hold a secret that could bring the alien assault to an end, but without the help of the Heroes of Paragon City it will remain Lost forever. That line refers to the Midnight Squads hero StoryArc.
I hope that helps to clarify and redirect your discussions appropriately.
Stay true

Perhaps the "villain only"content for this issue is the VEATs. I'm sure a lot of work went into those, and it makes sense to have other stuff be co-op in I12. No doubt the next few issues will have efforts dedicated to other villain only content, including zones.
