  1. Make it faster and harder.

The notion that this would make it too hard for gimped builds is absurd starting from the current level of challenge. If the entire team was gimped and new players, then they might fail it on the lowest difficulty if they intentionally ignored details like the coolant belts. They'd still probably win on their second attempt, and recruiting even a single competent player would allow them to win easily.

The last one of these I failed was in i6, after ED and the GDN but before IO's and (obviously) SSK; the team lost some people due to connectivity. We had a level 27 Tank, my level 24 Scrapper, and a level 24 Blaster, and the mission was set for 6 level 31 heroes. The Tank was a newbie who took all but one of the coolant belts (I got the last one myself) and didn't know how to use them. We made it to the last wave.

The trial is far too slow and easy as it is for the "gimped newbies" excuse to work for a small or moderate bump in difficulty.

BS/SR might be worth a shot if you can do without Nin's toys.

I have this problem too. I'm doing OK on my Elec/Nin right now, but even in the 20's I started half-wishing I was SR. The extra toys in Nin are nice, but Slow resistance and Knockback protection are huge holes (even with IO's), and SR covers them. The recharge bonus from Quickness wouldn't hurt either, though it's a minor effect when you consider the set mule value of Blinding Powder.

I find that the effort of sorting through IO's in the NPC stores every five levels takes forever in the long run (always has, really). I'm in the habit of taking an hour or two to craft once a character hits about 22; I find that it saves me enough time later to be worth it and mitigates the classical frustration of getting weaker every level except 27/32/37/42/47.

If you're just worried about enhancement bonuses, it's not fantastically difficult to frankenslot your powers well (unless they're Targetted AoE--"dur dur dur, let's make the 4th-most-needed recipe the rarest drop type!" ).

Really? MA probably doesn't need the +Rech as much as some Stalkers, but I wouldn't want to miss Slow protection Redside. >_<
  5. I tried a Spines/Will once. I hated it, but perhaps it gets better after you pass your 20's. Ninjitsu is fun just because it's so unique; my current is Elec/Nin.

That's a good tip. I do that with my non-Stalkers, but it seems to annoy people worst with my Stalker (I'm new at Stalking too). This explains a lot.
  6. OK, thanks guys! (Also, I carefully read the long post. )
  7. I'm a little confused about what Real Numbers is showing me, so I'm asking here:

Assuming equal slotting values, does Thunder Strike or Chain Induction do more damage to its primary target when I attack from Hidden?

I'm not seeing the crudiness of corruptor pools, honestly. Electric/mu would be even, as would dark/soul...or so you'd think. But corruptors get big powers faster, and with AoE immobilizes as well. The pets aren't permanent, but they're plenty potent. Obviously the other pools are more disimilar, but I'd take corruptor pools easily.
Choosing Defender Elec for comparison seems unfair to me because (in my opinion) it is their weakest APP.

Defender dark gets 25% better results from Soul Drain and has double the up time on it, 25% better results from its armor (at the cost of 3 levels, which means you still get it for Numina, Eden, and Sewers), an excellent control if they already have a stun (which many do), and an endurance boost (which some builds can make good use out of). Corruptors can use their hold for stacking if they already have one (a less common situation), they get kicked in the teeth on Soul Drain (though the early spot is nice), and I find Power Boost to be limited in use at best.

There is a lot of hate for both PPP pets and Soul Transfer; personally, while I do find the pets useful, I also find Soul Transfer to be extremely powerful. I think it's a deserving Tier 9 power in its home set, so getting it at full strength in an APP is very impressive. (While I don't advance it as an argument because I know there are few who agree with me, I tend to regard Soul Transfer by itself as far stronger than any PPP.)

I agree that calling anything in this game "a doctor" or "+HEALTH" is "just plain ******* STUPID."

On the other hand, if you meant that calling a Blaster DPS is stupid: No, that's 1) metonymy and 2) true.

I find those teams fun on certain builds. They're a challenge.

I do refuse to invite people who self-identify as "healer" when I'm team leader, though. I used to view it as another wacky challenge, but then I ran a Dr. Quarterfield with a level 50 Empath who did literally nothing other than spam her first three Emp powers... to the point where I needed to use Awakens when I died. Ooh, forgot that part.

This definitely happens on Infinity, too. You'll spend several minutes on the CoH or CoV loading screen--literally, I timed it--while hearing things going on around the outside door, like people landing to use it or enemies fighting nearby. Eventually, the map picture + hint will flash briefly as the loading bar fills in a couple of seconds, then the entire team will burst through the inside door like the raiders at the end of a Rikti Ship Raid. Then one person says "sorry, long load times today" and four others immediately respond "like that for a while now."

I had a Posi TF last week where two people used Ctrl-Alt-Del to exit the game after a minute of loading. They were able to reload the game, log in, and zone into the mission a full minute or two before the other six people popped out of the door.

    Epic Pool Parity

I would love APP ally buffs! So much!

That said, I don't get some of the outlooks in this thread. Here's how I see it:
    • Blaster: Rise of the Phoenix and Repulsion Bomb both improve characters a great deal, and LRM is lots of fun (plus Surveillance is rather handy). At least 3 good sets.
    • Controller: Excellent damage all around, and forces you to choose (if going for effectiveness) between RotP, status protection, and the all-around high-powered Earth set. Extremely desirable sets, perhaps even too much so.
    • Defender:The Dark set is incredibly powerful, making you virtually unstoppable (especially with certain main sets) and then sticking in a self-rez for some actual immortality. The Psi set is a wet dream for people who like dirt-cheap purple set bonuses. The other sets have handy tools; Elec might be nice if you want melee damage and need better endurance management.
    • Scrapper: Body Mastery gives you your choice of endurance management, massive accuracy, health + endurance, ranged energy damage + def debuff, and targeted AoE energy damage + knockdown. It is incredible. The other sets are a bit meh unless you want them for style or ranged damage, but they're not bad at those things.
    • Tanker: The control can be a little handy, otherwise they get a similar analysis to Scrappers. Tanks probably don't need their APP's as much because they can use regular pools to directly boost their main job (taking hits), but their APP's do actually advance that well if used properly.
    • Brute: Gloom is excellent. Everything else is weak debuff, control, or ranged damage, all insufficient to drastically change your life.
    • Corrupter: A lot of weak controls (like some main sets already have) and a mixed bag of other effects. Scorpion Shield is rather nice for some builds. These might have the potential to be life-changing; unfortunately, this is also one of the most egregious areas of comparison. Would you rather have Soul Drain every 4 minutes with 1.7/6.8 base ToHit/Dam per target, or once every 2 minutes with 2/8? Would you rather get 20% resist from Dark Embrace or 27%? This is a place where direct comparison is possible, and where Villains get outright screwed. (Yes, their armors appear to be balanced against Blaster APPs rather than Defenders, but Blaster APPs have excellent non-armor toys; indeed, I don't usually even take their armors.)
    • Dominator: Some armors (again, nerfed) and some light debuff, with some sets able to self-buff (again, nerfed). More damage, as if they need it--many (most?) Doms would lose damage by using PPP attacks, since their own attack chains are so brutal.
    • Mastermind: KO blow does some real damage, but these sets are mostly defenses and holds. At least they got Defender defenses. Of course, as noted, these sets neither drastically improve your pets nor make the MM itself into a good damage-dealer.
    • Stalker: Leviathan gives good mitigation and pets are a nice distraction (especially as compared to Brutes), but this is also another area of direct insult. Take the large spikes of ranged+aoe damage a Scrapper gets at these levels and halve it, and you're still being too charitable (you can Crit with a Fire Blast, you can't Stealth Strike with a Mace Blast). Also, the snipes are terrible as powers and only mildly useful as set mules.
    • Soldiers: See Brutes. I must admit, Gloom and Dark Oblit both markedly improved my Crab, and Shatter was a bit useful on my Widow and my roommate's Bane.

In general, there are two problems (other than concept) with PPPs over APPs:
    1. APPs are a bit overpowered and tend to fill most weaknesses of a character, often resulting in a drastic change in play style and enormous power boost. PPPs are nice little bonuses for their users that tend to subtly enhance existing tactics.
    2. Any direct comparison attempt between the two is insulting (Scrapper ranged vs. Stalker ranged, Defender armor/buff vs. Corruptor armor/buff).
PPPs are arguably designed better. I would go as far as saying that APPs are the problem, but in the interest of not going back to the "sweeping nerfs" system of game design I think PPPs are clearly too weak and should be buffed.
  13. I'm new to Stalkers, so I'd like some advice.

    Specific thoughts:
    • I care more about hit-and-run and killing things than scrapping, so I'm trying to pump my damage a bit. I might be interested in suggestions for boosting my damage that compromise my defenses a little. I already compromised a bit of recharge, so I don't want to lose too much more of that.
    • No hyper-expensive IO's (multiple LotG, Miracle+Numina, PvP sets, or real purples)
    • I know Smoke Flash doesn't Hide you; I plan to use it to run in, kill something, and flee (e.g. crystals on the ITF or spawn bosses when I'm bored while waiting for a team). It's my understanding that people who hate the power aren't using it like that, they expect Hidden status. Correct me if it really is just bad, or if I don't really need it for hit-and-run (character is currently only 20).
    • I might go Mako instead of Ghost Widow, but I like GW for set mules... I may need to wait and see whether I need the mitigation from Mako.
    • Caltrops doesn't break Hidden, from what I hear; am I right that this might make it more useful, or at least more wacky fun, than the 2% defense from Combat Jumping?

    Terrible Lag?

I've been getting terrible lag on Infinity for the past ~3 weeks, and it isn't isolated to me. Rubberbanding throughout each mission has been the norm for my teams as well, and many (about half) say this has been going on for a couple of weeks for them, too.

It's bad enough that I'm actually most curious about the lack of wide public outcry (hence posting in General), which makes me wonder if it's just some sort of regional problem that is somehow infectious to teammates of those infected.

Does anyone know anything about this?
  15. Please tell me this works on Fusionette...

  18. I can half-understand the reason Malaise was removed (though I wish I could edit the costumes using it ), but I'd love to have the old suit jackets back!

As for clipping: One of my current costumes, a Longbow homage, has my character walking around with her ribs and elbows sticking through her tights, her shoulder pads lodged in her head, her cape bisecting her ponytail half-way up its length, and a longbow embedded along the length of her arm and ramming straight through the center of her skull. This is a new costume. If clipping is still a primary concern, don't let the devs look at the current options, or they'll be driven to drinking.

Edit: If you really want to see some wacky clipping, try Sonic Blast with shoulder spikes. You julienne-cut your own head on a regular basis.
  19. Admittedly, these threads come up often, but this one is actually good. It has a lot more info than most of them pick up. Better to reanimate this one than start yet another to fill this week's quota, if you ask me.

Technically it doesn't blend with the skin at all. It only ever goes over the top of leather/hide/scales.

Also: What is up with the raging lust for Broadsword? Valkyrie I can understand (as opposed to a Valkyrie axe or Valkyrie shields), but I would have expected things like ninjas with bows (we have a special power set for that!) or mutants with claws, and instead we get ninja broadswords and mutant broadswords. Even katanas got very little (1/2 of the ninja choices), despite there being appropriate models for them (mutant).
  21. I recently heard, on a channel, that the reactor core session has been changed from 2 minutes of fighting + 28 minutes of snack break to 2 minutes of fighting + 13 minutes of snack break. I haven't had a chance to play much lately, but this interests me.

    Can anyone confirm or deny?

    A straight answer! Thank you!

Does caging a tower make it harder for Recluse to munch up the party Tank, or was that just an incidental comment?
  23. Does that also apply to Recluse and his Lt.'s? I'm not clear on how to navigate enemy abilities in that site.
