I won't get my 48 month vet reward for quite some time (22 months), but I just have to wonder if a /Devices can have both the Targeting Drone and Buff Drone going at the same time?

One is a summon, and the other is a toggle, but can they animate together? Will we see people with two Drones circling their noggin? That would be kinda neat.

[/ QUOTE ]

Have "two" agree about the two targetting drones out at once being pretty cool looking.....

hee hee hee....I made a "punny".

Pretty sure it was already confirmed the buffs affected only the owner. So the page the Devs wrote up is either wrong or they made them team buffs just in the last few days since they were discovered. Frankly I think the Dev write-up about that is wrong.

[/ QUOTE ]

Isn't there a 'live update' before the pets are available? They could be changing them from the way they are now to a team buff.

No doubt. This is a cool pet and all, and the buff is nice and all... but i doubt i'll ever use it... I can't think of ONE of my 25 active alts that'd have a wisp/fairy/clockwork/orb following he everywhere he goes... well maybe ONE... i do have a tech FF/Archer the orb could work with... but still...

Not that i'm bashing it, but to me... it's MEH.

[/ QUOTE ]

Well... as far as *justification* goes... I think I remember in the UK thread that the description of the fairy was something along the lines of.. she was found/rescued... I figure that pretty much any AT/Origin can come up with some sort of reason for having one of these lil widgets...

The fairy was saved/captured (hero/villain) during a CoT mission... Wisps could be pretty much explained the same way. For the CW or drones, they could be either created by the character (Science/Tech/Natural) or given/stolen from a friend/foe...

The buffs aren't overpowering but nice... the pets are blown-glass weak.. so.. all around decent, IMO... and creating an in-game justification isn't all that difficult.. and this coming from a very NON-RP player.. heh

As for the concerns about "Vet Only" requirements for team make-up... I wouldn't be too concerned. I play on Champion, Victory, Pinnacle and Protector.. I am more often than not the "eldest" player on most teams I am on, and I have about 6 months left before I get them.

If people start *demanding* that their teams are made up of these OLD vets.. I think they're gonna be kinda lonely.

Peace

A forcefield defender can still provide ~95% defense to a veteran pet. Add a little sonic resistance, I think the pet could last longer than the first AoE.

[/ QUOTE ]
Yes I already acknowledged that possibility several times here.
Those people who think I'm simply being negative about this failed to give me credit for that.

Another possibility is that these buffs were ALWAYS intended to be team buffs, but back when they were tested last week that quality was bugged and only provided a personal, non-team buff. Also for all we know these things could still technically be bugged as we speak (i.e. the Devs -want- these things to be team buffs but they are still currently broken).

I will still stand by my belief that if these things turn out to be team buffs that they will end up being either too powerful or change the way people think about teaming. Zombie_Man made this point by implying we might start seeing chat messages like this: "LFT, 48 Vets only!"

I'm going to be getting these pets on May 12th so I'm certainly not concerned about this because it's something I'm years away from. I honestly believe these Vet Powers are too powerful as a team buffs regardless of who gets them. If that is in fact the Devs' intention you can bet I'm going to exploit them to their fullest potential before they get nerfed. This thing has nerf-bait written all over it.

I foresee 'long term vet only' teams in the future...

[/ QUOTE ]

Yes, that's a good point.

I can see team leaders being quite picky to choose 4-year vets over non-4-year vets when composing teams.

Ah well. One more year for me to go.

I think it's a pretty cool power and look forward to it.

Thing is I'll take credit for negativity as long as you all know what I'm being negative about.

People think I'm ragging the Devs for making a mistake in documentation, like that's never happened before.
Actually what concerns me is that they seem to want these buffs to be team buffs.

I happen to think that makes these Vet Powers 'must-haves' instead of 'nice-to-haves'.
I'll certainly exploit that as much as I can, but it won't surprise me to see it nerfed back at some point.

In reference to getting the 48 month rewards in March instead of April, if I remember right, they count from when your account was created and how much time paid/played. There's still some playing who were in the CoH beta. Even just 1 month in beta would let them get the 48 this month instead of next assuming they kept thier account active this entire time.

[/ QUOTE ]
With all due respect I can understand how people might believe it's meant to work that way but you are wrong about this.

When the Devs established the Vet Award system they specifically told us that whether or not you were involved in CoH beta or had an account before CoH Headstart would play NO part in determining your Vet Award status. Basically, according the Devs' own rules detailed in the Vet System FAQ, Vet Award status was supposed to start for EVERYONE the day the game went live.

What that means is that anyone who gets these Vet Awards before the actual proper anniversary date of a given award is in fact getting them via some kind of systemic bug which has been around ever since Vet Awards were introduced. Surprisingly enough this happens to more than just one or two people each time. In fact most of the time people on the forums know about an upcoming Vet Award MONTHS before they are due because there are usually enough people who get them that early to report about them. That's exactly what happened in this case for these Vet pets over a week ago now.

So we are left with the original question: If no one is SUPPOSED to be getting the 48 month Vet Award until the end of April why are the Devs making a big deal about putting the code for this in the game now? To me the reason is sadly obvious. For whatever reason the Devs either can't or won't fix the account problems which are allowing some people to get these things way, way too early. So instead of fighting it this time they decided to go ahead an officially announce/release it because they know it'll be happening anyway. Sort of a 'if you can't beat them, join them' tactic.

You can't directly control them and most things will kill them in about 0.5 seconds. I'm sure someone will figure out a way to make them effective alpha strike fodder but I honestly don't see that as a big deal one way or the other.

Well by your own estimation at least that roughly 1% of the population will be thanking the Devs.
There's no law that states "100% of the playerbase MUST experience 100% of the content of a MMO".
Not really sure why this would be much of a problem for anyone...

The buff part seems great.

But... I wish they were more "Comic bookish". Thematically I can't imagine any of my characters (who tend to silver age) having any of those as pets. (a few might use the drones). Fairies? Wisps? This isn't a Fantasy game. And Clock Work? Sure I get the easy part, the art was in the game already. But... how about something that thematically fits. Long Bow robot? Arachnos Drone? Maybe not. Anyway. JMTC. I for one care more about theme than numbers.

[/ QUOTE ]

My characters are ALL varying degrees of concept. Some are built purely on concept, and others have the concept determined after I choose what powers I want to try out. For all the people who worry about vet rewards or temp powers conflicting with their concept, or even the rewards' appearance clashing with their concept, this is a line of reasoning I used that always fit right in....

This is Paragon City. ALL Heroes (or Villains in the Rogue Isles) have become part of that society. The fact that you interact with contacts to get missions proves that. So for explaining temp/vet powers, a simple "I was given this/taught this by someone I befriended when I got to Paragon" or, if you're a villain "A stupid <insert NPC type here> tried this on me at Mercy Isle. It was simple enough for me to take/learn."

All my vet/temp powers and skills are just little souvenirs I picked up during my exploits, or skills taught by people I helped.

Anyone who gets this reward has been a loyal COX customer since launch. That may be a small percentage, but its a very important and very loyal percentage. Considering the average MMORPG subscribers sticks around for only a year, four years is phenomenal. And yup I plan on playing for as long as the game is around.

And jeesh it looks like you are going to get the reward, so whats this "nothing" you are going on about?

The devs very clearly left two generic choices the Wisps and drones.

Wisps could be Energy, Magic or Psionic projections or even exotic alien life forms.

The Drones could be scientific gadgets built or acquired by your character.

Comic book characters often come across fantastic tech and creatures from myth and legend regardless of their own origin.

Actually, players who have been with the game for 48 months, have placed more money in the system then you have. By your own logic, they SHOULD get rewarded. The longer your put money in the cooler stuff you get. I don't get why people who played the game a short time think they should have access to the same rewards people whove been paying a fee for YEARS should get. Plus anyone who gets this reward has been a loyal COX customer since launch. That may be a small percentage, but its a very important and very loyal percentage. Um...No. The fact is that w/o the current subscriber base this game wouldn't even be here. Why shouldn't I recieve whatever everyone else gets. You don't really think subscription fees from those who played since day 1 and never took a break is enough to keep this game profitable.

So enjoy your 48th month rewad..but just remember it's all of the current subscribers who helped you get it.

How to use the pet as Alpha foder even if its summon range is 1 ft...

Have super speed toggled, with a stealth IO in it or in sprint. (or some other power that gives you true Invis)
Summon fast recharge pet.
Run into spawn of critters.
You are invis so pet will grab all the alpha, it dies. All the best powers in the spawn are now recharging.
repeat for every spawn because pet is on a fast recharge.

Great for PBAOE type powers like nukes, holds, stuns, knockdowns, etc.
