I'm going to echo this.... Plant/Psi is devastating, but it's a build you don't here people talking about much. You get nasty AOE's plus a mini-tanking power (Carrion Creepers + Seeds of Confusion).

You basically have a tool for every situation. Plant/Fire is a nasty combo as well... but Plant/Psi is crazy good. I never knew why it wasn't a more popular build.
  2. Like everyone else, I think the "official response" is bull-crap. We all know there are buyers and interested parties. NCSoft has simply made a corporate decision to kill the game, rather than sell it.

I have no hopes for an "11th hour" save. This is it.. while the game may emerge in another incarnation but this current one is finished. I do want to see how it all ends, but it's clear to me that NCsoft has zero interest in saving or selling the game.
  3. Just a side note:

It is possible to create something very close to a CoX Mastermind in Champions, complete with pet controls.

It's not intuitive, and you have to be a paying member so you can go 'Freeform'. But it can be done. Right now I'm playing a toon with 4 "Dinosaur" pets and two support drones. Oh those support drones, they work how I always wished "Triage Beacon" did. They follow you and spam a cone heal, that actually heals for a lot!

You can also command pets to use certain "special abilities". The pets I've tested so far have good serviceability and resistance! I'm not good at guides and such, but here's some helpful info from the Wiki page:

    Quote:
Controllable Combat Pets are pets that are either controllable inherently (Tyrannon's Familiar, Wolves from "Command Animals", etc.) or pets that can be controlled through an upgrade (Upgrading Ritual Summons with "Meek Inheritance" allows them to be controlled).

Controlled Combat Pets are generally permanent until either killed or dismissed.

    Damage scales with Intelligence
    Health scales with Presence

If you have more than one controllable pet out, they all share the same pet command bar:

    Pet Commands
Attack - Commands your pet(s) to attack your target
    Dismiss - Unsummons your pets
Stay - Commands your pet(s) to stay where they are (they will still attack anything in range)
Passive - Commands your pets to follow you but ignore any enemies
Assist - Commands your pets to follow you and attack anything you attack

On free-to-play you're limited to archetypes with pre-selected powers that unlock at each level, but on a paid account you're selecting whatever powers you want.

Obviously, it still makes sense to try the free-to-play first, just to see if you like the game mechanics/can stand the cartoony look and so on. But I'd hate to see people dismiss the game purely on this count.

Agreed, once I figured out how to create a freaking DINOSAUR MASTERMIND, I was hooked.

Plus the game graphics have to be tweaked a little, the default settings are HORRIBLE! But I got some help from some friendly folks in game on tweaking. Upping the graphics and removing the "black comic book outline" go a long way. I get where they were going though, they wanted the look of the game to match the old champion pen and paper books.

I'm enjoying Champions a lot more than I thought. I've never been a Dragon/Fantasy type of game player. And I played the old school Champions Pen and Paper back in the day, so this game works out just fine for me.

The toon creator is a lot more versatile than COH's, and you can create just about anything.

*hint join the "COX" channel if you decide to play. Lot's of help and friendly COH'rs there.
  5. I've been playing around with DCUO and the Mental and Gadget trees feel very "dominating". The combat mechanics feel more like a console game though. Plus control in the game overall has very short duration mezzes.

But you can easily create a hybrid blast/control toon there. Again, like DC said nothing near as good as what we have here.
  6. There isn't much like a Dominator in any other MMO I can find. Most games follow the boring old heiarchy of "Tank", "Damage Dealer", and "Healer."

AT's like Masterminds, Dominators, and Brutes are very unique to the COX universe. There's nothing else like them out there I'm afraid.

I'd be glad to be proven wrong on this, really I would.

    2) We can work with Cryptic to license the engine just like NCsoft did.

    3) We can use crowd funding to hire developers to develop a drop-in replacement for the engine--possibly some of the very same developers who have been working on the game for years already.

    4) We can use crowd funding to hire developers to develop a new, better, shinier engine. More expensive and it would totally depend on the amount of crowd funding revenue available, but still a tantalizing possibility.

    5) Probably more options I haven't even considered since it's been less than 24 hours since I've been mulling all of this--and a whole lot more--over. My Skype name (tonyv.paragonwiki) and e-mail address (tonyv@cohtitan.com), Facebook page (http://facebook.com/tony.vazquez.3192), and CoH forums (http://www.cohtitan.com/forum/index.php) are all public if you feel I'm leaving out some other brilliant option.

And I'm not being facetious when I say that; if we're successful, I want this game to be the Green Bay Packers of the MMORPG genre, community owned and supported so that we would never have to worry about the team being sold, moved, or shuttered again.
I like where this is going. A game funded, created, and run by the players! Kind of crazy but isn't that what Community is all about. Also, I keep thinking about mission architect. If we can't get the full game running would there be a away to get the M.A. portion of the game functioning? I could see some interesting possibilities there.

Dude.. the Paragon Studios staff has been fired and the operation shut down. All development has been stopped and by Nov 30th the severs will be off. Is your dev rage so intense that you actually skipped the homepage announcement and posts in this forum lamenting these facts?

Wow... I'm not attacking you... just kind of in shock.

Thus beginning the decline of their other games.
Agreed. If people really want to do something, we should also make sure to advise everyone to remove their contact info and credit card numbers from their NC master accounts, when it all ends.

Our email addresses are valuable marketing dollars to NCsoft. And accounts with credit card numbers already on file are even better. So yes email away but if this all goes south, don't leave your data on file with NCsoft. Remove it all.
  10. I'm not going to pull the wings off a butterfly in front of you. But most of the speculation I've seen posted on gaming news sites, is very similar. NCsoft has a track-record of not selling rights to it's discontinued titles. They were also willing to pull the plug on a moderately successful enterprise in hopes of gaining more profits elsewhere.

NCsoft already knows how much money CoH makes and that there are 60k loyal subscribers to the game. They have no intention of selling it (and our valuable email addresses) to a competitor. It would be much more profitable to attempt to convert us into playing their other games.

Now, I'm not saying don't email Valve. If you think it might work go for it. But Valve (or anyone else) can't buy what NCsoft isn't going to sell them. And the fact that they chose to shut down a modest money maker rather than sell it, sort of tells us all they have no intention of giving 60k loyal fans to anyone else.

They want us for themselves, but they want us to play Aion and Guld Wars. :/

But hey if this works, I'll eat crow on this. So have at it!
  11. Well it looks like COH has ended. I've played this game for over 5 years and have enjoyed it thoroughly. From the turbulent days of the "Dom War's" to the "Dominator AT revamp.."

    And now it's all over....

There's no AT in any game like a Dominator.. and I for one am going to miss playing them. Guess it's time to have as much fun as we can, until the final curtain is drawn.

Hope to see some of you on.. and maybe we can get together one last "All DOM Team Run" before the lights turn out.

    *Sniff*

    I'm a very sad Panda.

    Zombies/Nature

I have one of these at level 30! Man..oh man.. I'm really surprised at how effective a build it is. I've slotted the Zombies with -to hit to help out. They are pretty survivable... and the build really seems to shine on teams.

I haven't got to the second upgrade yet. But once the Zombies are able to heal themselves, this might be a really great combo. No complaints.

Sorry I'm not a numbers or "build" kinda guy.. but maybe someone more mathematically inclined than myself will have some insight. But so far I like it.... a lot.
  13. RiverOcean

    Illusion dom

Controllers have some of the most arguably game breaking power combos in game. An Illusion Dom, would never be anywhere as overpowered as a Plant/Anything controller or a Anything/Dark Affinity controller.

Oh yah.. plus Illusion, Rad, Earth, Mind, etc.... etc..

Controllers basically have quite a number of combos that are AMAZING. Letting Doms have access to illusion will never compare to that. So I hope we get it as a choice some day..

    Just my two cents...
  14. I'd go with a stalker... you can justify the "disappearing" as a mind control trick. But Stalkers strike me as the most "Vampire" like of the AT's in the came. The game doesn't really have "bite" attacks.. but hey you can't have everything.

An Arachnos Widow (Night Widow) build would be my second choice. I'm pretty sure you can skip the stealth.. you can also pick a mix of mental and melee powers. They survive well... IMHO.

A Dark/WP brute or a Mind/Dark Dominator would emulate the "Vampyri" NPC's in game.

I have a Vampire character who is a Necro/Poison MM... but I could see a Beast/Dark MM working out better as someone else suggested.. (A Beast MM with the Bat's aura.. would be hilarious...)
  15. Plant/Fire has always been one of the best combos. Even before dominators were adjusted in power level a few years ago.

With plant you've got access to immobilizes, slows, holds, and an AOE mass confuse. Not too mention a second "Stealth Pet" in Carrion Creepers.. that's actually quite capable of taking some of the aggro of of you.

Fire has no secondary effects, just damage..damage and more damage. And if I remember correctly Fiery Embrace just about doubles a Dominator's damage output.

So Plant/Fire is your basic "Root and Shoot" build.

    As far as concept..

My old Plant/Fire was a biological mutation who could emit a highly corrosive acid. And that was before power customization. So you could possibly color fire yellow or green.. and to go with that theme.

Good Luck.... and have fun. Plant/Fire is a great combo!
  16. RiverOcean

    Pets, just Pets.

Quite honestly.. you could roll an anything/trick Arrow or anything/Traps and pretty much have this concept.

Traps is all pets.. and full of powers you could easily skip. While Trick arrow is mostly just debuffs and also you could skip most of the powers in the set with no one blinking an eye. I actually like both Traps and TA because I hate buffing people. So were I do work this concept I'd go with one those sets..

Primary wise Demons and Robotics are the most self-sufficient sets.. that don't really require much outside buffing. Thugs/Traps could work if you took the leadership pool and Force Field Generator.

    ***Edit....

Crap I forgot Storm which is also full of additional pets and powers you could skip.. or just not slot and use much.

The only AT that even comes close to emulating Iron Man is a human only Peacebringer. Flight, Resistance Shields, and a mix of melee/ranged ability. You could probably use IO's and Incarnate abilities to shore up a blaster though.. but that's a considerable time/influence investment.

    * Uhoh.. preparing for flames.

To the OP, the Avengers need a controller more than anything else. I mean, did you SEE all those aliens just roaming around like it aint no thing? Some serious lockdown could've been used there.

    Alttitis Disease

All of my life I wanted to be a comic book artist! The problem... I can't draw. So my COH alts are a fun way to express my creativity.

This game has one of the best costume generators ever! Why limit yourself.. I have quite a few alts.. at various levels. Some I play often... others I just like to log-in and admire every now and then.

Everyone has a different definition of fun.. and there are a surprising amount of players who really love making new characters and costumes. It's also one of the reasons I like messing with the AE story generator!

Not everybody logs into create and play a toon to 50 and then IO + Incarnate them to godhood!
    1. They are ok overall. The set plays a little better, but that's mostly due to Singularity and Wormhole.. which isn't all that different than before. Propel and impact can be amusing on a Dom..but that's about it.
    2. Snooze! "Haunt and Possess" are visually striking and fun to use. "Shadow Field" offers to-hit debuff and a nice Hold. The rest of the set is 'ok'. But I think the powers designer(s) took the easy way out with the pet. There was a chance to do something cool with "Umbra Beast" and instead we got a big shadowy dog. It's not thematic at all...in my opinion.
    3. I like "Dark Assault"! I'm a fan of it in fact.. a self-heal on a Dom? Yes please! It won't save your hide from a lot of damage...but it's fun! Engulfing Darkness is comprable to Psychic Shockwave in "OMG I can't believe they let us have this"..kind of way. I especially like this set when combined with Mind Control or Plant!
    4. At the end of the day Paragon Studios is a business.. and to stay in business you got to give the people what they want. I would love more Dom centric powers, but I'm also a realist. We're a smaller portion of the player base.
    5. I seems like I see more Dom's than I used to. But I'm wondering if that's because of "COH Freedom" more than any revamps. Many of them Mind/ Doms.
    6. It's almost impossible NOT to contribute on an iTrial. Doms/Controllers seem very desired for the BAF. But again, I think this is more to do with nature of how well-balanced the iTrials are. Almost any AT can contribute something useful to them.
    7. I think it will. But my guess is Doms are gonna get a tweaked version. Which if handled the way "Darkness Affinity" was for controllers.. could be a good thing. The set might need to have some powers like "Group Invisibility" swapped out for something that benefits from Domination.
    8. Ice Control and Grav still need more help! The others sets really aren't that bad. I would also love to have an alternative to the "Umbra Beast" pet in Darkness Control!
    9. I would love a Gadget (Tech) Control set! Other sets I'd like to see: Magnetism, Weather (Air) control, and Radiation Control!

You know I look at Dark Affinity.. and just get confused. If Illusion would be overpowered on a Dom.. then Dark Affinity never should have made it to Controllers. (And lets not talk about Time Manipulation!)..
  20. Sorry if I'm not as coherent as I'd like to be here.. but this get's a thumbs up! The idea of a "natural" set that could work for a lot of concept builds intrigues me! I'd certainly play it... and possibly pair it with Robotics or Beam Rifle (AT depending)...
  21. Well I slotted the set in Blazing arrow.

    I kind of like it..

The damage and recharge on Blazing Arrow is noticeably better. It's now a nice spammable attack! The heal proc goes off enough to be useful and slightly amusing..

    Go HEALING ARROW!

    Thanks for the advice!

How often does it proc in blazing arrow.. I'm curious.
  23. So I lucked into 6 pieces of Defenders Bastion and I'm trying to figure out where to slot it in my TA/Archery defender.

I looked through some builds and see that a few people have placed it in "Oil Slick".. is there any reason for that?

Of course I've searched around and can't really find much. Anyone have suggestions on the best to slot this set for an Archery user? (* I love my sharp pointy sticks.. so help me out!!)
  24. People who've stayed subscribed with no payment issues should get something. That's a pretty amazing feat. I've been playing the game for five years, and had some lasped sub time.. So I may not get the reward. But I certainly won't begrudge people who do get it.

    They earned it.

But big hairy deal, if I don't. My sub lapsed and I let it go for awhile. So I probably won't qualify.

The whole point of a loyalty program is reward the folks that stuck it out with COH with no breaks in their payment history.

Not everyone is entitled to everything, just because you want it. That being said, I've been greedily eyeing that Statesman Chest Logo for years! If it's offered sometime later on the market..I'd be inclined to buy it! :-)
