Awesome, thanks for linking that. Interesting to finally see the origin of the Cryptic Studios name. I'd never seen that explained before.

"City of Heroes was very tightly focused on moment to moment combat," Rogers says. "The Marvel game will have more big components to it. It's going to be all the stuff we wanted to put into City of Heroes, and you'll get to run around in Marvel costumes. We've got more money now and more people. We'll add more depth. We want to take it to the next level."

Thats a bit disheartening for CoH players. We're the reason Cryptic has more money. The quote makes it sounds like the plan is, put all the awesome ideas we wanted to have in the old game into the new game.

"It's pretty much whack-a-mole," Rogers says of his role as a manager on days like these. "Everybody is running around wondering why Captain America's shield doesn't go up when he gets hit. But on a usual day, it's people at their desks with their heads down making stuff."
[/ QUOTE ]
Looks like MUO is getting our shield sets.
[/ QUOTE ]
Perhaps not, but likely. It could just be a costum costume piece for Captain America.

Anybody else wanna play Whack-a-mole right now?
[ QUOTE ]
And I seem to be the only one in the belief that a more direct sequel to City of Heroes will follow MUO.
[/ QUOTE ]
Nope, you're not the only one. People that are worried about Marvel are assuming that without Marvel being in the picture, Cryptic would be making City Of 2.0. However, nothing is to say that Cryptic would ever get funding for a sequel. It's quite possible that they would have just continued keeping City Of maintained until there were no longer enough players to support it.
Cryptic is getting a whole new development team with a brand new source of funding. This is good news. We should all be glad that Cryptic is growing as a company because that means they aren't going out of business any time soon. Sure, they will use lessons learned from City Of in developing the Marvel game. And it's certainly possible that people might leave City Of for MUO. But, nothing is to say City Of would last any longer even without MUO in the picture, and having MUO keeps Cryptic alive to, guess what, work on the sequel to City Of.
Of course, nothing is certain, but I believe that if Cryptic stays in business long enough, they will come out with a sequel to City Of. As others have pointed out, City Of is an original work of theirs; they aren't going to give up that universe easily. And, the sequel will benefit from lessons learned not just in City Of, but in MUO. Who knows, maybe by that time they will be big enough to be able to supply a steady stream of content in City Of 2.0 to satisfy even the most hardcore players. (Okay, that will never happen, but they might be able to get a lot closer to that goal.)

There were plans for an official expansion like WoW's Burning Crusade (as an example).
Instead they took the content for it and are putting it in the free Issues. 9 - 11 to be precise.
At this time crying about CoX dying is like saying who the next President is. It's WAY to early.
[/ QUOTE ]
Oh good to hear. That's smart of them.
I can't really call it "nice" of them like I was going to, because you know the reason they didn't do it is because I1-8 were free, and there'd be a huge uproar.
UNLESS they didn't plan on making you pay for it (which is unlikely because packaging costs money, hense why they stopped the free comic books).
In fact, I would have been livid if I'd have to pay for the issues -- BECAUSE they've all been free in the past.
Glad they kept the free issue idea going strong.
[/ QUOTE ]
There were gonna be tons of content in one paid expansion PLUS the free issues that are still coming. It would have been a good boost for new content if you ask me. New power sets for each AT, new Archetype, zones, etc. were gonna be in there, and I'm just saying, it would have been nice. Sure, all those things are coming in I9-I11, but hey, I'd prefer that we have a paid expansion and I10-I11. Call me selfish, but I just think it would have been a positive step. I'm not sure how it would have affected the game financially though, which was most likely the problem.
[/ QUOTE ]
That's actually a good point that I hadn't thought about before.
All in all, I'll just be satisfied if I9-I11 shapes up to be as good as they've been hyping it up to be. Free content or boxed content, as long as they can keep innovating this game, I can't complain too much.
My main concern, though, is that they cut the expansion, because they're too busy with other things, and we're actually losing out on the content. Those 3 Issues will have to be substantially bigger than what we're currently getting for Issues for the decision to be to our benefit. Of course, it's more than a year off before I11 is even announced, so nothing worth worrying about at this point. What they've revealed so far has been fairly promised. We're supposed to get 1 new powerset per archetype and, I believe, an epic archetype, nothing to sneeze at there.
One more thing to keep in mind.
Consider how many people that have come and gone. It isn't like the same 100,000+ people have been playing the whole time an no one new never comes. It is a steady flow in AND out of the game.
What if everyone that has gone decided to stay in a hero MMO? That is quite a few more players we would have. Plenty of fans for both games. If all goes in our favor all MUO will do is grab the fans that didn't like the play style of this game.
I doubt I will play MUO mainly because a huge portion of the player base will be xbox360 users. And the PC users are a very different sort then console users overall I would just rather avoid the clash.
And frankly I have invested almost 3 years into COH, it holds a special place for me. If and when I leave COH it will likely be the last MMO I play. Because if I was to leave it it woudl be that the MMO world had finally run its course for me.
I realize that both games are designed by the same developer so in fact Loyalty is sort of a none factor to some degree. But to me I still feel the pull of COH and it holds strongly.
Those that want to mix it up with the xbox 360 crowd I say have fun and enjoy just to me not my sort of thing.

To be fair, when Jack spoke at our conference, he was talking about hoping to get MUO out "in this decade." By that time, CoH will be over six years old- a good run for any MMO. CoH development started when? 2001-2002?
Don't be all doom and gloom here folks.

Seconded. Before WoW, the benchmark for MMP success was 100,000 subscribers. Admittedly, WoW is a HUGE hit. Gigantic. Perhaps biggest in the PC industry ever, but that shouldn't diminish CoH's place as one of the largest North American MMP's. We're well over that 100,000 mark.
There's no way that NCSoft and Cryptic are going to do anything but continue to give CoH everything we can. I'm still playing, designing and playtesting!
[/ QUOTE ]
That's good. You know, you got a lot of people who are NOT mmo players. I tried WoW after CoH, but quickly quit. (Actually, one major reason I left was the feeling I'd never "keep up" with the lewt - I hope I9 doesn't make me feel that way)
But anyhow, this game is pretty unique and has an amazing community.

I'd absolutely love to play a real mech based MMO (What I've seen of Exteel doesn't exactly do it for me), and if Cryptic did it, that'd just be a huge bonus. I'd love to see it so much, I really wouldn't care if it were Battletech, an original, Rifts (Though good luck getting the license for THAT), Robotech, hell, even one of the many other worlds that have been made already.
Now, I'd rather something new, but I'd take what I could get. Heck, I've been considering Exteel even though it's not my kind of game at all, just to get a giant robot fix.
As to the rest of it, I do hope that CoX sticks around for a long time. I suspect it will, though I think that MUO will hurt it pretty badly. Well, assuming Cryptic doesn't drop the ball with MUO and make something so bad that no one wants to play it. But while 5 years ago I'd agree that there weren't enough comic geeks to support more than one superhero game (Heck at that time, a lot of people thought CoH wouldn't make it because of the (then) superhero curse), these days Marvel in particular, and comics in general are actually more popular (mostly because of the movies that have been made). Well, maybe not popular, but more recognisable, and that's often enough. So, there's still hope.
And now, this has gotten far longer than I intended. Course, I'm not the one who has to suffer through the reading of it, so that's not so bad.
