Awesome, thanks for linking that. Interesting to finally see the origin of the Cryptic Studios name. I'd never seen that explained before.
Edit:

"City of Heroes was very tightly focused on moment to moment combat," Rogers says. "The Marvel game will have more big components to it. It's going to be all the stuff we wanted to put into City of Heroes, and you'll get to run around in Marvel costumes. We've got more money now and more people. We'll add more depth. We want to take it to the next level."
[/ QUOTE ]
Thats a bit disheartening for CoH players. We're the reason Cryptic has more money. The quote makes it sounds like the plan is, put all the awesome ideas we wanted to have in the old game into the new game.
[/ QUOTE ]
Guess who doesn't want to run around in "Marvel Costumes" aka spandex clad yuck!
::wails hand around::
Me!
I'll stick to CoX.
I really hope they don't start to skimp on CoX because they're pouring resources into this Marvel game.
It doesn't even sound that good, personally.

[ QUOTE ]
What I mean is that by making a game engine you are defining the world, and when you define a world you inherntly block stuff off.
What that stement ment was they wanted to put stuff into that game that the CoH engine wouldn't be able to support without another major rewriting of the engine ( ie an expansion ).
[/ QUOTE ]
EXACTLY ... But what that really says, is that they weren't thinking far enough into the future when they designed the engine ... I mean they said it right here:
It's going to be all the stuff we wanted to put into City of Heroes, and you'll get to run around in Marvel costumes. We've got more money now and more people. We'll add more depth. We want to take it to the next level."
They wanted it to go into CoH ... But between limitations of design and resourses, they couldn't do it ... Now that they have money (from us), they're gonna make the game that CoH was supposed to (they wanted it to) be.
They said it themselves.
[ QUOTE ]
The people who say this game is going to be dying over the next few years are fooling themselves into thinking pesemisticly.
I know the game won't last forver but we're still fine and will be for a long time.
[/ QUOTE ]
This game is gonna bite it the minute MUO is determined to be a success (if it is a success) ... If MUO flops, the CoH/V will still survive.
There aren't enough Super Hero/Comic Book MMO Players out there to support TWO MMOs.
[/ QUOTE ]
This happens all the time with game devlopers. When ever they get to create a second game, they usually try to put in all the features they didn't get to see work the first time around. This desire isn't new.
Guarenteed, they will want to put things into the Marvel MMO that may never get to implent even throughout the course of its existence.
[ QUOTE ]
Oh - and I'd love to do a giant mech game. Love it.
[/ QUOTE ]
I'm kind of surprised there isn't an MMO based on 'mechs yet. An entire genre of anime is based on giant mechs - I'd think there'd be a huge market for a Battletech, Robotech, or other 'mech-based MMO...
I just get this feeling that CoX is going to still be the better game.
As long as Cryptic sticks with it.
I just don't really see how appealing it is to be a "corny" superhero like Marvel makes.
"Corny" meaning spandex and blah blah blah.
Unless they give you a character creation system that's just like City of X.
The thing that keeps me playing this is making characters that are based around Anime or other media because that's exactly what you can do with the awesome character creation system in CoX.
Overall, I want to hear Statesman say "Cryptic is going to put in as much, if not more effort into CoX although we're making and running MUO."
I doubt we'll see that though. It's just going to become "keep up maintanence" isn't it? Maybe make an issue once every year and a half.
I'm really disheartened.
I wont be shocked if some bigtime cool stuff is in the works for COX. Jacks good at keeping it quiet till we least expect it. Just wait and see.

I hope so, because I just got a friend to quit WoW and play CoH, and I'd really have to kick myself if this game is going to basically become maintanence in the next year.
In fact (though this will change), I'm not even in the mood to make my new character.
It's like that artical threw a javelin right through my heart... regardless of what Statesman says.

Rick and I came up with Crypteia since we'd both worked on Cryptozoology first. We were trying to come up with names based on the "crypt-" part...

Krypteia was also the name of the "secret police" of Sparta, that kept the slave workers in line.

Which they mention in the article this thread is about.
Heroes
Dysmal
Lumynous
Sam Steele
Pluck
Wile
Slagheap
Pressure Wave
Rhiannon Bel
Verified
Stellaric
Syd Mallorn
Villains
Jotunheim Skald
Saer Maen
Jen Corbae
Illuminance
Venator Arawn
Taiga Dryad
Tarranos
This is a very interesting read, especially to read about the history of Cryptic. And once again they mention playing Warhammer 40,000, woot!
And I seem to be the only one in the belief that a more direct sequel to City of Heroes will follow MUO.
I hope for a CoH 2 some day.

Excuse to quit? I love this game! That's why it hurts.
I just came back to the game after leaving WoW. I've been telling all kinds of people to play CoX because it's a better game.
I'm just saying that I really love this game, and I'm going to be heartbroken if I start to see signs that Cryptic caring more about their new game than CoX (in the form of lacking content).
And what do you mean retail boxes? Does than mean it's an expansion we're actually going to have to go to the store and pay for?
The idea of "retail boxes" really threw me off. And why would they be in boxes starting now? Instead of the usual downloads?
I was really disheartened too when I read that.
I feel better now that I've read what Jack has said.
I will be with CoH/X/whatever till it goes grey.
I have no interest in playing someone else's Wolverine or whatever else is in that universe.
I like playing my characters in their world.
States, if you are still lurking, could we have a State(sman) of the Union address sometime?
Questions about the game, either side? /t @Neuronia or @Neuronium, with your queries!
168760: A Death in the Gish. 3 missions, 1-14. Easy to solo.
Infinity Villains
Champion, Pinnacle, Virtue Heroes

Exactly how I feel. I think CoX is going to be more fun than running around with either premade Marvel characters, or heroes that are conformed to Marvel standards.
There were plans for an official expansion like WoW's Burning Crusade (as an example).
Instead they took the content for it and are putting it in the free Issues. 9 - 11 to be precise.
At this time crying about CoX dying is like saying who the next President is. It's WAY to early.

Oh good to hear. That's smart of them.
I can't really call it "nice" of them like I was going to, because you know the reason they didn't do it is because I1-8 were free, and there'd be a huge uproar.
UNLESS they didn't plan on making you pay for it (which is unlikely because packaging costs money, hense why they stopped the free comic books).
In fact, I would have been livid if I'd have to pay for the issues -- BECAUSE they've all been free in the past.
Glad they kept the free issue idea going strong.

Jack has said before all is good with COX. How many more times do you people gotta hear it? Geezuz.
[/ QUOTE ]
With all respect to Jack, we all know he's going to say that. As a public representative of Cryptic and CoH, theres nothing else he can say, especially on boards owned and operated by their business partners.
To say anything besides "we're going to continue to support CoH just as much as in the past" would be the equivalent of jumping in front of a bus. It would open him up to all sorts of attacks from board posters, and raise questions with Cryptic's business partners, as well as potentially affecting people's decisions on whether or not to keep subscribing.
Thats not to say that its not true, but like a politician, Jack is constrained in what he can and cannot say.
[/ QUOTE ]
Not just that, but time passes and things change. And that's good. But you can't seriously believe that any company has the same outlook a year later. Any company. Times change, the economy changes, the field that company is in changes. It's not unreasonable to ask about those changes.
And to be perfectly honest, I'm actually a little relieved what with States, Posi and the rest posting so much all of a sudden. I like it when they're vocal with us. So sue me.
[/ QUOTE ]
I prefer to see them posting here too. That's one of my larger issues ... That they've lost touch. If they're here, then they are in touch ... Whether it means anything is a different matter altogether, but at least we know it's not completely unheard.
But ... This little progression of posts reminded me of something.
Just a month before Enron went down the toilet, they were painting pretty rosey pictures of the future too

There were gonna be tons of content in one paid expansion PLUS the free issues that are still coming. It would have been a good boost for new content if you ask me. New power sets for each AT, new Archetype, zones, etc. were gonna be in there, and I'm just saying, it would have been nice. Sure, all those things are coming in I9-I11, but hey, I'd prefer that we have a paid expansion and I10-I11. Call me selfish, but I just think it would have been a positive step. I'm not sure how it would have affected the game financially though, which was most likely the problem.

And who plays PS3?
But yes, the DC MMO is gonna be developed by Sony Online.
From reading that article yesterday I got the feeling that marvel universe will take over coh and that a lot of us are gonna end up in that universe. rather then coh, since there is much more history, in that universe, and some of the greatest characters of comic history will be there.
But I was sadden by that fact that they will add things that they wanted to add to coh but couldn't, mostly because of budget reasons, I think and maybe also from what they learned from cohs engine limits.
Jack,
First of all it is really great to see a couple of posts from you.
These boards have been without your posts for far too long.
I enjoyed that article, but there is one thing at the end, which I find a red flag being raised about.
It mentions that Cryptic is going to put into MUO all the things they wanted to put into CoH.
[ QUOTE ]

[/ QUOTE ]
Is this hightlighted part really just a blurb in an article, or is there some deeper truth to it. If CoH is still enjoying Cryptic's full support, then why is MUO going to be all the stuff you wanted to put in CoH. What is left for CoH if MUO will have it all?
I love CoH and play it very often, would not like to hear that CoH will not continue to get all it should or could have.

Well, as long as they give us everything that would have been in that "expansion" via issues 9-11, then I'm giddy. I don't mind if we have to get it over time instead of all at once.
But if they removed planned content because they were making it now "free", I'll be a sad panda.

I figure I'd chime in here, because I think people are reading far, far more into it than "we are doing neat things in MUO than we could do in CoH".
I think he was just saying that there are limitations in any game engine when you are making it. If you have more funding/tools when you start, you can do more things.
Not that they don't want to do some of these things or might try to cram them into CoH later.
The most important part of a project is your foundation.
Still here, even after all this time!
