It's difficult to not be disheartened after reading that.

I disagree that there aren't enough people to play CoH and MUO. People could have ( and probably did ) made the same arguments about all the fantasy based games, probably even WoW.

Errr, ok.

I don't think I had said that though. Didn't intend to if that's what I typed.

I think Marvel will probably have advanced them a dollar or two, actually.

They wanted it to go into CoH ... But between limitations of design and resourses, they couldn't do it ... Now that they have money (from us), they're gonna make the game that CoH was supposed to (they wanted it to) be.

They said it themselves.

Umm, I don't feel like Westwood withheld things and ripped me off with Command and Conquer 1 even though Command and Conquer 3 looks like it's going to be just a little better then C&C 1 was.

There's such a big multi-year gap in the release dates (looks to be 5 years between CoH and MUO) that I really don't feel like product 1 was rushed out the door simply to get dollars to fund product 2.

[/ QUOTE ]

The difference between C&C and C&C 3 is..., they are the same franchise. If Cryptic would have said CoH 2.0 is going to be everything we wanted to have in CoH; I dont think many would complain too much.

Personally, I'm going to stand back and watch MUO for a while before I make any choices on it. I'm pretty wary of online games that have a big name attached to it. World of Warcraft and Final Fantasy XI are good examples.

When you're building on an already-existing universe, you really only have so much room to work with - because if you go too far out of bounds, you're going to irk the people that are there just because of that namesake. And that's usually a substantial number of people.

I like CoX so much because it's almost entirely fresh. I don't know about everyone else, but I'd feel rather odd fighting alongside popular comic-book characters online - or even as them. I don't know how they plan on doing MUO so far as character creation, storyline, and all that - but the name, Marvel Universe Online, implies something solidly based within Marvel, and so I'd like to see how much freedom/flexibility there is in the finished product on the players' part before I go leaping over anywhere.

That said, I don't think CoX is done yet. The devs have talked in the past about all these big changes coming up - storylines, Inventions, and whatnot - that give me the impression that CoX hasn't even reached it's design goal yet. The impression that we havn't even hit the height of the game yet (Unless you're one of the ED Naysayers who believe the game died when ED hit, I s'pose).

I could be wrong, of course, but that's what I'm hoping. If CoX fades away, it fades away, but you can bet this gal, at least, will be squeezing her subscription for every second of fun it's worth.

I'm hopeful that Cryptic will give preferential beta access to CoH players. It seems likely, so perhaps we'll all get to see what its like in MUO Beta.

Yes.. give us oldies that have been around since before cryptic had a publisher primo beta access.... Or well.. atleast let us in a week or two before the open beta...

On first glance i feelt down then again it takes alot for a MMO to be pulled... (unless EA runs it.. I want MCO back goddammit....) In three years time we might have a truckload of stuff in that we at this stage can not begin to envision.. And if it goes belly up... i'l just truck on to the next one... as i always have done.

I'd certainly give it a try if so. Though, being a next-gen game, I may have to pass due to possible hardware requirements.

Awesome, thanks for linking that. Interesting to finally see the origin of the Cryptic Studios name. I'd never seen that explained before.

Edit:

[ QUOTE ]

"City of Heroes was very tightly focused on moment to moment combat," Rogers says. "The Marvel game will have more big components to it. It's going to be all the stuff we wanted to put into City of Heroes, and you'll get to run around in Marvel costumes. We've got more money now and more people. We'll add more depth. We want to take it to the next level."

[/ QUOTE ]

Thats a bit disheartening for CoH players. We're the reason Cryptic has more money. The quote makes it sounds like the plan is, put all the awesome ideas we wanted to have in the old game into the new game.

[/ QUOTE ]
That isn't the least bit surprising though. Who didn't see this coming?

*crosses fingers for the most awesome ocean powers*

Still, 2008's a long ways away. CoH can still pull something off.. probably.

Yes, I agree completely that they are not the same franchise (at the moment ... joking!)

The central point was that product 1 was not a rip off to the purchaser in order to fund product 2 (which would then be done in the way the devs really had wanted)

If you prefer, the example could be Bioware creating Baulder’s Gate and then going on to create Knights of the Old Republic.

I can’t speak for all fans of Baulder’s Gate, but I don’t believe there either that I paid for a rushed hurried product devoid functionality Bioware had wanted to put in, only to fund the creation of Knights of the Old Republic made the way they had wanted to.

We’re not exactly playing Daikatana here.

That would be freaking sweeeeeeeeeeet. I am so hopeful and excited about MUO. The devs have shown us how much they have learned with things like the new Faultline and how powers are slowly being better balanced.

I don't get all the fear-mongering that CoX is doomed. That's not liable to happen. Sure, I doubt there will be as many of us, but doomed? Pfff. Then Ultima Online, Everquest 1, and all those other ancient games never should have lasted as long as they did/have/are. Actually, it seems once an MMO has really established itself and settled in, like CoX has, it just doesn't one day on the way to the proverbial fridge have a heart attack and die.

Yes, I'm still around...

NCSoft (the publisher) and Cryptic Studios (the developer) are still firmly behind City of Heroes. It isn't going anywhere. NCSoft continues to fund a fantastic live team with lots of great stuff to come.

Yes, Cryptic is working on other products. These are different games with different financial backers. We plan on supporting multiple games in the same way that other great developers do.

This game is gonna bite it the minute MUO is determined to be a success (if it is a success) ... If MUO flops, the CoH/V will still survive.

[/ QUOTE ]

I'll be cancelling my CoX account if MUO is any good. I can say that with 100% certainty.

[/ QUOTE ]

Ditto. There's no question in my mind. But the devs had better well had learned their lessons well from CoX. If I see something like ED again, I'll be happy to go into the arms of SOE. (No I didn't play SWG, nor do I care about NGE).

The City of Heroes Community is a special one and I will always look fondly on my times arguing, discussing and playing with you all. Thanks and thanks to the developers for a special experience.

I think this is what worries some people as well, though. (Myself included.) I don't think the fear is so much that City of Heroes/Villains is going to fade away into nothingness with the release of MUO as it is simply that the franchise isn't going to go any further from that point.

I've seen enough posts stating that Co* is a niche and we like it that way. My concern is that we are so niche we won't stay profitable for ya'll or that ya'll will attempt to add more mainstream junk and take us out of our niche.

Seems that we are in a precarious position. Maybe I'm wrong, I hope I am. CoH was my first MMO, ya'll dragged me out of the dark ages of solitaire and other crap. Maybe I've just got a wee bit too much loyalty to one title in what looks more and more like a fast paced market.

Posted

I don't think we're as much of a niche as people like to think.
