I don't even understand what this means. Is this just another way of saying "Spider-man and Hulk clones for everyone", or does it mean "tights and Kirby discs"? Either way, I don't know if I'd count that as a point in MUO's favor.

It still seems disingenous to produce a product that is actively in competition with another of your own products, but I really don't see support for CoX drying up. As near as I can tell, the two games will have their own separate teams for the most part, so the important part - having people working on and updating CoX - is secured.

There aren't enough Super Hero/Comic Book MMO Players out there to support TWO MMOs.

[/ QUOTE ]

Let alone THREE titles. Right, DC / Sony?

[/ QUOTE ]

On the other hand, three years ago, who would have thought there were 6 million or whatever people out there interested in playing a fantasy MMO?

The analysis on MMORPGchart.com raises an interesting point. MMOs are dominated by the Fantasy genre (96% or something), while on Television, Sci Fi is far, far, more common than Fantasy of the Swords and Sorcery type. Whose not to say that there isn't a huge market out there for a really good Sci Fi or Super Hero MMO if the game is good enough to get its hooks into the non-gamer market the way WoW has?

Jack,
First of all it is really great to see a couple of posts from you.
These boards have been without your posts for far too long.

I enjoyed that article, but there is one thing at the end, which I find a red flag being raised about.
It mentions that Cryptic is going to put into MUO all the things they wanted to put into CoH.

[ QUOTE ]
"City of Heroes was very tightly focused on moment to moment combat," Rogers says. "The Marvel game will have more big components to it. It' It's going to be all the stuff we wanted to put into City of Heroes and you'll get to run around in Marvel costumes. We've got more money now and more people. We'll add more depth. We want to take it to the next level."

[/ QUOTE ]

Is this hightlighted part really just a blurb in an article, or is there some deeper truth to it. If CoH is still enjoying Cryptic's full support, then why is MUO going to be all the stuff you wanted to put in CoH. What is left for CoH if MUO will have it all?

I love CoH and play it very often, would not like to hear that CoH will not continue to get all it should or could have.

That's the exact premise these 3 pages are based on. We're worried MOU will get most of the attention now, and whatever content that would have gone to CoH is going to get skimped on, and have more time focused for MUO, so CoX won't be what it could have been.

But Jack is getting at the fact that Marvel is going to have a much larger team because now they have more money, leaving CoX's team much smaller.

Thats not necessarily true. Read the article again, note how they've expanded the staff so much that they're moving into a new building.

...and have plenty more to whine about with the new one.

Hopefully, Marvel will realise that one of the biggest strengths of CoX is the sheer variety of costumes and powers available, and limiting those= BAD idea.

I had my doubts already, but if they did make that mistake, I probably wouldn't play it.

Otherwise, I probably would. I'd try it out at least. I wouldn't mind fighting against or alongside some famous heroes/villains, if it was in a decent game.

And I think that City of Heroes signature characters should at least make a cameo. Portal Corp is the ultimate plot device.

I forgot when. But it was either Statesman or Positron that said "the current coh team size is the same as when it launched". Not the exact words but something along those lines.

I hope they have expanded the coh team since this was said.

I wonder how long CoX will last after MUO starts. Only time will tell...

[/ QUOTE ]

Depends.

Apparently it is only for Windows Vista. Not only is the operating system itself going to limit access, the hardware requirements will probably be much higher than CoH/V.

That is only what is obvious. There are various unknowns.. that will remain so till we can actually play the game. Is the game still casual? That is one of the big things about CoH. It is a CASUAL MMORPG. That is a big strength. Those that normally would never lay down money for a MMO will do so for CoH. Then... well.. will we really enjoy being trapped in a marvel story? It isn't like CoH. It is unique.. anything can happen here. The devs can do what they want with the story because it is THEIR story.

CoH isn't dead yet.

Hey, Marvel's taken PLENTY of liberties with their storylines...

I doubt the game will or can be a direct adaptation of Marvel at all. They're re-created the characters of it so many times now, it doesn't matter.

Well.. the point wasn't to make prediction on faults. It was that CoH might offer a completely different experience from MUO. CoH isn't dead yet. There are so many things that we all love CoH for that MUO might miss the mark COMPLETELY on.

It seems unlikelly to me. I dunno how their contract go but I would expect NCsoft to have secured the right for the Co* signature characters, because they had the money and were essencially in posiiton of power at that time. But I could be wrong and maybe one of our lovelly devs could correct me on this.
In this case I wouldn't expect them to agree on anybody using thier character, even so briefly, in a product concurent of their own.

Now if Cryptic put a Easter egg / parody character (Statesbaby; Ms Libertarian...), they would be safe. In fact, I am expecting them to do just so .

I'm feeling less worried overall now.

I'm beginning to think that CoX and MUO are each going to cater to a different audience. I don't think it's going to be the COX2 that we're worried about.

Everyone is thinking that it's going to be like the EQ2 to EQ1 -- a game that encompasses everything the first one did, plus adding more.

I don't think that'll be the case. I think they're going to be two completely different games, catering to different audiences for the most part.

Regardless we have a year before we need to worry about it, and a year is quite a while to see how things shape up.

Eat, Drink, Be Merry until then, I say.

Agreed, CoX isn't even dying. We have a lot of stuff coming up.

I think it'll be totally different from MUO. I mean, it would be kind of silly of Cryptic to make a game that would totally beat CoX in every way (gameplay-wise).

Yes yes!

Exactly what I mean!

Just because they are both about super heroes doesn't mean they will be the same game! I wouldn't be surprised if a few people saying they are going to play MUO try it.. find out they hate it.. then come back.

Same thing with the fantasy MMOs. They can all co-exist because they offer different experiences.

Right, I mean it was mentioned earlier.... if they were basically making MUO as a "CoX2" then they'd be stepping on their own toes. Cryptic is by no means stupid, so I'm sure it's going to be a totally different experience, but remain in the Super Hero genre.

See The Elder Scroll IV: Oblivion vs. a Modern Diablo (Bad example, but you see what I mean -- same genre, totally different gameplay [ignore that one lacks multiplayer]).

In fact, it'd be SMART to make the games have 2 different audiences because they'd expand even more upon their current fanbase -- keeping everyone who likes CoX playing CoX, and the people who would prefer MUO's gamepaly, playing MUO -- twice the people as opposed to moving people from one game to the other.
