I'm starting to wonder... isn't it VASTLY possible that the devs are allowed to log on as states, just to keep up his appearances?
I sometimes wonder if that's really Jack at all anymore.
Maybe he reads the forums everyday, but he sure doesn't read his PMs everyday. ::looks hard at Jack::

Obviously there's a whole load of Statesman robot doubles, and this was one of them replying.
Like with Superboy and Smallville.

You're all much better at this than I am, so... I was wondering if it wasn't too much to ask, can anyone resize this for me please?
I need it to fit the crappy 80x80 pixels these forums force on us :/
As you can see, I'm using it right now, but it's all bleh because it was resized by these horrid forum guidelines -

An elegant synopsis. I think I'm going to have to go find this article. However, I doubt Jack will be reading this, which is a shame.

*ahem* I read the boards every day!
[/ QUOTE ]
I doubt it... I'll bet someone lets him know when comments like this come up just so he can slip in, pretend he's following along, and then slip away again to do whatever it is he does when he pretends to be too busy to answer serious questions.
[/ QUOTE ]Or like I suggested, a trusted developer like Positron is allowed to log in as him and post ambiguously when threads like this appear... -

Everquest didn't have mounts or teleporters until years after the game was released.

Being that they will be console games first, and PC adaptations second
[/ QUOTE ]
Speculation or known-fact?
[/ QUOTE ]
It's general knowledge that since PCs are (generally) superior gaming machines, if a game is planned to be both on a console and computer that it's made first for the console, then adapted.
I can't think of a single multiplatform game where this doesn't hold true. -
[ QUOTE ]
No idea what will become of the current model at that point. But both will be supported.

Ahhhh am I going to have to go buy a new 360 so I can be 1337, now?

I have a feeling Powers like Stretching, Climbing, Swinging, Shield throwing, Shapechanging will not likely ever be in CoX though they will probably be in the Marvel Universe MMO. I'm also pretty sure, that the Marvel Universe MMO will also have ponies and pie.
[/ QUOTE ]
And keeeeeeping in mind that this game is going to be on the console.
I mean come on. It's probably going to look good but it's on a console.
The game just ISN'T going to be as BIG as CoX. I don't think they'll get the cool character customization that we have because its ON A CONSOLE.
It's going to look pretty, like every game on the 360, but lack the depth just like the rest of the 360 games.
[/ QUOTE ]
you havent been paying attention, one its going to be on a 360 AND the PC (see Games for windows initiative)
2 360 is a dumbed down PC (in otherwords games upgradeable like a PC MMO just none of the apps you'd get on a PC other than gaming) so please all you PCONLYUNEWBS folks you're arguments went out LAST gen
welcome to the next gen, may the gaming gods save you all, should they see a need to
[/ QUOTE ]
I have been paying attention, but do you know how they work this?
The computer can handle anything. The console can handle only so much -- so they build the game around the console then adapt it to the computer. So essentially, you have to look at the fact that it's a CONSOLE game, being adapted to the computer also -- not the other way around.
The consoles, regardless of if they're "next gen" still cannot handle as much as a computer -- they don't have the hardrive space. Not to mention, not all 360 users OWN a hardrive -- there is a core system out there.
I have a 360 myself -- I am in the next generation. I play Gears of War frequently with friends.
But, just because it has prettier graphics, doesn't do much for the memory availability -- how much memory does CoH/CoV take up right now on your computer, with the updates?
I'm asking because I'm not sure myself, but I know the hardrive for the 360 has 20 gigs of drive space minus the memory taken up for the 360's system files which already take up room.
I don't beleive MUO is going to want to take up more than 1/2 of a users hardrive with updates... so that leaves... what about 8 gigabytes for updating space?
Console games DO NOT match computer games on a depth level.
And this IS going to be a console game adapted to a PC game -- that's what they do. -

Hey Iodine, while your points are valid, I would like to point out that it only takes one success to become a HUGE success. It's worth the effort to make console MMOs because if they get it right then just about every console in the country will play it. ( Of course I'm exadurating but you get the point )
[/ QUOTE ]
It may be a success, but the console crowd are pretty much my enemies -- since I'm a roleplayer on Virtue.
Sure, I like consoles. The people ON consoles are good for games like Halo, and FPSs... but I wouldn't want to play an MMO with them.
Generally, people that play console games tend to be about... under the age of 14. I'm not by any means saying that there aren't people older playing on them. I still play Halo and Saints Row on my console. And it's great for that.
But an MMO on a console? Ew. I mean, did you ever play Halo? Did you EVER listen to 90% of the people on there? Nothing but high pitched voices, cussing, and little kids who have some kind of power complex.
MMOs are no good for cross platforming.
I really can't imagine MUO doing that well. Sure it might sell a bajillionfofillion copies quickly, but it will lose players just as quick, I think. -

Tell me, how many console gamers use keyboards to chat with their PC counterparts in an MMO? Whoops ... not many, huh? Nothing like trying to grow a community of superhero mutes. This is only ONE challenge in many to come because some propeller-head, bean counter decided to merge console gamers with PC gamers in an MMO.
[/ QUOTE ]
*sigh* And I think CoH is too quiet as it is now (not counting AP, and even then that zone is at times). Teams are quiet, with sometimes "GJ", "over there", "<buff> plz", messages, all of which can be pointed to and clicked on.

I don't think that'll be the case. I think they're going to be two completely different games, catering to different audiences for the most part.
[/ QUOTE ]
One can only hope.
[/ QUOTE ]
Right, I mean it was mentioned earlier.... if they were basically making MUO as a "CoX2" then they'd be stepping on their own toes. Cryptic is by no means stupid, so I'm sure it's going to be a totally different experience, but remain in the Super Hero genre.
See The Elder Scroll IV: Oblivion vs. a Modern Diablo (Bad example, but you see what I mean -- same genre, totally different gameplay [ignore that one lacks multiplayer]).
In fact, it'd be SMART to make the games have 2 different audiences because they'd expand even more upon their current fanbase -- keeping everyone who likes CoX playing CoX, and the people who would prefer MUO's gamepaly, playing MUO -- twice the people as opposed to moving people from one game to the other. -

Anyone remember when jack said , there's some big surprises for COX in 2007. My bet it's somthing cool.
[/ QUOTE ]
Agreed, CoX isn't even dying. We have a lot of stuff coming up.
I think it'll be totally different from MUO. I mean, it would be kind of silly of Cryptic to make a game that would totally beat CoX in every way (gameplay-wise). -

I wonder how long CoX will last after MUO starts. Only time will tell...
[/ QUOTE ]
Depends.
Apparently it is only for Windows Vista. Not only is the operating system itself going to limit access, the hardware requirements will probably be much higher than CoH/V.
That is only what is obvious. There are various unknowns.. that will remain so till we can actually play the game. Is the game still casual? That is one of the big things about CoH. It is a CASUAL MMORPG. That is a big strength. Those that normally would never lay down money for a MMO will do so for CoH. Then... well.. will we really enjoy being trapped in a marvel story? It isn't like CoH. It is unique.. anything can happen here. The devs can do what they want with the story because it is THEIR story.
CoH isn't dead yet.
[/ QUOTE ]
Hey, Marvel's taken PLENTY of liberties with their storylines...
I doubt the game will or can be a direct adaptation of Marvel at all. They're re-created the characters of it so many times now, it doesn't matter.
[/ QUOTE ]
I'm feeling less worried overall now.
I'm beginning to think that CoX and MUO are each going to cater to a different audience. I don't think it's going to be the COX2 that we're worried about.
Everyone is thinking that it's going to be like the EQ2 to EQ1 -- a game that encompasses everything the first one did, plus adding more.
I don't think that'll be the case. I think they're going to be two completely different games, catering to different audiences for the most part.
Regardless we have a year before we need to worry about it, and a year is quite a while to see how things shape up.
Eat, Drink, Be Merry until then, I say. -

and you'll get to run around in Marvel costumes
[/ QUOTE ]
I don't even understand what this means. Is this just another way of saying "Spider-man and Hulk clones for everyone", or does it mean "tights and Kirby discs"? Either way, I don't know if I'd count that as a point in MUO's favor.
It still seems disingenous to produce a product that is actively in competition with another of your own products, but I really don't see support for CoX drying up. As near as I can tell, the two games will have their own separate teams for the most part, so the important part - having people working on and updating CoX - is secured.
[/ QUOTE ]
But Jack is getting at the fact that Marvel is going to have a much larger team because now they have more money, leaving CoX's team much smaller. -
[ QUOTE ]
Jack,
First of all it is really great to see a couple of posts from you.
These boards have been without your posts for far too long.
I enjoyed that article, but there is one thing at the end, which I find a red flag being raised about.
It mentions that Cryptic is going to put into MUO all the things they wanted to put into CoH.
[ QUOTE ]
"City of Heroes was very tightly focused on moment to moment combat," Rogers says. "The Marvel game will have more big components to it. It' It's going to be all the stuff we wanted to put into City of Heroes and you'll get to run around in Marvel costumes. We've got more money now and more people. We'll add more depth. We want to take it to the next level."
[/ QUOTE ]
Is this hightlighted part really just a blurb in an article, or is there some deeper truth to it. If CoH is still enjoying Cryptic's full support, then why is MUO going to be all the stuff you wanted to put in CoH. What is left for CoH if MUO will have it all?
I love CoH and play it very often, would not like to hear that CoH will not continue to get all it should or could have.

[/ QUOTE ]
That's the exact premise these 3 pages are based on. We're worried MOU will get most of the attention now, and whatever content that would have gone to CoH is going to get skimped on, and have more time focused for MUO, so CoX won't be what it could have been. -

There were plans for an official expansion like WoW's Burning Crusade (as an example).
Instead they took the content for it and are putting it in the free Issues. 9 - 11 to be precise.
At this time crying about CoX dying is like saying who the next President is. It's WAY to early.
[/ QUOTE ]
Oh good to hear. That's smart of them.
I can't really call it "nice" of them like I was going to, because you know the reason they didn't do it is because I1-8 were free, and there'd be a huge uproar.
UNLESS they didn't plan on making you pay for it (which is unlikely because packaging costs money, hense why they stopped the free comic books).
In fact, I would have been livid if I'd have to pay for the issues -- BECAUSE they've all been free in the past.
Glad they kept the free issue idea going strong.
[/ QUOTE ]
There were gonna be tons of content in one paid expansion PLUS the free issues that are still coming. It would have been a good boost for new content if you ask me. New power sets for each AT, new Archetype, zones, etc. were gonna be in there, and I'm just saying, it would have been nice. Sure, all those things are coming in I9-I11, but hey, I'd prefer that we have a paid expansion and I10-I11. Call me selfish, but I just think it would have been a positive step. I'm not sure how it would have affected the game financially though, which was most likely the problem.
[/ QUOTE ]
Well, as long as they give us everything that would have been in that "expansion" via issues 9-11, then I'm giddy. I don't mind if we have to get it over time instead of all at once.
But if they removed planned content because they were making it now "free", I'll be a sad panda. -

I was really disheartened too when I read that.
I feel better now that I've read what Jack has said.
I will be with CoH/X/whatever till it goes grey.
I have no interest in playing someone else's Wolverine or whatever else is in that universe.
I like playing my characters in their world.
States, if you are still lurking, could we have a State(sman) of the Union address sometime?

Exactly how I feel. I think CoX is going to be more fun than running around with either premade Marvel characters, or heroes that are conformed to Marvel standards. -

I wont be shocked if some bigtime cool stuff is in the works for COX. Jacks good at keeping it quiet till we least expect it. Just wait and see.
[/ QUOTE ]
I hope so, because I just got a friend to quit WoW and play CoH, and I'd really have to kick myself if this game is going to basically become maintanence in the next year.
In fact (though this will change), I'm not even in the mood to make my new character.
It's like that artical threw a javelin right through my heart... regardless of what Statesman says.
[/ QUOTE ]
My god. How can you be this upset by it? It sounds like you are looking for an excuse to quit. The game still has through I11 planned. I9 through 11 was going to be a retail box for crying out loud.
[/ QUOTE ]
Excuse to quit? I love this game! That's why it hurts.
I just came back to the game after leaving WoW. I've been telling all kinds of people to play CoX because it's a better game.
I'm just saying that I really love this game, and I'm going to be heartbroken if I start to see signs that Cryptic caring more about their new game than CoX (in the form of lacking content).
And what do you mean retail boxes? Does than mean it's an expansion we're actually going to have to go to the store and pay for?
The idea of "retail boxes" really threw me off. And why would they be in boxes starting now? Instead of the usual downloads?
