Cryptic article.

Kaktos posted a portion of this in the Marvel thread but it has some insight into the founding of cryptic and such, figured I'd point it out to people who don't frequent the comics forum.

Awesome, thanks for linking that. Interesting to finally see the origin of the Cryptic Studios name. I'd never seen that explained before.

Edit:

"City of Heroes was very tightly focused on moment to moment combat," Rogers says. "The Marvel game will have more big components to it. It's going to be all the stuff we wanted to put into City of Heroes, and you'll get to run around in Marvel costumes. We've got more money now and more people. We'll add more depth. We want to take it to the next level."

[/ QUOTE ]

Thats a bit disheartening for CoH players. We're the reason Cryptic has more money. The quote makes it sounds like the plan is, put all the awesome ideas we wanted to have in the old game into the new game.

Anyone who doesn't think that CoH is going to be the forgotten step-child of Cryptic now that they have the Marvel license is just fooling themselves. The game will linger on, but there will be a steady dwindling of features and support and within 1 - 2 years this game will essentially be in "maintenance-only" mode.

Not that that's terrible, after all, 5 - 6 years of decent support is more than a lot of computer games get.

I'm sure there will be plenty of cool things coming out for CoH/CoV in the next few updates, but I just wonder about all the cool things we heard about from the early pre-Beta days....

I sincerly hope not, but that's a dim hope after reading that article. They're growing so fast.

Hmm, that's rather interesting.

I had heard previously (I think on these boards a long long time ago) that Jack Emmert was brought in after the initial work had started and gone a bit... pear shaped. But apparently he was part of the founding team.

And the problem with that is, unless this has changed, the last mention of it said that it would be Xbox 360 or Vista only. Which pretty much means I won't be going for it at all.

Lewis says, "The online communities that form around the kinds of game we make are a microcosm of the world at large, but they also have very unique personalities, and we're [u]getting better at understanding them[u] and what they need to thrive. So we'll be making more [u]thoughtfully designed games[u], and games with more social awareness. [u]Ultimately, though, games are about having fun[u], and we won't forget that."

[/ QUOTE ]

All I gotta say is ... Don't forget this game in that mindset please.

We still have nearly two years (most likely end of 08 for MUO) to go ... And if you don't get some of that back into this game ... You'll have bitten the hands that have fed your success.

And don't forget that a substantial number of your customers do like to casually solo.

Pfff, by 2008 you'd have to upgrade regardless to run the game and Vista will be standard. I kid, I kid! Please, don't hurt me. >.<

While I see where you are coming from, I took that as just an evolution of skills. I don't think they are withholding stuff from us, but the game engine does so by default.

What I mean is that by making a game engine you are defining the world, and when you define a world you inherntly block stuff off.

What that stement ment was they wanted to put stuff into that game that the CoH engine wouldn't be able to support without another major rewriting of the engine ( ie an expansion ).

The people who say this game is going to be dying over the next few years are fooling themselves into thinking pesemisticly.

I know the game won't last forver but we're still fine and will be for a long time.

EXACTLY ... But what that really says, is that they weren't thinking far enough into the future when they designed the engine ... I mean they said it right here:

It's going to be all the stuff we wanted to put into City of Heroes, and you'll get to run around in Marvel costumes. We've got more money now and more people. We'll add more depth. We want to take it to the next level."

They wanted it to go into CoH ... But between limitations of design and resourses, they couldn't do it ... Now that they have money (from us), they're gonna make the game that CoH was supposed to (they wanted it to) be.

They said it themselves.

This game is gonna bite it the minute MUO is determined to be a success (if it is a success) ... If MUO flops, the CoH/V will still survive.

There aren't enough Super Hero/Comic Book MMO Players out there to support TWO MMOs.

I think you're right.

Before the last thread on CoH 2.0 there was another one and in there one of the posters pointed out that given the way MMORPGs evolve and content gets added, in a way we are playing CoH 2.0 (or whatever x.x floats your boat) right now.

If you think about the way the game was at release and all the things that have been added in / changed since then, it's a very different game then when it was originally released.

But the game engine itself limits the devs from doing everything they want (posi often talks about tech not available for xxx or new tech just added new ability) and design decisions made 3 or maybe even 4+ years ago can prevent the devs from doing everything they'd like (think power customization).

I think MUO will be more like a generational change. CoH was billed as a next-gen or gen 2 MMORPG when it came out. MUO will be gen 3.

Umm, I don't feel like Westwood withheld things and ripped me off with Command and Conquer 1 even though Command and Conquer 3 looks like it's going to be just a little better then C&C 1 was.

There's such a big multi-year gap in the release dates (looks to be 5 years between CoH and MUO) that I really don't feel like product 1 was rushed out the door simply to get dollars to fund product 2.

I disagree that there aren't enough people to play CoH and MUO. People could have ( and probably did ) made the same arguments about all the fantasy based games, probably even WoW.

As for them saying they couldn't put things in coH and will try to put them into MUO, well that's what every game designer does. They think of these great ideas that are forced to be shelved. Along comes a new game and they can do them now.

But guess what. MUO will have the same problem. There will be so many ideas from Cryptic that they won't be able to do them all, so some will get scrapped or back shelved or what have you.

That's just the way the world works.
