Personally, I'm going to stand back and watch MUO for a while before I make any choices on it. I'm pretty wary of online games that have a big name attached to it. World of Warcraft and Final Fantasy XI are good examples.
[/ QUOTE ]
I'm hopeful that Cryptic will give preferential beta access to CoH players. It seems likely, so perhaps we'll all get to see what its like in MUO Beta.
[/ QUOTE ]
That would be freaking sweeeeeeeeeeet. I am so hopeful and excited about MUO. The devs have shown us how much they have learned with things like the new Faultline and how powers are slowly being better balanced.
I don't get all the fear-mongering that CoX is doomed. That's not liable to happen. Sure, I doubt there will be as many of us, but doomed? Pfff. Then Ultima Online, Everquest 1, and all those other ancient games never should have lasted as long as they did/have/are. Actually, it seems once an MMO has really established itself and settled in, like CoX has, it just doesn't one day on the way to the proverbial fridge have a heart attack and die.

[/ QUOTE ]
Its not so much that CoH is doomed. I don't think that, and I don't think its a useful discussion really. That said, the article gives a heavy impression that Cryptic's energy and innovation will be directed primarily to the new game. And given the recent history of six month waits between updates to CoX, it makes me wonder how much respect Cryptic is giving the the game that made them what they are today.

I thought it had more to do with the 40 hour work week and 1 1/2 hour lunchtime Warhammer sessions. Lazy nerds need to get to work!!
The City of Heroes Community is a special one and I will always look fondly on my times arguing, discussing and playing with you all. Thanks and thanks to the developers for a special experience.

*sigh* I wish I could have a 1 1/2 hour lunch break to play Warhammer. But I have no Warhammer stuff, so I'll just have to be content with cruising the boards and working on my DnD campeign. >.>

NCSoft (the publisher) and Cryptic Studios (the developer) are still firmly behind City of Heroes. It isn't going anywhere. NCSoft continues to fund a fantastic live team with lots of great stuff to come.
Yes, Cryptic is working on other products. These are different games with different financial backers. We plan on supporting multiple games in the same way that other great developers do.

Doesn't matter how much Cryptic may want to support CoX if the population continues to bottom out and this new MMO takes away even more people.

I don't think we're as much of a niche as people like to think.

Seconded. Before WoW, the benchmark for MMP success was 100,000 subscribers. Admittedly, WoW is a HUGE hit. Gigantic. Perhaps biggest in the PC industry ever, but that shouldn't diminish CoH's place as one of the largest North American MMP's. We're well over that 100,000 mark.
There's no way that NCSoft and Cryptic are going to do anything but continue to give CoH everything we can. I'm still playing, designing and playtesting!
Eventually people were going to move on from CoX anyway, it's just a matter of time. Think of the Marvel game to CoX like EQ2 is to EQ.
I just want Cryptic to develope a MMO based on Mech Warrior.

Just out of curiousity States, do you play on the Live servers, or do you only play on the internal ones? I'm guessing both, but you never know. Hmmm... I wonder if I have ever bumped into you on live... You probably don't play on Freedom though, it's a mad house, and odds are not great regardless, but still... >.>

It pretty much depends on how CoH will match up to MUO. I think it's a bit early to call it for now.
But eventually CoX will become outdated.

Oh. My...! I would be all over that like cheese on fondoo. Or is the cheese the fondoo... Well, who cares! Mechwarrior is one of my most favouristist games EVAR. I used to be able to bullseye the cockpit of a Masakari with guass rifles at close to 900 yards or feet, or whatever the measurement was. >.< I keep hoping and dreaming of another MW game for computer, but so far, nadda.

PS: Tundara's favourite Mech, the Dire Wolf (Diasha if you prefer) loaded with 3 LBX 20's. Don't get close, she bites. BOOM, insta kill, BOOM, insta kill.

[ QUOTE ]
The Crypteia were Spartan warriors who preyed on the Helots--ancient Sparta's slave population. If a Helot became troublesome, the Crypteia would stealthily strike.
Dakan and Emmert were graduate students who liked creating role-playing games similar to Dungeons & Dragons, which is played with pencil, paper and dice. Dakan and Emmert thought Crypteia would be a cool name for a game company. Rogers thought the word was, well, a little too cryptic. He suggested calling their new company Cryptic Studios. The name stuck.
[/ QUOTE ]
*scratches head* I thought the origin of the name "Cryptic Studios" had something to do with "cryptozoology."
Jack has said before all is good with COX. How many more times do you people gotta hear it? Geezuz.
Online games can and have lasted forever to this date... Gemstone Online (http://www.play.net/gs4/new.asp) is *still* going strong, and receives regular attention and updates, and that's into multiple decades.
I have no interest in playing in Marvel's established universe (or DC's for that matter). I *do* like playing in the *original* setting devised for City of Heroes and City of Villains, without all of the cruft associated with the established publisher's franchises (or a lifetime aware of the shenanigans said publishers get up to).
I can see keeping my CoH accounts live for a very long time, I'm having a great deal of fun at the moment... but I won't be signing up for another publisher's branded universe, particularly Marvel's.
I don't need to condemn those who do have an interest in doing so, but count me not among them.
Some days I just wake up cranky. Today might be one of those days...

[/ QUOTE ]
With all respect to Jack, we all know he's going to say that. As a public representative of Cryptic and CoH, theres nothing else he can say, especially on boards owned and operated by their business partners.
To say anything besides "we're going to continue to support CoH just as much as in the past" would be the equivalent of jumping in front of a bus. It would open him up to all sorts of attacks from board posters, and raise questions with Cryptic's business partners, as well as potentially affecting people's decisions on whether or not to keep subscribing.
Thats not to say that its not true, but like a politician, Jack is constrained in what he can and cannot say.

This game is gonna bite it the minute MUO is determined to be a success (if it is a success) ... If MUO flops, the CoH/V will still survive.
[/ QUOTE ]
I'll be cancelling my CoX account if MUO is any good. I can say that with 100% certainty.
[/ QUOTE ]
Ditto. There's no question in my mind. But the devs had better well had learned their lessons well from CoX. If I see something like ED again, I'll be happy to go into the arms of SOE. (No I didn't play SWG, nor do I care about NGE).
[/ QUOTE ]
Hey dude, people make mistakes and do things developers didn't intend. Can people ( in general, not you ) please get over the ED thing? It's been over a year already. Sheesh.
[/ QUOTE ]
Not likely. Changes like ED make you feel like you're in a beta test. And the fallout from that change is still around. I don't want to derail the thread, but I'm not willing to accept a change of that magnitude again from Cryptic. It's not even specifically about ED, it's about changes like ED.
