Best thing I've found to do for avatars is to select a square portion o the picture (holding down SHIFT while selecting will constrain the selection to a square, in most graphic edit programs), then resize THAT to 80x80.
Else you lose too much detail.
And I need to redo my CB avvie.

It works for most small and medium sized gifs -- but not the huge ones.
