Awesome, thanks for linking that. Interesting to finally see the origin of the Cryptic Studios name. I'd never seen that explained before.

"City of Heroes was very tightly focused on moment to moment combat," Rogers says. "The Marvel game will have more big components to it. It's going to be all the stuff we wanted to put into City of Heroes, and you'll get to run around in Marvel costumes. We've got more money now and more people. We'll add more depth. We want to take it to the next level."
[/ QUOTE ]
Thats a bit disheartening for CoH players. We're the reason Cryptic has more money. The quote makes it sounds like the plan is, put all the awesome ideas we wanted to have in the old game into the new game.

"It's pretty much whack-a-mole," Rogers says of his role as a manager on days like these. "Everybody is running around wondering why Captain America's shield doesn't go up when he gets hit. But on a usual day, it's people at their desks with their heads down making stuff."
[/ QUOTE ]
Looks like MUO is getting our shield sets.
[/ QUOTE ]
Perhaps not, but likely. It could just be a costum costume piece for Captain America.

[/ QUOTE ]
A game involving Captain America where you can't use his shield as a weapon is a crime against humanity. Seriously, its in the Geneva convention.

Can people ( in general, not you ) please get over the ED thing? It's been over a year already. Sheesh.
[/ QUOTE ]
No.
MUO will probably fail just about as miserably as Everquest Online Adventures because it's going to be primarily coded a console game and the PC version will be an afterthought - completed right before some deadline. Reminds me very much about ED and it's integration into CoH.
...except for the fact that, last I checked, EQOA was never released for PC.
Dawncaller - The Circle of Dawn
Too many blasted alts to list, but all on Virtue.
Oh, they released a PC version of the game, alright. I believe it was called, ummm.... EverQuest.
Not from what I see.
I see two games based in the same world, with different rulesets.

But MUO will be. I am saying there will be much weeping and gnashing of teeth - because of the console platform focus.
Er... >.> Maybe it's just me... but uhm... wouldn't it be weird if MUO *wasn't* better than CoH?
I mean really... I see alot of people griping that "MUO will have the stuff we can't have in CoH" - it'll be a far newer game... of /course/ it will have stuff we can't have here >.> the devs have learned alot from COH - including what players want.
I suspect however they'll be quite a bit different overall. I dunno if I'd even bother to try it really though - I'm not in CoH for the "super hero" part of the game. I'm here as much for the costumes as anything <'x'> MUO... prolly not for me.

The devs may need to remember more than just what players want. They'll need to know what the players NEED as well.
When I heard the MUO and DCO projects were going to be coded for console platforms, I knew immediately these were going to be pork projects.
Tell me, how many console gamers use keyboards to chat with their PC counterparts in an MMO? Whoops ... not many, huh? Nothing like trying to grow a community of superhero mutes. This is only ONE challenge in many to come because some propeller-head, bean counter decided to merge console gamers with PC gamers in an MMO.

Yeah yeah, rub it in why dontcha? 8)
Doesn't matter tho, I don't run Vista, and after reading the list of "updates" I'd have to do in order to run it, unlikely going to. (stupid, having to downgrade video cards in order to run the OS)

*sigh* And I think CoH is too quiet as it is now (not counting AP, and even then that zone is at times). Teams are quiet, with sometimes "GJ", "over there", "<buff> plz", messages, all of which can be pointed to and clicked on.
Ironically, this only goes to further support the idea that full-featured MMOGs CAN be successfully adapted to console systems and controllers.

Last I heard, Warhammer: Age of Reckoning (aka WAR) will be a more modern test for this - it's on the PC and Xbox 360.
Ultimately, I think that the distance between online and console games will shrink as more people move to voice chat (or voice chat facilities get better). You take away having to type words, you won't need as many keys so you don't need a keyboard.

The only game I know of that was designed for both console and PC was FFXI
I like FFXI but I don't play it. Why? It is any extreme time sink when compared to other MMO's OTher than that I like alot of things about it. They implemented a interesting way to not only communicate from the console but also to overcome the language barrier.
In fact, as I recall, Some of the console gamers were more talkative than the PC ones. Releaseing a game for consoles as well as PC isn't a bad thing. Now that these consoles actually have a hard drive updates will be easier to do.
From my perspective all you are doing is opening the game to a larger market than you would otherwise be able to reach. Not every gamer owns a PC. Many choose to remain with consoles just so they dont have to deal with the insane technical issues that often arise on a PC.
I really enjoy CoX. I will problably try MUO. If it is better AND I can recreate all of my characters over there then I may move. I think its too early to tell right now though. I like that the content on CoX is origional. As for MUO... well I like the Marvel universe too but in all honesty it was gettign into CoX that really started me looking into the DC and Marvel comics. I always had a passing interest before but now I'm a more active fan.
2 years is still a ways away. I will be interested to see where CoX is going to go between here and MUO.
It isn't like MMO's just die because a title with a similar theme comes out. As far as I know even UO and EQ are still around.

There's a couple MMO's in development or very early beta that are supposed to have integrated voice chat for teaming.
Keyboards may or may not matter in a few years. We'll just have to see what becomes 'the standard'.

Your sense of irony is as interesting as your choice of the word "successfully".
Canned phrases and emotes will not grow an online community in an MMO. However, incorporating voice chat might - if the demand for the product fares somewhat better than DDO's effort. Suffice to say, I am skeptical.
FFXI has done very well, for a pre-WoW MMO, as far as I know (had around.. 300k in its heyday, is dangling in the 150-250k range now, if the stats rattling around in my brain are correct - I'm about to go to sleep, and so, will not go to more effort), and it was developed first and foremost as a console game.

Fantasy genre > Superhero genre - whether Console or PC platform ready. So I'm not terribly inclined to disagree with you. I was careful to point out that there were not A LOT of console/PC hybrid MMOs on the market. What if I had said, there were not a lot of superhero genre console/PC hybrids on the market? Plus, I wonder how well FFXI did in the US? Or better yet, how well is CityofHero(tm) doing in Korea?
/sleep on it.
I'm sure my family will try out Marvel Universe.
However, anytime I look at another game, I just can't get excited.
There is a reason that Cox was named one of the best games to get your girlfriend/wife into gaming by one of the top gaming magazines (I'm drawing a blank on which one at the moment). One of the reasons I have so many alts is that I love the costume designer.

Eventually people were going to move on from CoX anyway, it's just a matter of time. Think of the Marvel game to CoX like EQ2 is to EQ.
I just want Cryptic to develope a MMO based on Mech Warrior.

It pretty much depends on how CoH will match up to MUO. I think it's a bit early to call it for now.

Mechwarrior would be cool for an MMO. I've also always thought a Shadowrun MMO would be extremely cool
