Reminders:

Back up data unless it doesn't matter if it goes away.

Don't gamble with money you can't afford to lose.

While Globalchat is called beta, Dont do more work, or more changes, than you will be comfortable with reproducing them or losing them if some or all of your changes go away.

QA is the new google.

Google, both a verb and a noun.

I believe QA was both a verb and a noun before Google was.

Dont know about any word, but if I can noun it, I can always verb it. The part of the fun of American English.

Did you just turn the word "noun" into a verb?

Thx, Bruce for letting us know the status of GC.

Yes. He verbed it.

Global Chat seems to be working again, at least for the time being.

For some reason though, all my channels were removed from the tabs I added them too, so I've had to add them all again. Other people in my SG have had the same problem. So if it looks like it isn't working... check that the channel is actually being displayed somewhere!

That seems to be a pervading bug. I know I get this happening about 50% of the time I log a character in, this existed before today's changes.

One small change/option I'd like to see added is the ability for people to not only see your handle when you chat, but also have the option of seeing your current character name as well.

Leave this as an option for the message sender to turn on or off.

Right now their messages appear in chat as:

handle: msg

and with the option on their message would look like

handle(charname): msg

This is because I notice one of the most pervasive GC questions is "Who are you on as?"

What about handle(charname@servername)?

I think it might actually be better for this to show up in the User List window--give it a couple of character/server columns and let the user choose whether to allow them to be shown or not. After all, you don't need to be told who a player is on as every time he says something; it's just more clutter.

As a workaround, bind a key to "beginchat /send channelname [$name] " (traling space after the last bracket, replace channelname with the name of the channel). That will make all your messages show up as Global Handle: [Character Name]

Problem is, sometimes you don't WANT others to know what character you are on as, at least for roleplay purposes.

I would like to see the ability to selectively hide the character you are using from displaying in the extended information of the Global Friends window.

Orriginally in gc threads kill skuls was being used as an example of A channal to display syntax like for joining and talking into a channal with a space. and at this point there were no channal suggestions on the forums.

so what happened to me is i was scouring the forums for a gc channal with people any channal would do since i was testing. and i didnt find any so i tryed kill skuls and there was like 50 people on it for similar reasons.

later they all spread off to other channals as word of moth and forums gave oter options. but kill skuls still remains the largest channal i have found. and probibly will remain untill some sort of listing function comes around. even if it just lists the top 5-10 non private channals. or coh sponcered channals.

< like AT, server, help, and news channals>

Is it just Victory, or has global chat gone down again?

I think it's down again. Still gives the "thank you for testing message," but no channel access once it's turned on.

I wrote to CuppaJo:

"After Global Chat goes live, could you make an offical thread on each server board, similar to the SG thread?

I would see you posting a template for each post to follow similar to:

Channel Name:
Channel Description: [usage, membership, public or private, etc.]
Channel Operators:

Thanks,

--Jason "

"GREAT idea. I will do then when its out of beta.

So we will have a directory, but it won't be in game. I imagine a listing of all public channels from within the game's interface is on the "quality of life issues" list.

What will be the point with only five channels?

I can think of something like a dozen or more that I'll want to join up to. I'd use a window ('4', probably) to have all the AT channels, all the server channels I play on, and any local city (San Jose, etc) channels appropriate open. I can then close that if I get busy, and not miss anything important.

I can put all the people I know, and all my supergroups and things in another window.

Five archetypes, a dozen (or so) servers, half a dozen super groups, local groups, plus special interests (I've already heard of "taxkbots", "livejournal", "kill skuls"...) and you'll need a bunch of channels.

Five is seriously not enough.

If they've set it low for testing, that's cool. If it's that low when we're done... this isn't useful, because I can't do all the things with it I'd like to, and I'll have to choose to snub groups I'd be interested in.

Not a choice I want to have to make!

Please add many more simeltaneous channels!

I thought of this this morning on the way in to work... these channels sure look like IRC. You have a handle. You join channels. You send private messages.

Wouldn't it be swell if I could point my regular IRC client at them, and be able to keep an eye on them from outside the game? I can tell you I'd have Trillian open on the supergroup all afternoon at the office.

It would be wonderful, and I'd like to see it.

Am I the only one?
