Global Chat Beta on Live Official Thread
I like to see the # of tab (currently 10) increased or even no limit on it. I haven't used the Channels yet but I think 5 is to low. Someone said 10 I think that is good # too.

Somebody should point out that you can keybind the Global Chat Channel menu thingy.
/bind <key> "menu$$contextmenu 2"
will allow you to open and close the window.

Still waiting for someone with binding expertise to help with this as it is not working properly. The main menu stays open after the Channel Members window pops up. Then, you have to close the main menu. Basically, the bind opens the main menu, selects Channel Members and then doesn't close.
Since many of us will be opening and closing the Channel Members window frequently, it would sure be helpful to have a bind that allows us to do it with one keystroke.
I apologize if this has already been covered...
The only really annoying thing to me is there's no shortcut to typing in global chat. I keep my input on "team" as default, and type /b for broadcast, /sg for supergroup, etc. But to type in <channel name> chat you have to click over to the tab or type the whole thing out like this: /send <channel name> <message>. It would be alot cooler if you could assign a shortcut such as /ch1, /ch2, and so forth.
That being said, is it possible to use a keybind to automate the /send <channel name> part and leave the cursor ready to type a message?
Ah...you must have a big monitor. I'm working with 1024 pixels of width. The minimum width of the chat panes is 360 pixels. Two chat panes on either side of the screen would leave me with 304 pixels of space in the middle to view my game play. That's not enough space for me.
So far, my best solution is having all the channels on one disconnected tab, which lives under the text input area. I have keybinds to switch between the three channels I've joined: G, Shift+G and Ctrl+G.
I can live with the binds as long as I don't join any more channels. But the placement still bugs me a little. Eh, it will just take some getting used to.
Something problematic with /ghide... if a friend hides, they disappear off your friends list. Totally disappear, not just listed as offline. It is as if you've never friended them.
This means you don't know if they're still on your list or not. They might have removed you, but you don't know either way. It also means you can't remove them from the list until they unhide themselves (using the interface in the window itself, it might be possible with slash commands).
All round, this is not a user friendly feature. It would be better if like the server friends, it just lists them as offline when they hide.
Few things...
Theres a bug currently that causes the global channels to drop off tabs. Its possible it happens when you try to use a channel before typing /chatbeta1.
When ghide-n, and you get a gtell, it would be nice if it reminded you you were hidden somehow. Too easy to have people tricking others into revealing their hide status.
My main Peeve:
I can understand having a limit on the number of global friends. I can understand the concept of having to both be or both not be global friends. I can't understand having both.
I have to tell someone: sorry, you can't have me as a friend, my list is full?!? I really find that distasteful.

Have created a tab on my chat windows, created a channel, and can get tot he member listing. I have folks I have invited on there but it says you can invite SUpergroup members but Supergroup is not availabe, it is greyed out.

I dont know if this was answered yet or not, but in order to invite an entire SG to a channel, you must be the Leader of the SG and an operator on the channel. I havent tested it with captain level toons. An ordinary member of a SG cannot invite the whole SG to a channel. I see this as a good thing.

I've just posted a pictorial tutorial on the way I have my global chat channels set up, over in the LJ City of Heroes community. Hope it helps some people out.

One thing I discovered is that global chat is currently limited to five channels. This is seriously not a lot of channels; if someone plays 2 or 3 characters on 2 or 3 servers and is in multiple supergroups, the chat channels could be used up very quickly.
We have the ability to put up to 10 tabs in a particular text window...why only five channels?
[/ QUOTE ]
This is seriously not enough channels - I just hit this limit and, wow, it's really not very reasonable.
Also, you can't put things in quotes - the server returns "too many arguments" and I'm not sure everyone who sees that will know what it means. So they'll send tells and the tells won't get through, and they won't always know why.

Question:
Is there a slash command to type in a generic global channel?
For instance, lets say I create a new channel with the name "Krazy's Channel" and I want to talk in it by use a "/" to do so, like, "/gchannel, hey guys!" like you can do in friends or SG (ie. "/sg, hey guys")? It's kind of a pain to set it up, you have to right click on the Comm. window and click on one of the channels, then it sets it to talk/speak in that particular channel.
P.S. Sorry if someone has already posted this question, I didn't find it in the posts I skimmed over.

Not sure if there is a command to do it that way, they way I do it is use /send "channel name" "message"
This works but right now with the way global chat is it will not work with a channel that has a space in it.
If i try to send a message to a channel say its called hello there i do
/send hello there hey
it will send the message "there hey" to the channel hello.
but like people said its beta, we need to report as many issues as we can.
I know I'm being pedantic here but from what I can tell this is not a 'global' chat system, its a US cross server chat system. EU version doesn't have this yet (AFAIK) and when they do its pretty unlikely that you will be able to chat between US and EU servers so please, don't call it "Global" until it actually is!
Its kind of like the World Series.... US wide does not equal Global!
I was doing some testing tonight just to see how "hidden" one can get. I was on an alt, not my main handle. A friend on another character, who shares a global channel, helped with the investigation.
/hide does what it is supposed to.
/ghide hides you from the global friends, etc.
However it doesn't take your handle off of the channel "members list" that you can open from the chat panel. So, you are still visible to members that you share a global channel with. Not sure if it is supposed to work that way. I'd prefer it didn't.
Thoughts?

I hope the non-beta version does let people talk to the euro servers. With the current set-up, if anyone I know goes out and buys city of heroes, I can't play the game with them (I imported the game from America at release). At least if global chat let us talk to the euro servers, I could chat to them while I'm playing.

I apologize also if this has alraedy been covered.
if the channel is one name (no spaces) you can do it like this for a channel named 'Watchguard':
/bind w "beginchat /send Watchguard "
if the channel is multiple word name (has a space) you can do it like this for a channel named 'Safe Harbor':
/bind h beginchat /send "Safe Harbor"
these exact binds work for me. you could also make Macros for them this way I would think.
I understand its beta and of course will have bugs, just hope they find a way to fix the space issue in channel names, till then guess i gotta click tabs to send to the channels.
Found a new bug.
If I type /t @<handle>, and then after comma, if ANY word, ANY has a quote or " " in it, like "test", it says Wrong numer of parameters SendUser.
This space is intentionally left blank.
Is it just me or is GC not working since the patch this morning?
I typed /chatbeta 1. It gave the message thank you for testing, etc.
But I had to reset what text got sent to my GC windows, and I see no text at all in them. Even if I send a message it doesn't show up. I tried rejoining the channels but get the message that I've already joined them.
Is it broken?
yea, it stopped working like 20-30 minutes ago, it just suddendly stopped working and it has seemingly lunctuated on and off since then but not actually working. It was flunctuating like it was trying to work properly but couldn't.....
Same problem here. GC not working on Pinnacle
This space is intentionally left blank.
ya its all messed up on liberty too.... i get the message saying thank you for testing it...but there are no channels, the GC friends list is gone...hmmmm
I am very interested in the Global Chat beta. As a long time casual user of IRC and recent IM fan, I am happy to see it coming to CoH. I wanted to know if there is a way to list the public channels? I understand that for a private channel, one must be invited. Did I miss this info in the instructions, Global Chat Guide ? Thanks in advance.

yup no Global on Infinity Either.
No Global Chat on Champion currently either.
What I've done is detached Window #4 from my chat panel and dragged it over to the right-hand side of the screen, where it fits in nicely between the bottom of my map window and the top of my Inspiration tray. Split it into two panes, dragged some tabs into each one; each tab = 1 chat channel.
I set my Default Channel for my main chat tab as being "team", which is what I usually have my chat on anyway, then I clicked the "A" icon above the text entry pane, to switch my text entry to the currently Active tab.
This means I can simply click on a chat tab, hit enter, and type to send text to a given channel--then click back into my main chat pane and I'm on team send again. (Whenever I need to say something locally, I usually just type /l comment.)
