Global Chat Beta on Live Official Thread

And a confirmation dialog when leaving a channel. Right now I know a lot of people are making the mistake of clicking the "Leave" button to try to close the "Channel Members" window. This will leave the channel, but not close the window, and you then have to re-invite them.
[/ QUOTE ]
Yes, please. I've accidentally removed myself from channels, and in the case of private ones, there's not always an operator available to re-invite.
Now if I could only figure out how I sometimes accidentally switch the channel into which I'm chatting...
More space in the Global Friends list!!!
What really gets me about the global chat system is why waste so many design assets on such a thing? I am sure that most players don't need to talk to others across servers. If I knew others that play on different servers we would keep in contact through messengers.
/ghide is great and all, but if you're in a channel your friends still see you on the Channel Members window. Is there anyway to hide yourself in that menu as well as the Global Friends list?

I keep having peeps disappear off my global friends list and I keep disappearing off other peeps lists. I laugh everytime I get reinvited to be someones global friend esp. when they invited me the day before and I said yes.
Also, I agree on the hide - you can still see someone on in the Global Channel if they are hidden. Is there a fix?
Sometimes ya just gotta hide or you never get to play the game

Anyone else confused by this name-nazi decision to only let you change your global chat handle once, and if you typo it you're simply SOL? I went to change mine and typoed it, but since there isn't even a confirmation box or anything, well, the one rare typo I make on that handle (waklingshark instead of walkingshark, hard to even notice until you look real closely) naturally managed to pop in.
So I send a request to please fix the typo. And I get a giant FU from the customer service (once again reinforcing the odd state of affairs in this game, where the development team is accessable, informative, and generally awesome and the customer service team is a useless appendage that occasionally flails about in impotent seizures before returning to its gimpy rest state) telling me it can only be changed once.
Right, so obviously the mechanism exists to change it. So obviously it CAN be changed as many times as they want to. But arbitrarily, they've decided to make it so we can only change it the one time, and if we typo it... well, sorry, you're SOL. If global chat handles will be reset once the beta is over, this is fine. I can change it then. But if I'm stuck with this damn typoed name for the rest of my time playing CoH (which is what it looks like now) I'm more than a little annoyed. They give the example that "Much like regular server character names, it was not designed for players to be able to change their names once their first preferred selection has been made."
Too bad if you mess up your character name, you can realize it in the first few minutes and go back, delete the character, and fix the name. With this, you're just screwed.
This is on the rare times I have to say to cryptic: Bad job. Try again.

I agree completely. I participated in the "Live Beta" but the handle I wanted @Bagheera was taken by someone NOT testing Beta...so I couldn't ask them if they really wanted it...so I ended up taking @Baggy (My main is Bagheera, lazy people just type baggy). ANYWHO, the Global chat goes live, and the guy who HAD @Bagheera changed it, so it is now available. BUT, they didn't reset my name once we got out of testing. I petitioned, and got the birdy that customer service likes to flip. I really wish that they didn't have such a "Too bad ha ha" sounding form response. I HATE form letter responses.
Every time I zone a complete list of which players I have on Global Ignore is printed in the System channel. This is distracting and completely unneccesary given that we have a full Global Ignore tab available to us on the Friends window. When I ignore someone I want to forget they exist. I don't need to be reminded how annoying they were every time I zone. Is there any good reason for this verbosity? If not, I for one would like to see it gone.

The ability to change our Chat Names more than once would be far too UBER. With this obviously unbalanced power, we could PL ourselves to level 50 in hours, defeat any mob risk free, and obtain an unlimited amount of Special Enhancements. It's just too serious an exploit, so they're keeping a tight "reign" on it.
I'm confused as to why there have been no changes or improvements on the system considering the enormous amounts of bugs and faults with it, and that it's gone through two seperate Testing phases? Is the Global Chat Department having trouble logging on to their computers, are all their pencils broken? What?
What's the point of testing it and going Live if they don't correlate the results of the Test?
Consider this scenario, your regular toon you play always usually gets several tells to join a team the second you log on. It is nice to have a set group of friends that you routinely play with but sometimes it is almost boring as you have experienced almost all content with the same group of friends. That whole, 'whats he gonna do next' feeling is gone because you know exactly what they are going to do.
For instance, after several months playing with my level 50 i got tired of the same old faces and wanted to try something new so I made an alt no one new about and it revitalized my CoH experience leveling with new people and enjoying low level content.
With Global chat it will make that scenario even worse, and personally I have never liked the hide feature, it makes me feel somewhat dirty when I use it. What if you would like to make new friends with different characters.
With global chat beta you had to activate it before anyone can click on you and make you a global friend. I suggest that for each character you have there is a check box under the options that allows that character to be included in your list of characters for your global chat handle. The reasoning is thus, if your friend tries to click on you he has to get your permission to see your handle/characters. If you dont want certain groups of friends to even be able to see your handle/characters you have to deny him this option which will only make for sore feelings. But by instituting an activate feature on a character basis, your alias characters can play with a clear conscious.
Any thoughts?
Back on page 14 I suggested making the /ghide command work on a per-character basis, so you could just leave some chars permanently hidden from Global Chat (/ghide still leaves you visible on the /search window; that is still controlled by /hide, so you are not completely hidden).
I think what I suggested would achieve the same thing you are after Grudge, just implemented differently. Whichever way it's done, I agree.

It should be simple to create an IM client that did not execute code sent through it, did not allow opportunities for buffer overflows, etc. The security holes that have been relating to IM clients have to do with links to browsers, sending files, and so forth. Merely opening a chat interface so lines of text can be sent from within CoH to outside CoH and back would not be a security risk if done with reasonable care.
Everquest has had an IM client for a long time (EQIM). It's an unstable, crashing-all-the-time piece of junkware, but I have yet to hear of a security problem it created for the EQ servers or clients running it.
In the workplace, IM clients can allow a lot of productivity gain as people can discuss their plans in a group setting without leaving their offices and computers. It also creates its own record. In many ways superior to frequent meetings.
Stop the IM hate

main reason external IM clients are bad, just log into diablo 2 and take a look at all the adds that pop up ingame and sometimes flod the screen wiht text....even if it ntoa security risk..do you REALLY want a mass of tells or the broadcast/recuest/sg/whatever challes flodded with "buy HO's From www.sellingho's. and other ingame items, ask abotu our pwoerlevelign services!!!"... alsready saw a few toons with that as their character description... would HATE to have it showing up ingame...
tho seeign adds flashed across bill bords ingame would add a tiny tough of reality tot he game....
so would being able to smash said boards and watch em snap crackle and pop...
My only complaint is that global shows people online when they're not.
a quick question, how do I bind a key to open chat in a certain channel or the active tab?
something like /bind [key] team
(oh and does anyone know how to take care of the fact that if you open chat this way, your first keystroke isn't recorded?)

This is how I do it:
bind <key> beginchat /send <channel>
Make sure to add a trailing space at the end, to separate your message from the channel name. Otherwise you'll have to begin each message with a space, which I suppose you could do if you really wanted to. Me, I'm just lazy.
If your channel name has a space in it, you'll have to put double-quotes around the channel name (put the trailing space outside the quotes in this case).

Yes! The global list seems very unreliable, and more like a list of "these people may or may not be online or have been online recently".
I,along with other mebers of my Sg, have been having much more lag since the inception of the global chat thing. I am on east coast and I get tremendous lag anymore. I have not gotten this much lag since Beta.It is very bad. My Sg is located on the JUSTICE server.

I've been having this problem alot lately. I know its a bug but alot of friends are those that don't read these boards and I find myself having to reasure others that I still like them and I'm not mad at them for anything.
I'm not sure about the global hide thing but if they're not on my list i figure they are hiding or got droped from it.
What I do notice is names tend to drop when I log and relog with an alt.
