I'll try to keep it short as this is a contribute not a general rant.

[*]Agree for having the option to change global handle to current player name, but disagree with making it <globalhandle><toonname> as this is too long imho[*]Agree with need for more than 5 channels i can think of 7 i use, but stick to 5 cos i have to[*]Agree an external client would be very nice, maybe a small Dlable IM similar to MSN or AIM, ver useful for situations where u cant DL the entire game but would like to let ur SG know, some of us are far too into this, really, seriously.[*]Suggestion: create an option in the drop menu for chat tabs to "bind channel to" in a similar way to we already use binds with /beginchat[*]Suggestion: allow us to turn on *chimes* for different chats similar to those which we get for /t's and /g's, i know that a tab highlights when a msg is sent to it but sometimes ilike to hide a channel so i can see more. I personally only have my extended SG chat and personal chat in my main text and would like some shimes for the windows i keep open for global and kill skuls[*]Suggestion: create /commands which will allow us to open and close numeric panes (coinciding with the chime suggestion) such as /pane # (where # = 1-4) (may i also point out that every other window already has this facility e.g /chat, /nav, /tray)[*]
BUG: many of the letter short cuts e.g. "Add tab" do not work which is frustrating for those of us that are short cut users mostly out of necessity as we use laptaps and rarely touch our mouse pads.[/list]I think thats it for now, now go do some good work!

When I began to reply to this post, I thought I was going to be able to show that there already was a command for this, just not a well-known one.

I was wrong.

There are commands to switch between 'tabs' but no commands to switch between 'panes'.

Here are the ones to switch between tabs, in case they'll help you accomplish what you want to do.

/tabglobalnext
Cycle forward through all chat tabs in all windows. Will open the corresponding chat window if necessary.

/tabglobalprev
Cycle backwards through all chat tabs in all windows. Will open the corresponding chat window if necessary.

/tabnext [#]
Cycle forward through all chat tabs in indicated chat window (0-4).

/tabprev [#]
Cycle backward through all chat tabs in indicated chat window (0-4).

/tabselect [tab]
Select the given chat tab. Will open the corresponding chat window if necessary.

/tabtoggle
Make the previously active chat tab the new active tab. Used to flip between two tabs.

Hope these commands are helpful and I guess I'll have to second the desire for a pane command just for the sake of completeness.

Still need a working bind to open the Channel Members window. The one posted before doesn't work properly. Also, the main thing my SG has asked for is to show the global handle and the toon being played in the channel members window, similar to the global friends list. Right now, it only shows the global handle.

Honestly I thought that's what Global Chat was <blush>. I wrote a stupid note to my SG asking how to configure Trillian (my fave IRC and IM interface). Duh to me. Now that I know it's in game only, I am less motivated to use it. Don't get me wrong, I think it is still useful, but it would be full dimensional with this feature.

My 2 cents

No offense guys, but to open Global Chat to be accessible by IM type applications would open up a host of security issues.

No thanks.

Every time I zone a list of my global ignores is presented to me, just as which of my normal friends are on. Look, I hate the people I have globally ignored and don't want to be reminded of their existence every time I mapswap. This can't possibly be what was intended. Listing what global friends are on, sure. But your ignore list? That's ridiculous.

I'm sure this has been asked elsewhere but I didn't see it. What is the cap on your Global Friends list? It seems to be about 30 which is WAY too low. If you can have 75 people in your SG, why wouldn't you have at least that many available slots on Global Friends?

If it did talk outside the game I could chat with the many friends I have made in COH. It would be great bacause we could get people together for game and arrange times. I think a COH IM would be a great think for outside game. Even better for cryptic if you could send COH trial invites to people not part of the game from the IM client. Think of the people you might get to sign on.

You do NOT realize the amount of security holes that are opened up with instant messenger programs. I know quite a few people IRL who've had their entire networks shut down by virus/Trojan horses/worms/etc brought in through IM.

No. Keep IM type applications AWAY from Global Chat.

Im fine with not linking it to the game. Anything that could impact the servers does worry me. Maybe having an IM client that was customized to have a more COH bent would be a nice thing.
I just want a nice and easy way to contact users outside the game. This can be done with existing software on the user end and it's nothing that needs to involve the game.

I understand about security and things have to be done the right way. At the same time I don't stop using my computer because of the various things that can happen too it.

I am involved in security myself and I agree with you on the dangers that a bad im client can do. We would never allow an IM client in the workplace and monitor workstations and block at the firewall to prevent such problems.

Of course the poor judgement of users will kill any plan

There is a maximum of 10 tabs that can be added to a Chat Window. Left and right arrows allow the player to scroll through the tabs if they exceed the size of the window.

[/ QUOTE ]

Can the maximum number of tabs be increased? I used 9 tabs before Global. I'm really struggling to get some clarity back to the chat panes, information overload.

Yeah.. I've done alot of condencing on mine.

I would like the Window #s to turn red (like the email button) when they are closed and receive a new message on them too. This would allow me to put global chat on one of them, not have the window open, and still know when someone is chatting on that channel. Much more useful!

Great idea! While they're at it they can fix the email tab so it does the same everytime.

It should be simple to create an IM client that did not execute code sent through it, did not allow opportunities for buffer overflows, etc. The security holes that have been relating to IM clients have to do with links to browsers, sending files, and so forth. Merely opening a chat interface so lines of text can be sent from within CoH to outside CoH and back would not be a security risk if done with reasonable care.

Everquest has had an IM client for a long time (EQIM). It's an unstable, crashing-all-the-time piece of junkware, but I have yet to hear of a security problem it created for the EQ servers or clients running it.

In the workplace, IM clients can allow a lot of productivity gain as people can discuss their plans in a group setting without leaving their offices and computers. It also creates its own record. In many ways superior to frequent meetings.

Stop the IM hate

I have been thinking about it, and I would be worried about allowing any random IRC client to connect to the game servers.

It would be neat to have access from outside, but a java or javascript based access via browser would be fine and dandy if they could swing it. It would let me chatter with folks from outside the game and give them the control of the interface to the game servers.

Not to say it'll happen, but it would be cool.

Has anyone else noticed that the game seems to lag more since GC went live?

Can't say I have, and lag was at the forefront of my mind this evening. The only lag I get is when travelling near stations in busy zones and when my DSL occasionally goes funky.

Yes, but also many more mapserver issues, at least until this last patch, which seems to have improved both quite a bit for me. Not sure if it's a coincidence...

This has probably been brought up already, but just in case it hasn't...

There's a tendency for the global chat channels to remove themselves from the chat tabs. Channels which I have not left or been kicked from will sometimes just not be on the chat tabs when I log in and enable global chat.

This is fixed by editing the chat tab and re-adding the channel to the tab. However, this gets tiresome doing it for every channel on every tab I have them on, for each character. I suspect that interruptions in the global chat server cause this, as it always happened early on when the chat server went down a lot; when it came back up we always had to adjust the chat tabs to include the global chat channels again.

The tab settings for global chat channels should be made persistent and automatically re-activating, without user intervention.

I agree this is VERY annoying. However, I was under the impression this is just because of beta testing. Perhaps this incorrect? I hope not, because it would turn people off using it, I'm sure.

I'm far more worried about DoS attacks causing the servers to crash due to the generation of traffic, and the threat that, with the way most people tend to use the same password for everything (despite the many times security analysts advise people not to do such a thing), user's passwords to the game being compromised and having their accounts hijacked.

And that doesn't even count zero-day vulnerabilities.

Heck, if Windows XP SP2 and Windows 2k3 is still vulnerable to a LAND attack, I'd hate to think what might lurking out there that would attack through an IM client.

Is there away to send a message to all your friends that are online via global chat at once?
With the friends list you can go

and everyone online will get the message.

I need help with a global chat problem (a bug probably, I've already submitted it). Yesterday someone in my SG sent me a global friend request. I hit yes, but noticed he didn't get added to my friends list. He logged off very shortly after sending the request (not sure if that's relevant). Now, every single time I log in or zone, that global friends request window comes back up! I can hit Yes or No in the window, and it will go away -- until the next zone. If I hit yes, he does NOT get added to my list. If I hit No, I get a message confirming that I'm not his friend. But nothing really changes. I cannot figure out what to do to fix this. I've logged out, turned GC on and off, tried ignoring him, etc. Any ideas? It's driving me nuts.
