  1. I always giggle when I watch this video. I can't believe most people have never seen it.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=24yn0leXykI

This is an example of compelling storytelling for the MMO market. Making trailers of this type for upcoming issues (even if it's just for the hardcore fans/forumites) would have been awesome. I'm not kidding. In-jokes can be a fun and great community builder (RE: Kill Skuls, GONE TO THE AMERICANS).

Seriously though, the CoH video I love comes not from NCSoft, Paragon Studios or Contest entries. It was made by Samuraiko for Issue 11 using the excellent music of Danny Elfman and telling a great story by just using visuals and the mood set by the music.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QJ7YGA8WVmM

It's always her video I re-watch first. Every official video that came out, I always compared to this one and found they never measured up. (So sorry, BP! I liked the ones you've showcased!)

Even if I never get to play CoH again or interact with the community, I still have gigs and gigs of all types (official and fan-created: music, film, desktops, contests, screenshots, CCG, RPG, bases, costumes, icons, badges and more) that I can still share with others.
  2. OK, so I've never really shared most of these policies/guidelines outside of a few other really, really ancient mods of VB.

In order to become a mod of VB, you had to continuously promote badging or run anything having to do with badges over a long period of time.

I never released this information because I didn't want anyone to try and show-off or intentionally get the job. If you truly were into running TFs for badges, volunteering to help others get badges and so forth, I (or occasionally one of the other long-time mods who knew the guidelines) would promote the person to a moderator.

I felt it had to be over a long enough period of time so that we didn't get moderators who were really enthusiastic about the game for 1-3 months and then drop out and never see them again. I wanted players who showed long-term commitment to the game.

The silencing policy came about after the first time I used the moderation tools to silence someone. I don't remember exactly who it was (and hopefully one of the other oldbies will help me remember), but it was someone who was running Hami raids and had a repetitive hero name, tanker, huge body type, cow, Hank? Anyways, he got really pissed off, sent me nasty tells, trash talked in other channels, etc. This incident led to the formation of the silencing guidelines.

If a moderator felt a need to silence one or more people, I asked them to send a tell to the person first, privately explaining that what they were doing was out-of-bounds and ask them politely to stop. If that was not effective (and I can recall only one incident in 8 years that it wasn't), they were to inform the person via the chat channel that what they were doing was improper and ask them to stop. If that failed, then they were silenced or even kicked as needed.

Usually any topic that was directly related to CoH or had some common tie with the game (comics, other MMOs, TT RPGs, etc.) was perfectly fine in the channel. Quite some time ago, there was a period late at night (Eastern) when the conversation would occasionally get risque or even more explicit. Usually just a moderator posting "Badges." in the channel was enough to return people more game-related topics.

However, one night after this had been going on for some time I created the private channel "VB After Dark" or VBAD and several of the more, um, adult chatters were invited in. The MOTD encouraged members to say whatever the heck they wanted, the more taboo, the better. The channel still exists, but I don't think it ever got above 20 members. I'll make the channel public next time I log in. Feel free to use if for Whatever.

    I remember....

OK, so I try not to tout my long-time veteran status. I'm going to suspend that rule for this post.

I've still got the email that activated my CoH forum account on 07-15-2003.

I've still got the email of my closed beta invite on 03-05-2004.

I've still got my "Cannonfodder is 50" post's text archived from 05-02-2005.

I've still got my Cannonfodder turns 50 demorecord.

I remember helping Curveball with his bind guide.

I remember name reservation madness, when they changed the policy during registration.

I remember being bummed because I had to work when they were shutting down the beta servers and I couldn't do the invasion they had planned. I still feel it's one of the few major events I missed out on.

I remember Hard Corps (still have my welcome email from Cosmic Titan) to Omega Corps to Legion of Victory.

I remember the sudden die-off after WoW launched. Suddenly, all the SG members weren't around as much and started to not log in at all.

I remember getting my first pop-up window saying "[Name] has invited you to join The Gentleman's Club" and thinking, 'OK, sure, why not. I can join a SG, I guess.'

I remember the movie marquee contest.

I remember the name a zone contest.

I remember the create one of the surviving eight contest.

I remember posting my ideas about global channel naming schema to the forums and sending it to the mods before i3 launched.

I remember poshyb creating the slash commands to give your henchmen inspirations for me.

I remember when they increased SG membership to 150.

I remember when they did the Prestige grant.

I've still got the CoH and CoV fansite kits.

I remember Joe Schott's Hero Planner.

I remember all the cool things that have been created to customize the game (binds, map overlays, icon fixes and overlays, SG beacons with text, CoinBGone, etc.)

I remember promising Mid's that I'd pay someone to develop a hero planner that would take into account the IO system.

I remember using PayPal to send money to Mid's, City Info Terminal and the Titan network.

I remember the costume contest where you had to dress up like your in-game hero and get a picture taken in a public place.

    I remember the video contests.

I remember the CoH CCG. I remember HeroMadness. I remember that you could create your own hero and use them in the game. I remember the Father's Day where my daughter made and printed out and put into sleeves 5 of my heroes and 5 of my villains.

I remember the CoH RPG demo.

I remember the "Win a TT Gaming session with Positron" contest.

I remember creating the "Victory Badges" global chat channel the day Issue 3 launched.

I remember promoting my first mods to VB.

I remember DC asking if could rejoin VB and asking what the criteria for becoming a moderator were.

I remember getting the CoH comic in the mail.

I remember I've had to change computers twice and upgrade once because I wanted the game to run better.

I remember my joy when they finally developed LIVE character transfers. I remember budgeting myself to one transfer or one rename per week. I remember having to write down which characters were being transferred where and what order I had to do it in to make the moves possible (oh, the days of 8-12 character slots).

I remember giggling the first time I read the Ascendant phone calls.

I remember the oddness of Kill Skuls and Gone to the Americans/Jerk-Hackers both happening the same week.

I remember the Ghost Widow files that were teasers for CoV.

I remember all the CoV-beta NDA players giggling at the non-beta players when they were making speculations about Siren's Call news article.

I remember dominating in Siren's Call during pre-launch because there were no heroes connected yet.

I remember 7 tries (Sunday night at 10 pm, week after week) to get Cannonfodder MoSTF.

I remember failing the Eden trial and failing the Eden trial and failing the Eden trial until we finally were able to beat it.

I remember Kraken Hatchling farming in the AST.

    I remember the desktop contest.

I remember the CoH Calendar desktops.

I remember the CoH motivational posters.

I remember teaming with people just so I could look around their base.

I remember the community's discontent that we didn't get capes at launch.

I remember how psyched everyone was for trenchcoats and wings from the Veteran Rewards Program.

I remember the first time I tried to moderate VB by silencing someone and how badly that went. I remember the evolution of the current moderation guidelines.

I still think the best videos done from CoH are: SP's Issue 12 teaser! (love the Spider-Man music), the beta Dropship take down, Word-Up, Daydream and the one SP had to remove because of music copyright issues.

    I remember ShreckSilver's Hero Builder.

I remember having the theory that no one else was actually playing CoH except me and that all the "players" were just AI. I did this becuase I'd never physically met any other players of COH (except my ex, and I think she'd pretend to be in on it just to jerk my chain). I finally abandoned this theory when I finally met someone else who played 4 years after launch.

I remember getting scared when someone followed me for several miles and then pulled into the parking lot with their Big-'Ol-Truck and blocked me in. I remember feeling weirded-out when the driver told me he was St0ny from the Titan Network and was following me to ask about my plates (COH FAN).

As you can tell, I could keep going on and on and on. This game has been inhabiting my mind from 2003-2012. I'm somewhat invested.

    Dear Santa,

What I really want for Christmas is to continue playing City of Heroes. The meanie NCSoft is taking it away from me.

I've always followed and played CoH, since I was a little tyke in 2003. I've never stopped playing with this toy Santa!

My mommy and daddy have spent more than $1500 to keep playing for more than 8 years. They spent more than $250 in the last year alone!

All my friends play CoH with me. We think it's the best game on the playground! No matter what other game we play, we always go back to playing CoH. WE JUST LOVE IT!!!

I've been a good boy all decade Santa. Please don't give me coal. :(

[I'm 39, I've paid and played every month since early beta. I'm passionate about the game. The community is... *sniff* -the best any hero could ever hope to be a part of.]

    {{Did you hear about the dyslexic devil-worshipper? He sold his soul to Santa. :) }}
  5. First, thank you Titan Network.

Second, I fully support any and all efforts to continue playing and supporting CoH by anyone and everyone.

Third, like many others, I don't want to see this community stopped in any way.

Finally, I'll eagerly contribute money to help fund continuation of this game.

  10. I've got many Mid's IO builds for characters both level 50 and below. They all are built to take advantage set IO's at maximum level, meaning I usually use common IOs until I totally rebuild with a combination of Sets, common IOs and Hami-Os at level 47.

With the addition of Attuned Enhancements (ATOs and Universal Damage), I have opportunity to slot many of these sub-47 characters with some of these Attuned sets.

    My questions are:

In your opinion, how aggressive should I be in trying to acquire attuned enhancements for level sub-47 characters?

In your opinion, should I spend my Inf reserve (approximately 1 billion) on trying to acquire purples/pvp enhancements for my level 50 characters (6 characters) or should I try and outfit my lower level characters (15 characters or so) with the attuned enhancements they can slot immediately?

As needed I can supply Set IO/Attuned builds for characters both at level 50 and characters anywhere from level 14 to 44.

Thank you for your time in consideration of this issue.

    Salvage Inventory Increase

    Price: 800 Paragon Points - 50% = 400 Paragon Points!
Two things I wanted to make you aware of:
    1. Thank you for finally putting these items on sale. I bought $100 worth of Paragon Points and dropped 8000 PP for all the Salvage and Recipe upgrades.
    2. If this had been the price point normally, you wouldn't have had to wait 7.5 months (Sept. 13th 2011-April 25th 2012) for my money. I will gladly pay for things I perceive to be of value. I'll hold onto my money (and even my free stipend!) when I think things are priced too high.
My closed wallet is a very quiet vote that doesn't speak as loudly as spending money. I wanted to give you feedback on a a very specific example of something I've always considered too expensive. I backed up that feedback by spending money to show my commitment to my opinion.

P.S. - I still won't buy the extra enhancement slot trays because I still think they're too expensive (even at 25% off).
  18. Not a Paragon Market item, but the VIP Starter kit is back in the PlayNC store until April 30th for $0.99.
  19. I'll try and say more later but my thoughts are with DC.
  20. Each new alt created/played could use these creating a continual demand for this consumable.

    Enhancement Attuner
    :
    • This piece of salvage and X inf turns any Invention Origin enhancement into an attuned and account-bound version of itself.

I came up with this as I was playing my level 28 Thugs/Poison mastermind. He's got 15-20 level 50 recipes he's saving for when he can craft and slot them at level 47. I was thinking "Wouldn't it be cool if I could make these into SBE versions and slot and use them now?"

He's not the only victim of my "hoard until level 47" mentality. I've got 12 other characters between levels 26-43, each with 10-25 level 50 recipes and salvage to craft those and others. I'd love to be able to enjoy using the invention system sets earlier in the game. I could also use these to make my level 50 characters enable their set bonuses and 'procs' below level 47.

    Downsides:
Discourages players from purchasing serial Invention Licenses. Example: Non-VIP, non-Reward Level 7, player purchases IO License one month, buys Enhancement Attuners for his all his IOs across all his characters, never needs to purchase IO License again to use all those IOs.

The rare IO sets are just now being tested in the Paragon Market environment in limited release. This type of mechanic would allow IOs (including procs and global set bonuses) of all rarity types to use the same rules purple IOs, PvP IOs and SBEs follow. The set bonuses/procs available may be too powerful/game-breaking.

    Upsides:
Makes rare enhancements of all levels valuable. Have you ever gotten a great recipe drop while on a TF and then been bummed because it's level 35 instead of 50? Craft it and attune it. This might make lower level recipes more valuable since they cost less to craft and usually have less expensive salvage ingredients.

Permanently removes items from Auction House. Short term, this could drive in-game economy costs up slightly. Long-term, I think it could further reduce the RMT presence (fewer volatiles available through inf).

Inf sink. Each attunement use could cost ~100,000 inf. That doesn't seem like much, but 90-ish slots per character at level 50 times X characters times X accounts. There's trillions of inf in the game and this could be one more way to remove it.

Proposed Cost: 400-ish Paragon Points to completely convert one level 50 character to SBEs.
First, these items are going to be quantity purchases. Secondly, there's going to be a requirement to use in-game currency. Third, they could be added to the Paragon Rewards Tree either on a branch, or as Tier 9 repeatable rewards. Fourth, this price point equates with one month's worth of VIP points. Finally, many players may choose to cherry-pick which enhancements to attune if the initial price point is too high and perceived value is too low.

    Thoughts?
  21. Even if this is not immediately implemented, I agree the move towards this type of hybrid model is a better option for the game.

    Dev Digest

Been getting a broken code page the last few days. Broken for anyone else?
  23. One of the SG's I'm part of also got the full wipe which you saw in another thread.

We got a copy of our base back, no prestige restoration (13 million prestige *POOF!*) and we've been told we have to reset everything else manually including coalitions.

    What has happened with yours?
