Wow what an absolutely hateful reply.

[/ QUOTE ]

Not much hate there. Disdain? Sure. Lack of respect for your position? Loads. A basic belief that everything you say indicates both a lack of awareness of what anime and manga are and a willingness to aggressively promote your ignorance? Absolutely.

[ QUOTE ]
I'm the troll though. Don't forget. I'm the one making confrontational statements and trolling.

[/ QUOTE ]

I didn't say that, but now that you mention it, I would say you've been trollish.

[ QUOTE ]
Irony at its fullest.

[/ QUOTE ]

Even if I did say anything trollish - which I did not - I did not accuse you of trolling. Even if I did, and I posted something trollish, that would not be ironic.

[ QUOTE ]
I'm glad you like anime. I don't have much use for it. I've seen some series that I like...I've seen others that I don't.

[/ QUOTE ]

Now here's a wacky generalization. I like some series that I've seen, and I don't like others that I've seen. I can tell the difference between a product, a medium, and a genre.

[ QUOTE ]
If I wanted to play an anime game I'd play Ragnarok Online. I'm not down on it because its alien. I'm down on it because it adds nothing to this game in my opinion.

[/ QUOTE ]

Because the only things that should ever be added to the game are things you personally want to use. Also, the addition of elements influenced by something necessarily means that the game then becomes that something. You're committing some kind of fallacy of contamination here. Having costume elements inspired by some anime characters won't make City of Heroes an anime-inspired game, and won't make all the characters into anime-inspired characters. We already have anime-inspired and direct ripoff characters running around. I saw clones from Dragonball Z and Inuyasha On my very first day playing this game. You're taking the addition of new elements and inflating the consequence to "It will change the very character of the game!" and then expecting anyone to take you at all seriously.

[ QUOTE ]
Like I need more half naked school girls and cat girls running around in the game. I've already got enough of those to make me literally ill considering the fact that I know pretty much all of them are men. This is somehow a positive thing?

[/ QUOTE ]

Which? Making you ill? Conflating schoolgirls and catgirls with all anime ever? Worrying needlessly about whether female characters are played by men?

The ability to have more costume variety? Yes, it's a good thing. People playing catgirls? Yes, that's a good thing if they're having fun. Men playing female characters? Great. It's better than the jerk hackers who whine about it happening at all.

Also, the only schoolgirl I have ever teamed with (Katana/SR scrapper) actually was played by a straight woman. One of the two or three catgirl characters I have ever teamed with is played by a [censored] man. I doubt either was doing it to get any jollies.

[ QUOTE ]
Maybe to you. And I'm not saying you're predisposed to furries and carefully androgenous sexy heros either. I don't presume to know you.

[/ QUOTE ]

Well, at this stage I'm pretty well-disposed to anything that'll make you feel ill, given your rundown of what makes you feel ill.

[ QUOTE ]
But you sure seem to have no problem doing that to me.

[/ QUOTE ]

I only presume to go by what you've posted in this very thread.

[ QUOTE ]
You are a hateful person Kali. You've never said anything nice in response to anything I've posted. You take disagreement personally. And I'd appreciate it if you just kept out of my posts from here on out.

[/ QUOTE ]

Yay, obligatory ad hominem.

I don't even remember having any conversations with you before. Are you sure you're not thinking of someone else?

Anyway, no, I have no plans to censor my reactions. If you keep posting the stupid, I'll keep saying, "Hey, you're posting the stupid."

I'm not sure if you're responding to my post, as my post has nothing to do with "what is true anime and what is not." In fact, I'm pretty sure no post in this thread covers that topic.

My own post was an expression of disbelief that the inclusion of anime elements in City of Heroes would somehow turn it into an anime game.

You know, one of the most popular superhero television shows of all time is currently on the air, and in its latest incarnation, has a cat girl. Would it really be positive to prevent people from being like the characters from TV superhero shows?

As an anime fan boi i would like to have the following options for costume:
basket ball shirts , (Shohoku forever!!!)

a Gakuran style school jacket (yay! for school thugs/guardians)

yakuza style hair cuts

boxing gloves (comeon ippo fans)

hmmm maybe combine all these to create a evil Fan-boi monsterhttp://boards.cityofheroes.co...icons/grin.gif

I've said several times in this post that there is a section of the current community that would benefit from an all anime costume update. I'm just saying that that style translates more largely to the asian market and would make CoH, overall, more acceptable in them.

Yes there are people currently playing that will heavily enjoy the anime style. I have not, at any point, denied that. All I'm saying is that theres also people that currently play that have no interest in it and it leaves them with nothing gained.

[/ QUOTE ]

Is there anything the devs could add for which this is *not* true? Is there any *set* of things the devs could add for which this would not be true? I'm not likely to jump at the chance to outfit my characters with "anime-inspired" costume options, but you never know. Heck, think about the huge amount of dev time that went into capes. That was a ton of effort that did not in any way benefit the players that did not want a cape.

Heck, if the "anime-inspired" costume options have even two sets of female shoes that aren't butt-ugly, leather options that aren't "Leather Goddess of Phobos" leather, and maybe some additional top accessories that aren't somewhat S&M or packing ammo, they'll have quadrupled the number of options right there. Maybe an anime/asian influence will add something that looks more like a martial arts gi, also, and even western-taste players might appreciate that. Personally, I'm hoping that they improve the tops-with-skin "aka tops-painted-on" section, to include things real people might actually wear without significant amounts of adhesive tape.

Now, I'll tell you what will really disappoint me. They say they are adding a sonic weapon power set and a staff powerset. I'll lay 10 to 1 odds I wont see a bowel disruptor, or The Chair Leg of Truth in either one. Sad.

Actually /em kneel is marginally better, but both are still making me sit down like a guy would, and are still making me flash the room.

Devs, if you are by any chance reading this ... when girls sit down there is no risk of anything getting wedged in, so in general we tend to sit down with our legs closed. Especially so if we're wearing a skirt shorter than knee length... I am sure this is an extremely minor change that could be made to the one or two sit poses.
Pretty please? *making extra big, cute girly anime style eyes*

I dunno about better sitting positions, lots of us have been begging for that for a long time. But, in keeping with "anime-inspired" additions in U4, I vote for /em making-extra-big-cute-girly-anime-style-eyes. Not that my scrapper would ever stoop to doing that. Heavens no.

She already has a ton of influence already. Now, my peacebringer...

They've got capes animated, trench coats wouldn't be much harder.

But ensuring people aren't wearing half their trench in their pants is another issue entirely.

[/ QUOTE ]

Trenchcoats probably have a similar problem as long flowing skirts, a problem that capes do not have. Think MA.

Actually, I was going to ask about this anime / manga stuff. For those of us that aren't into that stuff and are completely unfamiliar with it, we have no idea what these costume options could entail. I know nothing about anime except that Sailor Moon seems to be a popular title in the genre. I'm excited that we're getting more costume choices, but beyond that what lies ahead is a mystery to me.

Chris

[/ QUOTE ]

A bit of an educated guess here for you.
When statesman says "anime inspired" he means done by outside NCsoft Korean artists and not the american cryptic ones. Thus there is a very good chance alot of this is going to be normal costume stuff just done with a different artistic style.

Form over Fucntion is the big thing in anime.
It has to look cool first and who cares if no real person would wear that.

Mostly anime outfits are either fairly baggy, or very sleek lines.
Expect large shoulder/Knee pads, greeves and bracers. Also expect too see ninja outfits, kimonos(sp), karate outfits, and a good chance of SWAT gear, especially all the little detail stuff like goggles and harnesses. Jackets (if they are in) are also a definate possiblity for asian super heros love jackets. Lastly expect anything that might look good no matter how impractical wearing such an item might be(like a baggy leather vest) .

Assuming the artists in Korean know they are "suppose" to be doing some sterotypical anime stuff also expect school uniforms(guys: nice dress pants, and a high collared longs sleeve shirt, girls: short skirts, high socks, baggy blouse and sailor collar) and Hair LOTS of wacky hair.

Its rather hard to nail down what anime is going to mean, because unless the artist are suppose to be making stereotypical anime fashions (very unlikely) then anime is just a slightly different and very well done style of animation.

I am just hoping I can get a big floppy Vampire Hunter D hat. With the big feather in it that would be so sweet.

PS:
Oh yeah and Go hunt kill Skuls

Excellent description of the anime costume aesthetic. This is why the new options should appeal to a wide audience.

More info on digital hair!

This is a quote directly from a friend who does 3D modeling for a living. He even played this game for a short time, but doesn't plan to ever come back. Copy and pasted from an instant message for accuracy. Please remember that he does this stuff for a living.

Him> What I should have mentioned, is 3d hair is incredibly easy to make, and hard to style. It depends what form you make work with.

Me> What do you mean exactly?

Him> There's two forms of 3d hair. One which is a prop, an object that's posable and easy to work with but which is comprised of one big object which looks like a hairdo. Or you can make every strand individually and style it that way. The latter is better, it can give impressive results. Like be animated to blow in the wind. But it's hard to style.

Well! There you have it folks! Now we know a little more about what goes on behind the scenes. If anyone has any 3D modeling questions I would be happy to pass them on.

Edit: Apparently both techniques are still "not easy", but the first way is slightly easier to style.

[/ QUOTE ]

Actually there's a 3rd way. You'd build a base 'style' with a few seperate wire frames of 'locks' which can be animated. It's really a great way to make anime style hair but not as realistic as the seperate strand types. When there is moving hair in COH I bet it'll be this 3rd way or a combination of the second and third.
