Regarding the anime costumes debate that is.

You take a fairly divisive issue like adding anime costume options.

You get people that are not very pleased with the idea and say so.

And almost everyone that responds in support of the idea has an avatar from an anime series.

"Oh just have some faith, you might like it." "Oh you just haven't seen good anime."

Blah blah blah. I mean really, I've been hearing this style of argument since I was like....4 and I didn't like asparagus and my grandmother assured me that I'd like it if I just tried it.

So I guess what I'm saying here is its great that some people are getting what they want. But the whole "Just try it, you'll like it" argument isn't very fair. Its 25 years later and I still don't like asparagus yanno.

Its not very considerate to tell people that they're "lucky to be getting anything at all." when your greatest wish has been granted.

Its sort of like gloating. Really.

Anyways, back to the game.

I like anime and asparagus. Neither graces my avatar at the moment.

Besides, exactly what's coming is still a big mystery at the moment. I know there are a couple of options I'm really hoping are in there.

Even though I love anime, I prolly wouldn't wear any of the costumes due to the fact that I like my charas to look comic-like rather than anime. But I'm not against it. I think it's a great idea.

Well Statesman's already confirmed that theres no trenchcoat that its still in the que.

I begin to wonder what "latest styles from all around the world" really means. First they say "anime inspired costume options", then they say "latest styles from all around the world"...and then they say "no trenchcoat, still in the que."

Uh okay. So this update is basically all anime then. And latest styles from all around the world include...karate gi and school girl outfits. Why not just say that so those of us that aren't getting anything we'd use know ahead of time?

Who cares?

New costumes = good thing

If you don't like them, don't use them.

I think you're quite missing the point.

I personally have been waiting for new costume options since release. I'm dying to use new costume options.

So, we get a bunch of anime stuff, which I'm sure will make a section of the community desperately happy, and then we're off into heavy CoV development time.

I mean thats the time table. You folks aren't really looking at their development time table.

Its been a year since we had new costumes. If in a year, we only get a bunch of stuff I won't use...I have effectively not gotten anything I'd use after waiting a year.

And do you really think theres going to be a serious content update after Issue 4 before CoV releases? I doubt it seriously. Cryptic is a small house. They'll need the spring and summer to do some serious crunch time to make sure they meet their projected CoV release date.

Issue 5, in my opinion..is a long way off, somewhere around next January.

So Issue 4 is technically the last free update we'll see til after CoV is live.

So once again, I'm just saying, new costume options have been in the top 5 of my wish list for a long time. If we don't get anything I'd use...it means I potentially won't get anything until CoV or even 2006.

Thats bad news man. Seriously. Anime costume options helps a section of the player base. Not the entire player base. Its like free content for a certain genre of fan and thats it.

gonna have to go with the man in the paper bag here ....the only way I could consider the costume changes naysayers having any sort of viable complaint is if they were taking out some of the costume options we already have .... they basically just giving us more ...for nothing ... we have done nothing to deserve this magnamanious gesture on theyre part ...they are simply "GIVING" us more options to use as we will or won't ....and for the haters ....

What a load of crap. Exuse me, but it is.

How many times must it be stated in large golden capital letters that THE TEAM THAT'S MAKING COH IS NOT THE TEAM MAKING COV AND THE LAUNCH OF COV WILL NOT MEAN LESS ATTENTION FOR COH

There, it's been said YET AGAIN.

A bunch of stuff you won't use? Gee, I don't like Kheldians. Does that mean "teh ski is falling" because in almost a year I have not gotten one extra AT I can use? No, it means I'm picky and I don't like it. Tough for me. You don't like costume choices you haven't even seen? Tough for you. If you care to explain to the general public exactly what you don't like in anime-inspired costume options, that would be very helpful. Personally, I'd love to have some more armoured options, some better looking boots, some more types of glasses, more shoulder pads, some kimonos and tunics and such. What's so bad about that? Oh, right, you wanted trenchcoats. Well, I wanted trenchcoats, and full capes, and backpacks, and jetpacks and wings, and helmets with opaque glass, and tails that move, and extra arms, or even some shin-high boots. Well, we're getting something which we haven't seen yet. I for one am happy. And if I have to choose between getting anime-costumes and getting zilch, I choose anime.

So you're saying they don't have to give us anything? I sort of disagree on that part, it was pretty much a stated goal of the development team, even before CoH went live, that the game would constantly recieve new content for free, except major expansions. In fact I remember an interview where "regular content updates" were compared with EQ expansions and that the only time a player would have to pay for a content update would be if a major game changing expansion was released (I.E. CoV).

So if they don't give us anything at all, they're not living up to their guarantee.

And if they only give us things that a certain section of the community can use, they're not living up to it either.

I mean I can understand that its nice to get anything. Its nice that they do content updates for free. The problem is...how do you go for a year, collecting forum data, looking at the frequency of requests for new costumes...and then take a year to add anything..and then add something that only say...a third (just a number, no facts there, just using it for hypothetical purposes) of the community wants?

I'm not saying "no anime plz", I'm saying "anime is fine, but could we have some non-anime stuff too? sort of like alot of people have been asking about since the first update?"

I mean really, this "You're lucky you get anything" mindset isn't very realistic, given the broad guarantees of free new content for the life of the game.

And yes I realize that that means that maybe, someday, we'll get new costume options that everyone will be happy with. But like I surmised, do you really want to wait til 2006 for them?

CoV is a long, long way off still. Like, I'm thinking Fall '05 here. They won't even start beta testing til May at the earliest, if that bit about 12-month players actually means something. We'll get I4 beginning of Spring, I5 beginning of Summer, the CoV/I6 depending on how long that takes.

Unless you're saying there will be no Issues from March til next Janurary, in which case, damn, you're pessimistic.

I find it hard to believe someone would find nothing that they don't like in the new selection of costumes. Just because they're anime inspired isn't a reason to hate it all from the off. As someone else has said in another thread, anime is as broad a genre as Hollywood movies. Everyone's aware of the sterotypical schoolgirl uniform and huge mecha suits, and I fear that's all most people are expecting. But anime styles go beyond that.
Personally, I'll just be happy with anything they provide, seeing as we don't have to pay anything extra for it

Out of interest... have we seen what exactly these new costume updates are?

Largely because I'm wondering if it's possible to think of them not as "anime costumes" but as "new costumes".

I only remember seeing that Chinese shirt, which I believe is not anime-exclusive.

Hello, detectives people. They have the friggin' fedora and the suit in game already, we're just missing that once crucial piece of clothing that I get the sad feeling we won't see for another 6 months.

But I guess we get schoolgirl uniforms and Tsoo outfits. Yay...

Proof please. This is the first time I've seen that statement in "LARGE GOLD CAPITAL LETTERS" and you made it, so I'd prefer to see colloborative posts supporting it. I rather think the people making CoV are the same team that made CoH. Because Cryptic is not SOE and they do not have a large warehouse of slave developers they can spread the work around to.

Well, there's the dev's objection, which goes something along the lines of "Hell To Animate".

I could be wrong.

I'll agree that we haven't seen enough yet. And to be totally frank we can't make a final judgement until the product is released.

The chinese formal shirt we've seen is just that, technically anime inspired...not exactly something even the Chinese wear today beyond traditional occasions...and not generally very heroic except when last seen in 5 Dragon Heroes of Wu Chen Lai...in a dubbed kung fu movie on the USA channel.

What I think I'm confused about is CoH has had a year of heavy support from the US fanbase. And we've asked about new costumes since release. And what its looking like is the only new costumes we're going to get are to ingratiate the game with a potential customer base that the company hasn't even tapped yet...but plans to soon.

I mean who are they really rewarding there except themselves? Sure an anime style, or eastern style might benefit a certain type of western fan, or a few currently played katana and martial arts scrappers. But if what we've seen is the weathervane of what is in total...then this costume update isn't about rewarding us at all...its about exploiting a new market and thats it.

And thats sad. A whole year of people clamoring for more costumes...and what we're seeing isn't what we wanted.

Its sort of like getting the wal-mart bike at X-Mas because Dad spent too much money at the casino and had to scrimp to even get that. Sure the wal-mart bike looks like a bike, rides like a bike...but its not the bike you wanted.

Anyways I'm not trying to tell anyone they're wrong, or that they shouldn't like the idea of anime costumes...I'm just trying to point out that new costumes have been pretty high on the wish list for a long time and they've mostly been ignored, and for all intents and purposes..they're still being ignored.

These costume updates aren't for us. They're for Cryptic's sales numbers.

Not so much hell to animate as they are hard to incorporate into current meshes without clipping issues.

They've got capes animated, trench coats wouldn't be much harder.

But ensuring people aren't wearing half their trench in their pants is another issue entirely.

I wouldn't say a Chinese formal shirt like that is "anime-inspired", largely because anime isn't Chinese.

Then again, I'm not an American anyway, so what do I know.

Trenchcoats will probably be made available once we have enough level 50s willing to stand around (possibly in Atlas Park) rooted to the spot.

Occasionally they might even interact with the newbies, and give them the Trenchcoat Task Force.

I hate anime, but I'm looking forward to the "Eastern" style costumes that were lacking in the game before. However, I don't think that all the new costume options will be entirely anime inspired. I'm hoping to see some non-anime costume options thrown into the mix as well.

I won't lie to you, I don't have any red name post to prove it. But unless you call me a liar, I'm teling you that I've seen red names say that thing on at least 2 separate occasions, and I don't come to the boards that often, nor do I read long threads.

You can believe me if you like. I have nothing to gain or lose by covinving you or not. I'm perfectly calm myself, because I KNOW CoV will not steal from CoH's developement. Maybe just Statesman's post would somewhat decreas.

Honestly, I was expecting that was something everybody knew.

I am hoping this as well. I'm just speculating against the worst case scenario is all.

They did say something about "world fashion". Personally, I'd like nemesis and council uniforms. Now that they're not nazi, there's no shame in dressing like them. Also, I like the backpacks of Crey and Malta, and I hope we get something like this if they're revamping the ceator as it appears.
