As was said lower down, if I can't play the character I want on the server I want, then to me, the entire game is in downtime, because I don't want "the entire game," I want that specific character on that specific server.
I see it as akin to how I personally also don't particularly want to play all of the game. If I don't want to team, or PVP, or play with prices on the Market, then I can hardly throw stones at those who don't want to leave their home server.

To be honest, all I'm hoping for is that the next time I ask why a sudden unannounced maintenance during my prime time (I don't actually have a problem with downtime, but unannounced and un-updated downtime is irritating), people get where I'm coming from when I express annoyance.

If I can let people rant and complain while this downtime affects them, surely they can let me rant and complain while other downtimes affect me.

Sadly I don't quite have the disposable cash at the moment to buy HR, but I do have Chantelise, which I suppose means I'm in before the Talking About Other Video Games lock.

  5. With the state of the game as of now, is there a substantial benefit to still having Security Chief missions?

Do they provide a useful function for new players? Or old, or returning players? Would anyone miss them if they're gone?

I was pondering this as I scoured Founders Falls for 40 Crey, which is as many as four tens. I did not manage to come up with an answer.

  9. I have to admit to curiosity on just what exactly was in the patch.

The maintenance announcement post says that there will be no patch notes since it's just a general maintenance, but something got patched, and I kind of want to know what, in a nosy busy-body kind of way.

I know it's probably going to be something like "improved general performance", but still. Even that much would be good to know.
  10. I am posting mainly to check that my timezone conversions are at least relatively accurate, despite today's Live Server Maintenance announcement post stating that it should have been done about fifteen minutes ago.
  11. Not so much for the game, but certainly for the forums, and in two very, very different ways, Pilcrow and UncleBob.

I can imagine a huge difference between someone who teams all the time on large fast-moving teams, and someone who solos all the time like me. My fastest time-to-50 was somewhere just above 100 hours (and felt "holy crap that was fast this character is awesome"), and I've heard that that is somehow slow.

Especially since I can imagine a rush of transactions from even just VIP players alone on the Paragon Market for points to buy stuff with.

Along with the accompanying credit card problems, of course. I can't even imagine how frustrating it would be to get a hold/lock on your card due to suspicious activity or something (or, based on past experiences, for being from outside the US).

    Server downtime

Did the downtime announcement mention how long it was going to be? I just got home from work and it's a little annoying to see that the servers are down.

Also, way back when, origins mattered in terms of which contacts you should run in order to gain access to non-Power 10 SOs or DOs. You could obviously run all of them if you wanted to, but people tended to gravitate towards the ones selling their own origins first.

EDIT: I should add that I personally think Origins as a game mechanic is pretty vestigial now. There are the neat little things like the Origins of Power series and the Well, and I have no objection to it remaining a cosmetic part of the character, but other than that...

I generally go by the little icons orbiting around the critter. Dark red triangle-things pointing down means less damage, dark purple shields means less defense...

The problem is the same one that having debuff messages would have: after a certain point, there's just too much, and the feedback gets lost in the noise.
  18. About the most I've been able to decide about Casual vs Hardcore is that it's not a single line with "Casual" on one end and "Hardcore" on the other and most people in between. The initial metric of investment into the game may already be skewed in that we're already playing this game, which requires a monthly subscription and enough tech knowledge to install and play. (Which differentiates it from, say, a browser game.)

The term which really made me think was "casual raider". Which seems like a contradiction at first, since by the time you're raiding (Mothership or Hamidon, although I heard it first with regards to the Hamidon), I'm not sure you could be said to be "casual"... except I think the term does describe an existing type of player, who joins in these raids only occasionally, without a mind towards regularly pumping every advantage they can from its rewards. The Hamidon Origin might be useful for them, and it's a nice reward that they appreciate, but they don't think about HO-ing out their build (or at least IOs supplemented by HOs) in the most efficient way possible.

And yet, efficiency might not be the determining factor either, since we also have "casual RP" and "casual socializing", which are different things: costume contests might fit the latter without fitting the former, for instance. Having a "casual X" term for a given activity implies a "hardcore X", which may or may not actually exist due to demographics, but is at least plausible and reasonable.

I think that's because mostly I hear "need damage" or "need DPS", rather than "need Scrappers" specifically. The request is for the role, not the archetype.

(There's also "need ranged damage", but I don't see that as often as just plain "damage". And oddly, I don't hear "need tanks" much.)

There's no immediate feedback, no orange text flying up over people's heads to tell you what you just did! You just have to take the game's word for it that, yes, you are aiding the team.
A lot of debuffs and buffs are displayed through the graphical effects on a character, which lingers longer (sometimes a lot longer, sometimes only slightly) than the power activation itself. If I see a critter with some kind of cloud miasma around them, I know they've been debuffed in some way. If they have little dark accuracy icons orbiting them, that's a ToHit Debuff. If it's a bright accuracy icon, it's a ToHit Buff.

I would assume that having orange text for every effect would quickly get unwieldy.

Also I learned to blog by manually updating a page on my Geocities website, but I still welcome Wordpress and Livejournal and whatnot.

I see the question as more of whether it is too inconvenient. Not "can you figure it out" in the sense of ability, but more "do you want to bother figuring it out". While I know there will be accusations of "dumbing it down", I have to say I welcome further dumbing down, because it does make things easier for me as well.

I mean, I prefer the current system of D&D to, say, THAC0.
  22. It's solo-friendly. It doesn't need me to keep track of a great many variables in order to be considered "good" at the game.

And even until now, I have yet to receive any sort of suggestion on a single-player game that has most of what I like about this game, so I'll be staying on despite the incessant questioning of why I'm playing a MMOG to solo.

    Irony Much?

This is indeed highly ridiculous. I certainly hope that fixing the store, or at least the support system that tells us why we're having problems and how to fix it, is top priority for NCSoft.

As a customer in Asia, I've gone through the same frustrating thing.

Not your post, but the OP.

I've been more or less out of touch due to various commitments and problems with NCSoft billing, and the usage of the phrase "fed up" indicates some form of ill-feeling.

I also understand the OP is more than a month old by now.
