To Positron and the devs (even Jack!)
I didn't play MMOs, until this game came along.
The long version, from the first/main thread.
Thanks.

To the devs:
Thank you, and I'm so sorry. As a player, I know I'm not alone in feeling utterly sick at the news of our long running community being shattered. But for you, you've lost your jobs and your visions. I dearly hope that you're able to find a place that you can bring as much joy to people as you've done over the past years.
I've played since issue 2, and have seen a lot happen since then. For a while, it seemed standard fare for an MMO. It was fun. There were nerfs as things were adjusted... new areas added... new mission, even an expansion that let you be evil! As the Issues continued to roll out, however, I was amazed to see more and more content that wasn't exactly original... it was being conceived entirely by your player base, in the forums, in the chats, and in the training room (Beta server). I saw the positron task force, a long, very tedious and infuriating set of missions, broken into two sets of very fun, fast paced, and exciting missions. I saw the incarnate system... a completely new endgame system that was both fun and easily accessible. And the powersets... I don't think one has come out in recent memory that wasn't directly asked for by the community! Staff fighting, dual pistols, nature affinity, darkness control, water blasting, street fighting!
More than any other game that I've ever played, you gave us what we wanted... you let us help shape the future of a gaming community into something fun and welcoming. You gave us a game created by a the very community that so loved it, and for that, thank you.

Thank you for the years of enjoyment and distraction I found in this game. I will miss it.

Just to rub salt in the wound, my desktop's HD was dying (judging from the noise it was making during drive activity) so I installed a new one. Now the system won't even POST and I can't figure out why. I'll have another stab at it in the morning but it just sucks not being able to log in now.

New problem: WinXP CD not recognized. My DVD-R drives stopped recognizing CDs a while ago; I was convinced this was a registry problem I couldn't track down. This was part of the reason why I wanted to re-install Windows. Seems that there's something else afoot. I'll probably solve this by replacing one or both drives in the morning.

I do hope that Positron and the writers can answer our questions next week.
(And would it be too much to ask that Zwil be invited, too? I feel like the Community Coffee Talks need a wrap up session. I loved those things.)
Filling out one of the petitions to stop CoH being shutdown really helped me distill my feelings about CoH to this: This my first and favorite MMORPG. No other supers-based, fantasy, or sci-fi MMORPG has come close to matching how much I enjoy playing it and being a part of its community.
But still I fear and still I dare not laugh at the madman!

A Belated Thanks -
A few years ago, you guys gave one of your employees (then) Phil a box of City of Heroes stuff for a child with a heart condition that he had met through his girlfriend (now wife). We barely knew Phil, and only met him through his girlfriend because my husband mentioned our whole family played, and that our son had a serious and life threatening heart condition. Phil decided, without having met us, that he wanted to do something for my kiddo, a CoH fan with some struggles. We first met him met him the night he came over with books and heroclicks (I spelled that wrong, I bet), and the cape apparently snatched right off of Lord Recluse in the Austin office - Phil coming over to answer questions because he worked for CoH was a surprise holiday present for our son, the box of stuff (and the Arachnos cape and autographed posters and books) completely unexpected and we were shocked. Phil and his wife became part of the family, and the box of stuff was so sweet, and we were so touched. Thanks for doing that, whoever else was part of it. The day before his open heart surgery last year, he was in a wheelchair because he was too weak to walk around a museum. The last thing that he wore before going into the hospital was his Freem shirt: Thank you guys so much. Thanks for the box of stuff, and thanks for creating a game that helped take his mind off the hospital, the pain, and all the crap that he was going through (and thanks for making it work on a dinky laptop, which is all we had in ICU). Thanks for being the first MMO I could take my kid to without worrying that people would be horrible to him. You guys made a difference. Thanks. |
Thank you Devs, new and old so much for:
The fun times as a newbie in Atlas park.
Finally soloing the original Posi TF after hours and hours of playing with my dark/rad defender.
The super-fun halloween events (No other MMO has come close).
They fab way the rikti invasion made me feel whether I was lv 1 or 50.
Thank you for all the hateful PVP (LOL).
And In general I HATE PVP but I LOVED Recluse's victory. I loved beta playing on the test server and having fun at team pvp no matter how much I died.
I remember being called and "inspiration monkey" and vowing to get even with stalkers!
I loved getting badges and tweaks
And I loved killing named villains in RV with the whole server on virtue.
In short no other MMO will ever be the same. The company really screwed the pooch on this one, but in the end they only hurt themselves. We the players will always remember the GAME with fondness and have nothing but respect and admiration for the Devs past and present.
Goodnight CoX. You were a good friend to the end.
I'd also like to say thank you to the current development and community teams, and to all the ones that came before I started whose names I only heard in passing. Without each and every one of you this game wouldn't have been as enormously awesome as it has been. Yeah, even you Skippy Sidekick. No scratch that... that goes double for someone who's willing to let his official name be "Skippy Sidekick".
- Thank you for the countless hours of enjoyment beating up fearsome foes and giant monsters. - Thank you for the countless hours of distraction from real life stuff that sucked monumentally. - Thank you for having multiple varieties of giant robots. Those are always frickin' cool. - Thank you for inspiring the players to make things as solid and cool as Mids, Vidiotmaps, and ParagonWiki (among others). - Thank you for inspiring Steelclaw to make all those lists. - Thank you for almost exclusively attracting the type of players that I'm more than happy to talk to and spend time around. - Thank you for the players I've met here that I've since become good and lasting friends with. - Thank you for a game where I could be around whole crowds of other people and still play on my own when I needed to. - Thank you for not making me need hardcore skills to get ahead or have fun. Cause I don't have those. Seriously, not a one. - Thank you for a game where a costume contest can be both a challenge and a joy. - Thank you for inspiring me to actually post on forums. That was out of the question for me once upon a time; too shy. - Thank you specifically to Avatea for my complete and utter inability to say "purple" anymore. I can now only pronounce it "puh-pull". But most of all... and I mean this from the bottom of my heart... Thank you for letting me be a hero. Even if it was only for a while. I wish all of you the best wherever you end up next. And if you do somehow let us know where that is, I'll be sure and check out those projects. Cause hey, it'll already have a big advantage by having one of you guys on it. Stay safe out there, heroes! Now that Claws has vented his rage (Yes, I really feel like Claws and myself are separate people sometimes), I'd like to express my heartfelt thanks for making....
....my second home.
....my refuge from the world.
....the place I could let my imagination run rampant.
....the place where I met the woman who changed my life forever.
....and most importantly, the place that proved to me beyond any doubt that heroes DO exist, they just seldom take the form you expect them to.

This is by far the best game I've ever played, and I've played several
DDO has no support - there's problems and they dont' care to fix it
FlyFF - About the same, You get to ride flying things at lvl 20 but the grinding was so absurd that I never even got there.
WoW - yes. Wow is pretty and there's always something to do, but the community is absolute crap. There's netiquette that even someone who's never played before is expected to know and no one teaches it.
There's more but this illustrates a point.
This game is beautiful, fun, friendly, and even the developers get in on the community.
This game is my relaxation time. I actually need just a little time to myself each week or I'm no fun to play with on my pen-and-paper games. This is where I got it.
I was devestated when I heard about this. But the game lasted longer then I would have thought it would last but I enjoyed it all the more since issue 2.
So, I agree with all the other posters: Thank you for your hard work and good luck finding an even better job.
And Possi, I hold you to your promiss to tell us what plotlines we will sadly never see.
I am flabbergasted. Reading the news that CoX is being shut down is like hearing someone I know died. Everything must have an end, but this is violent death... but what to do, I can only thank the devs current and past (and even Jack) for creating this game, and my fellow players for making the special memories of this electronic world.

Also, I've thought of a couple other thankses I'd like to put out there.
- Thank you for inspiring Samuraiko to make all those videos.
- Thank you for inspiring Chad to make his market listing thread and spreadsheet.
- Thank you for inspiring Von Krieger to do those coffee talk write-ups. Others have tried but, no offense, they couldn't hold a candle.
- Thank you for inspiring every player who ever took the time out to write a guide. The ones I read were invaluable and taught me a lot. Like "How to suck at CoH/CoV".
- Thank you for inspiring the Taxibots. I never met them, but their legacy will live forever.
- Thank you for all the minor bugfixes, the ones that next to nobody reported or seemed to care about. A few people really, really, really loved that you cared enough, even if it took a while sometimes.
And finally, thank you to all the players who ever went out of their way to do something for other people. Whether that be exhaustive beta testing, software utilities, map overlays, icon fixes, wiki entries, guides, videos, lists, spreadsheets, transcriptions, taxi rides, responding to desperate pleas for mission assistance, donating inf to lowbies and newbies, answering questions, holding costume contests and other events, DJ-ing for radio stations, organizing or donating to Real World Hero, or just stepping up to lead a supergroup, trial, or team. The way to tell a hero from a regular person is, heroes do what they do for other people's benefit. And when the situation called for it you guys answered. So on behalf of the people getting that help, thank you for those things you did. We appreciated it.
When this game was first announced, I couldn't see the point? An MMO with superheroes? It'd be like those massive comic book "events", except all the time. Once the NDA was lifted, and folks posted pics and explanations on how the game worked, I was a Launch Day subscriber, all the way... to the end, apparently.
I played the game "seriously", until after Issue 2, which had so many changes which made the game quite hard for a lot of players, but other, more skilled, players would simply shout "Use Tactics!". So much anger on the forums and ingame broadcast nearly led me to cancel... but instead, I opted to switch from "serious" gameplay to "silly". Catgirls, away!
The sheer amount of costumes, power combinations (as well as colors), a place for your own backstory (why don't other games have this?), and the game's lore didn't lock down players into the game's story, but allowed the player to make their own story, their own character, with the official game being the background to it all.
A sense of ownership for your character, not in the legal sense, but in the personal sense, is why I kept coming back to play, even after playing so many other MMOs. Global chat keeping everybody in touch, regardless of the server they're on, this helped build an ingame community.
And this is what will be missed. Even an unofficial fan-server of the game won't have that aspect. The story has ended.
But what a story we had.

I especially appreciate how much the devs have tried to please the players. I remember one regular Tank player whose name escapes me at the moment, but he was a fireman in real life and a strong advocate of the Battle Axe set. He was also one of the most helpful people on the Tank forum. As soon as customizable weapons were added to the game, one of the options was a Fire Axe. One of you guys came on the Forums and said that the Fire Axe was specifically designed for this one player. It was awesome and actually touching to see how much you respected and appreciated one of your players. |

I think I'm still numb right now, as I'm not really reacting.
We all knew this would happen some day, but really did think that was years off. Working for a large corporation, I know how these decisions get made, but I really wanted to drink the Kool-Aid others were passing around.
Thank you to all of the Devs who created and nurtured the best MMO I've seen in 10 years of playing MMO's.
I will miss you all. Thank you to the devs who made it all possible. CoX is what inspired me to go to school for game design. Currently not using that degree, actually writing a novel, but CoX has been a huge part of my life. Thank you for all your devotion, devs.

Thank you for the best gaming years of my life, and if anyone still talks to jack or any of the cryptic team that started this ride and are no longer apart of it tell them THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart.
Lord Marshal. (Infinity Server) signing off.........for good.
.....My name is Paul by the way, and ill miss you all.
I too would like to say thank you. I'm going to miss this game a great deal. You guys did such a fantastic job with, well...everything, but it was the lore and how they were implemented into the game that kept me playing. Every night when we get home from the gym/work/dinner/school my best bud and I log on for an hour or two and play it's how we hang out since we both live in different time zones. There will be other games, sure, but not like this.
If there is anything we can do as a community to keep this game alive, and get you guys back in Paragon Studios, you tell us. Screw what NCSOFT says, find a way even through informal channels and LET US KNOW.
If there isn't, I really hope you guys find jobs quickly, you deserve it all the success in the world.

Hello everyone!.
I am Bio-Flame, an old timer that started playing a few weeks before Issue 1.
DAMN...I haven't posted for like...5 years or so. Time does fly!
My home was the Infinity Server, I used to lead the very first successful Hami raids on my server.
I've since switched to Freedom and Virtue, but my "home" was always Infinity.
I started playing all these years ago. I can't help to reminesce on my memories......
I was finishing Medical School back then and now.... Now I have 8 more years, a soon-to-be fiancee (she doesn't know it yet, don't spoil it!), I am a Neonatologist and I work on an NICU and I love what I do....
Damn, time DOES fly by!
I remember thinking I'd never be a good doctor like my friends/teacher were, and here I am now. I remember thinking that CoH would last...forever. Alas...it would not be the case.
CoH was my first MMO and it has always been my "safe area", the game I always came back to. Even though I am playing it on and off, CoH forums are on ALL my browers!
Great game, maybe THE best I've ever played, good developers (especially after Jack left...), good comunity.
I remember flying for the first time ever.....
I remember getting my brother into CoH and spending hours playing with him, which made us closer.
I remember great brainstorming reunions with Tremere and Marut to finalize the Hamidon Strategy.
I remember killing Hami for the second time ever and Pep_Cat sharing a HamiO with me because I didn't get any and she believed the Raid leader should not go without one at the end. That was a BIG gesture back then.
I remember feeling disgusted with Jack about GDN and ED and argueing with him.
I remember coming back to the game after Jack left and feeling........feeling back home!
Thank you for all the good and bad times.
The memories will be fondly cherished.
To the Devs: You did a good job! Your game me thousands of happy hours and memories to cherish for all my life.
THANK YOU!
City of Heroes was truely the mmo of my dreams...no seriously I accually dreamed about it way back in my days where i thought neocron had great graphics. As City of Heroes developed it Became more and more like what i always say well this MMO would be perfect if only it had.... Well City of Heroes Had it.
It had Role play.. Pocket D was everything I could have wanted for a rp area. I can accually look at my characters and say...Yep thats what they look like in my head!!! My base was my imagination come to life i couldnt even do it right on SIMS.....
My Supergroup was like an extended familly. Id spend hours counciling people about thier rl lovelife, a few of my friends met RL love in game. Even the people who got on my nearves...you know who you are.... I will miss.
Been a subscriber for 8 years even after freedom...bought every costume pack cause it was worth it.
