Hello everyone!.
I am Bio-Flame, an old timer that started playing a few weeks before Issue 1.
DAMN...I haven't posted for like...5 years or so. Time does fly!
My home was the Infinity Server, I used to lead the very first successful Hami raids on my server.
I've since switched to Freedom and Virtue, but my "home" was always Infinity.
I started playing all these years ago. I can't help to reminesce on my memories......
I was finishing Medical School back then and now.... Now I have 8 more years, a soon-to-be fiancee (she doesn't know it yet, don't spoil it!), I am a Neonatologist and I work on an NICU and I love what I do....
Damn, time DOES fly by!
I remember thinking I'd never be a good doctor like my friends/teacher were, and here I am now. I remember thinking that CoH would last...forever. Alas...it would not be the case.
CoH was my first MMO and it has always been my "safe area", the game I always came back to. Even though I am playing it on and off, CoH forums are on ALL my browers!
Great game, maybe THE best I've ever played, good developers (especially after Jack left...), good comunity.
I remember flying for the first time ever.....
I remember getting my brother into CoH and spending hours playing with him, which made us closer.
I remember great brainstorming reunions with Tremere and Marut to finalize the Hamidon Strategy.
I remember killing Hami for the second time ever and Pep_Cat sharing a HamiO with me because I didn't get any and she believed the Raid leader should not go without one at the end. That was a BIG gesture back then.
I remember feeling disgusted with Jack about GDN and ED and argueing with him.
I remember coming back to the game after Jack left and feeling........feeling back home!
Thank you for all the good and bad times.
The memories will be fondly cherished.
To the Devs: You did a good job! Your game me thousands of happy hours and memories to cherish for all my life.
THANK YOU! -
Hey guys.
As my Fire/SD scrapper is getting to higher levels (currently 43), I am more and more falling in love with it. I am primarily a Tanker player but this guy is just so much fun to play.
So, as I get near level 50, I am starting to think about IOing him out. I already have 5 LoTG +7,5% recharge but other than that, I am not thinkinh about getting the very expensive IOs, EXCEPT the +3% defense PvP IO. I don't have the influence nor time to get the other PvP IOs or the very rare purple IOs. Well, I do but that's reserved for my main (Tanker).
So, with that in mind, I've tried to plan my IO build. I'd like input from more experienced Scrapper players.
I tried to build for defense cap (duh!) and for extra ACC (I am kinda obsessed with not missing) and for extra recovery and HP/regen.
I went with Aid Self instead of Hasten (the old debate I guess). What made me decide on Aid Self was the extra survivabilty, one more place to use Numina's set and also Hasten might have given me End issues.
As for Alpha Slots, I haven't made up my mind yet, but I am seriously considering +45% Damage Very Rare Alpha.
What do you guys think? Is this the way to go, or should I have done it differently?
Again, I am not a scrapper player, I am a Tanker player and I am used to being as tough and survivable as I can be and also playing very agressively and scrapper-locking myself
Any suggestions? All comments are appreciated.
Thanks all!

I see your point and I rather agree. I don't mean that nova doesn't have its uses and its strenghts.
My point is simply that, for all the things that you sacrifice to play in Nova form, what you get in return is not good enough. -
You seem to have misunderstood me and got angry.
I did not say not to use inspirations against LR. In fact, I said that I DID use them against LR.
I did not say that inspirations aren't useful or that they are "cheesy".
I did not say that inspirations are "cheats".
Likw i said in my post, if you had cared to read it, I use inspirations too and I don't think they are cheats. Your entire post is argueing against something I did not say. It's rather pointless since I didn't say any of those things.
Please, stop using fallacy arguments.
Again, I only said that I dislike people saying they are "soloing with inspirations". I have nothing against inspirations and I do use them. I did use them against LR.
I just think that saying "I can solo X with inspirations" isn't appropriate.
Like, I would say, I tanked LR with inspirations, or simply, I did STF on my tanker and Tanked LR.
Again, CMA, I think your reply is overly agressive when I stated clearly on my post that I have nothing against inspirations nor against anyone using them since i use them myself.
And I also said that I didn't intend to step on anyone's toes nor offend anyone.
Peace. -
Dude, I don't claim you can't tank LR, I just think that saying you soloed him with inspirations isn't quite "soloing" him.
If not, everyone can solo almost everything, including Blasters tanking LR.
And I don't think you need to get defensive, I am not trying to diminish your accomplishments. I also tanked LR on my Ice, my Granite, abd my Inv, all of them "with inspirations".
All in all, I think my thing about "soloing with inspirations" comes back from the good old days, when we used to say that Regen"solo tanking Hamidon" meant really that, Tanking Hamidon without any outside help or any inspirations at all.
I must say that the Scrapper Pylon Challenge also kinda like says what I did, soloing with no inspirations.
It's only a minor nitpick, really. No offense meant. -
I severely DISLIKE when people say "I can solo LR on my tank....with inspirations".
I know what people mean when they say that but in this game, soloing with inspirations isn't really soloing.
I mean, take purples for example. You eat 2 big purples and usually that's more defense than one good defender can give you. You eat 2 big oranges and that's usually a LOT more than most defenders can give you.
Having a full tray of inspirations (while being a clever play, no doubt about that!) is like having your own pocket (or more than one) defender. You will get defense, resistance, heals, endurance.....it's exactly the same of what a defender can give you..
So, saying "I soloed LR....with inspirations" doesn't really mean anything really. EVERYONE can do that. Hell, I suppose a blaster CAN also tank LR then if he used a million inspirations on his tray to get to the res and def cap, with a million more inpirations on his email.
(I am exagerating but I think you guys can see my point)
And what would that prove? That your blaster is tough? Or that the INSPIRATIONS is what really made that possible?
So please, with all due respect, don't say that you can Tank LR solo....with inspirations.
I know it's true to the letter but in spirit, in this game....it isn't.
PS - Just one minor thing. I don't mean people shouldn't use inspirations against LR. That's not my point. I use inspirations against him. Hell, I think he was designed with that in mind.
I just think that it's a lot different soloing LR and soloing LR with inspirations. Like, it's kinda like the Ritki Pylon thread for scrappers, you can be soloing but if you eat inspirations to keep you going (red, or blues or greens, whatever) it doesn't really prove anything. -
Mitigations:
Nova has flying but so does human form (inherent)
Nova has KB but so do human form attacks
Nova benefits from Cosmic Balance, but so does Human form.
Nova benetits less from Build Up than human form does (time spent in the animation to change to Nova)
Nova has higher range than human --> I think this is the only thing that nova has for it
So, most things that Nova form has, human form also has and sometimes it's the same, others Human form benetits more than Nova and only in one thing (range) Nova comes out on top.
Nova also trades ALL versatility (Pulsar, Shields, BU, Hasten, Self Heal and Heal other from Human Form, Essence Boost, etc etc etc etc....) for damage.
Again, it trades it all for damage. Now, tell me, do you think with ALL the things that Nova form sacrifices in order to deal damage is a good trade off?
Why is it that most PBs prefer to play Human form for damage rather than nova (aesthetics aside)?
Sure, Human Base Damage is inferior but in end, it doesn't really matter does it? Because ALL the other stuff that Human Form has more than make up for that slightly inferior base damage.
Just to be crystal clear: I don't think Nova form is useless. I Just think that, considering the things it sacrifices in order to be a "damage dealer form", I don't think the damage is on par with the sacrifices required to be in Nova.
It's just that. Nova form sacrifices a lot just to deal damage and those damage numbers are not good enough to justify the tradeoff. -
It is lacking some punch in my point of view.
It trades a lot just for that ability: to deal damage. And I don't think the tradeoff is for the better. -
I would say two things:
1- The difference between PBs and WS is greater than I thought it was!
YOu did a great job with this post!
2- Nova form is weak as a damage dealer. It should get buffed. -
I thought +4 mobs got +0% to hitbuff but +1.4 ACC mod.
So, since the equation is ACCmodx Clamp (Tohit - Defense)
The tohit will still be 50%, defense still 45%
50-45=5% (it can't get any lower than that).
So, if my calculations are correct it doesn't matter having more than 45% defense even against Incarnate content (unless specified mob as some kind of specific tohit buff, say like Nemesis vengeance, etc...).
Arcanaville, am I correct? -
Easy Answer First:
Tin Mage: Granite, obviously. Other than that, i would say a good invulnerability tanker, a good regen/defense WP powerset. Defensive sets just don't cut it in my experience, since every other tanker can also reach the cap through IOs (some needing more influence than others but they WILL get to the cap). So, Resistance sets overall would be better.
In Tin Mage, the AVs hit pretty hard for an Ice Tanker I think, especially when you have to tank Both Neuron and the two WarWalkers AVs at the same time.
Oh and Director 11, he's easy to tank. Just tank him on the side rooms. NOBODY should follow him when he runs away. Just stay there on the side room and he WILL come back.
Honestly, after i discovered that trick, Tin Mage became a breeze.
Apex: Willpower and Invulnerability. They have good defense and resist against BM damage. WP is especially good since it can resist quite a bit of time against the Hydras, courtesy of high regen.
Against BM, a Tanker is good to taunt her and make her come out of her blue flame. Her blue flame is very easy to avoid. Again, a WP tanker has an easier time due to the high regen if something goes wrong.
Granite against BM, I haven't done yet, but the slow might hurt. The defensive sets....I wouldn't like them too much.
PS - I haven't done Apex nor Tin Mage with my Fire or Ice tankers. And my Electric isn't at the cap yet.
Haven't bothered doing it on my Stone, it's all too easy...
PS II - I have done Apex more times than i can count (>100 shards and I have two tier 2s on one tanker) and Tin Mage also more than 20 times.... -
I play mostly only tanks: Inv, WP, Ice, Stone and Fire are all lvl 50s. Dark armour scrapper at lvl 50 (can't speak about DA tanks though) and a lvl 34 Electric Tanker.
Outside of Stone, with a fairly genery IO build (nothing fancy), I would say either WP or Inv.
WP is probably better, but it does require extra stuff like +hp accolades.
People can talk about personal preferences, which is fine I guess. But there it is true that there are some stuff that some tankers find it harder to do than others.
There are "holes" in each tanker powerset and some are wider and more common than others.
Invulnerability is a good all-rounder, with a nice God-mode.
Willpower is slightly better because it doesn't care about which type damage is being dealt but rather how much. The weaker taunt-aura is a non-issue since as a tanker, you should be using your AoE attacks whenever they are up and taunt should be fired often thus making the weaker taunt aura a non-issue.
Ice and Fire are quite good but with a generic IO build, there are lots of stuff that they will find harder to tank. I am not saying they can't do it, but it would require a more skilled player or more IO investment.
Which, if you used the same amount of IO investment and the same "higher skilled player" on a WP or an Inv, you'd get a better outcome.
Recently, the +4 baddies on the new TFs made life tougher on "pure" defense Tanker powersets. Not saying I agree with that TF design, I am just stating a fact. -
Willpower is slightly superior to Inv.
Like some people have said, on paper, they might seem even but on actual gameplay, I've never been on a situation in which my WP died and my INV wouldn't. BUT, I've seen the opposite, I've died on my INV on situations that with my WP I wouldn't have.
Regen is your friend. -
Damn....I thought it worked like the +heal effect from the alpha slot.
So it's back to the drawing board I guess... -
Wow. I didn't know about that.
Can anyone confirm that +set heal bonuses only affect a heal portion of a power, and not +regen, +maxhp, etc etc? -
Any suggestions from some MIDs min/max warriors?
-
Hello all.
I've been tinkering with my WP/SS Tanker build.
I've decided to go with 5 main goals:
1 - Have 5 of each +12%, 10% regen set bonus
2 - Try to have +heal bonus from Numina's Sets
3 - Try to be at the HP cap - 3500hp
4 - Have the bes regeneration I possibly can
5- Try to cap F/C and E/N defense
The alpha slot to use will be the Spiritual line (+recharge, +heal bonuses), not included in this Mids build since Mids doesn't have I19 yet.
So, the build would be:

Issues: Since mids doesn't take into account both the +heal bonuses from Numina's nor the Alpha Slot Spiritual (+heal), I am not sure I am over the hp cap.
Any suggestions, comments? -
Hello all.
I have a question about the +heal set bonuses (say, a 4 sloted Numina's will give +6% heal bonuses).
Now, does that bonus stack before ED or after ED?
Example: I have 100% heal (god knows how, but let's assume).
So, which one is true:
1- The +6% bonus will add up before ED, giving a total bonus of something like 101% (or something like that).
2- The +6% bonus is only added after ED, giving a total bonus of 106%? (and more 4 Numina's sets would give 112%, 118%, etc..)?
I ask about this because in MIDs it that +heal set bonus doesn't show in powers so I am not so sure about in game.
Thing is, if it only goes after ED, if I had five Numina's with 4 slots (+6% x 5 = 30%), would that be equivalent of like an extra heal enhancement? -
Inspirations is kinda like outside help.
With enough inspirations, a Blaster can become a tanker.
Ok, it's a slight exageration, but you know what I mean.
There's currently no Tanker that I know of that's able to tank a Tower-buffed LR without any buffs, any debuffs, any inspirations, any outside help.
Other than a Granite that is.
LR has too many buffs, damage, ACC and secondary effects.
I actually think he WAS designed with inspirations being part of the fight.
I might be missing some kind of uber-Purple-PvP IOed out build, but other than that, I don't think it can be done. -
I think Tower-buffed LR was trully meant to be Tanked with a Team, not solo, with a full array of buffs and debuffs. Inspirations were probably factored in too.
Remember, tower-buffed LR:
+ Damage, a monstrous amount of Damage
+ ToHit, enough to hit up to 75% defense
+Defense, a very high amount (don't remember how much), enough to make many powers to miss.
+ End Drain, sometimes worse than a Sapper.
All in all, Tower-Buffed LR hits too hard, too often, with too many secondary effects (+def, end drain, etc..) to be solo-Tanked without inspirations or outside help.
The fact that some Granites can is probably some kind of "mistake" that the Devs made.
Inv tanker cannot tank it without unstoppable and when Unstoppable crashes, bye bye.
WP can't take the huge burst damage nor the powerful end drain effect.
Ice Tankers are made obsolete just due to one tower, whilst the red tower will one shot him.
Fire Tankers will die fast too.
Shield Tankers, I've never Tanked LR yet, but from what I can read and from my mid-level experience with it, I believe it will be similars to Ice Tankers. One Shotted.
Electric Tankers can probably take 2 or 3 hits from red tower-buffed LR, but really cannot keep up with the damage for too long. -
First reply after Arcanavile!
YAY!
It's not a dev post, but it's the next best thing
(I've been wanting to do this years) -
Quote:Hah, you want to pair a stoner on task of LR with the towers? Really? Be real, LR buffed by the towers, will take down a stoner really fast, unless that stoner is healed, buffed or assisted in one way or the other. Sad stoner with no kin will be rapidly chased down by LR and made minced meat. My Ice tanker has done STF and tanked him fine. You show me a Stoner tanking LR with towers on with no help at all, not even insps, and show it on video or it did not happen. Bring it.
Matter of fact, you have a stoner you want to put up vs my Ice/ ?
As plenty of others have said, yes, it IS possible to Tank a tower-buffed LR on a stone tanker, alone, unaided, unbuffed, without any inspirations.
Is it TOUGH as hell? Does it require a GOOD IO build and player? Definately. But it is possible.
But it can't be done on an Ice tanker. It just can't.
Hell, it can't be done on ANY tanker that I know of, other than a Granite Tanker, with a SOLID build, with a good player. Even an INV tanker can probably only do it while unstoppable lasts and after it crashes, he's dead.
Tell, can you even TRY to tank a tower-buffed LR on your Ice tanker, unaided, alone, without any inspirations, unbuffed? You'll die on his first attack.
I know I do on my Ice tanker, and I am a solid player with a solid build. It can't be done.
Look, like I said previously, I have an Ice, a Stone, a WP, an INV, a Fire and a Dwarf-build Kheldian. My electric and shield aren't lvl 50 yet.
I don't even like my Stone tanker, I prefer playing my WP, my Inv or my Ice.
My Ice was my main for a long time until I rolled the WP.
So, before thinking that I am biased against Ice tankers, I am not. I am merely stating the facts, the truth as I see it.
I'd love that I could Tank LR on ANY tanker that I have (other than Granite Stone Tanker) without any inspirations, buffs, or healing. But I can't. It can't be done without outside help and/or inspirations...unless you're playing a Stone Tanker.
I didn't make the game, I didn't design LR and its towers.
But I don't fool myself. Ice Tanker can't do most stuff that other tankers can, namely Stone Tankers, Inv Tanker or WP tankers.
Again, the OP didn't ask what tanker I prefer to play the most, nor did he ask you what's your favourite Tanker. He asked for the NEXT best tanker, other than a Granite.
Whatever the answer may be (and I think it's a WP tanker btw), I know for sure that it isn't an Ice tanker.
That doesn't mean that Ice tankers aren't fun to play though. It only means that they are not the second best tankers. That's all. -
I was here back when Castle wasn't in charge and I remember those days.
The "good old days" were better in some things but a lot worse in many others.
Open comunication is one of them. Castle replied to us and was fair and honest about most stuff in the game.
I sometimes didn't agree with him but his honesty was and is appreciated.
I quit CoH back in GDN/ED (I5) and the Castle's good work (and BaBs and Positron's) pulled me back into the game after two years away.
He is one of the best things that ever happened to this game. CoH is a much better game because of him.
We should thank Castle for all the hard work he put into this game and we should apologize for all the cr*p we put him through at times!
I am sorry to see you go!
But best of luck to your life, professionaly and personally!
Thanks! -
Ah. Hm...pair Stone Tanker vs Your Ice Tanker, no inspirations.
Meet Lord Recluse, tower-buffed.
And then you'll see.
Ice is a very very strong set (I have one and I love it).
But it's not the strongest set and neither is the second strongest.
Not by a long shot.
Just saying that the OP didn't ask for a very strong tanker, he asked for the second best tanker.
And playing smart and playing well, you know that playing well is not limited to Ice tankers, right?
