I went with Aquarianne for my magical blaster.

Mr Energon

Confirmed altimaniac.

Blut Sturm (German for Blood Storm) Water/Storm. Although my powers are colored to be as natural as possible. So, no red water.

I nave a Traps/Water defender named Amberwaves (Amber waves of grain....)

And I have a tasteless anger themed character for which I have a name, but not the guts to actually make: Pissstorm. He'll probably be a blaster.

I went with Ehmi B'hk (Amoebic) after wrestling with a host of single cell organism/petri dish playoffs.

On Beta, I used Black Gold.

Superman, for instance, is pretty generic but he's old so we can skip that one. Batman, similarly, has the theme of a bat, but not the powers of a bat. Marvel's Cyclops has a name which refers to his eyes, not necessarily to his powers. Wolverine, similarly, has the fighting style of a wolverine but not necessarily the powers of one. Gambit's name has nothing at all to do with his powers, which are "make things explode, nor do Rogue's powers have much to do with her name. We have Bishop - a mutant able to absorb and redirect energy, who's named after a religious rank. We have Shard, who I don't even know what her powers are.

Sure, we have people like Spider-Man who has the powers of a spider, Magneto who has the powers of magnetism, Storm who has control over storms and so forth. But for every Cyborg and Beastboy we have a Raven and Robin, is what I'm saying. It's why I don't have a good idea of how common the names are. Are they more common in this game?
well, sometimes the names are metaphorical references to the characters powers. batman attacks by night, "flies" and inspires fear in people. that is a lot of what bats do (albeit the last one is due to misunderstianding, as bats are actually good for the ecosystem). and raven's powers are darkness and the occult, often taking bird like shape, so that one is not too far off. plus super is a form of superlative, super man is a "super" man, he is stronger, faster, has powers that dont even map to humans but we would like, and is shown as being at least well above average in intelligence, so he kind of is named after his power, being good at everything.

Also, I cant really say that parity really exists in names, off the top of my head. aqua man controls water/sea creatures, colossus is strong and big and metal, beast has animalistic agility and features, joker usues weaponized joke props. iceman, phoenix, johnny blaze, the iron fist, marrow, its pretty common to make either a literal or metaphorical reference, especially if you are going for golden/silver age characters.
id say the split is maybe 30/70 until you get in the lower tier guys, and that usually seems to be because they dont want to blow a good iconic name on a nobody.

Fantastic Four
Mr Fantastic - not
Invisible Woman - is
Human Torch - is
Thing - not

Avengers
Thor - kind of, being the god of thunder
Captain America - not
Wasp - is
Ant Man / Giant Man - is
Hulk - is
Hawkeye - kind of
Black Widow - not
Iron Man - not
Hulk - kind of

Justice League
Superman - was (he had no super powers, just was better at everything - strong, jumping, vision, etc - actual super powers came later)
Wonder Woman - like Superman, no powers as such just better at normal things
Flash - is
Green Lantern - is not
Hawk Girl - is
Green Arrow - is
Batman - not
Martian Manhunter - not
Aquaman - is
Atom - is
Black Canary - is

so maybe about half of the characters in comics are named something directly related to their powersets.

What, no Splash Gordon yet? Sheesh!

I haven't decided on a name or concept yet -- some of my names reflect the powersets, but not all. Depends on my mood, and the character concept.

On beta I used the name Butterbeer Bob.

Live I've set up two Water Blast toons:

  • Texas Oilman; with the powers colored "appropriately".
  • SeaWall; I left the colors at default.

Hurricane G (Gloria) is a pretty decent female emcee.

Shelldrake, named after the seamount of the same name off the New England coast.

Ok, well off the coast, you have to jump off the continental shelf to get there...

Actually, yes. Reserved the name weeks before.

Surprised not to see any naval characters cited: "Captain" this or "Admiral" that.

I went with my penchant for Golden Age patriotic heroes and rolled up revolutionary war ghost "Ensign Yank" on Liberty server, mixing the new water blast set with the new tricorn hat. A navy blue/gold trim open cowboy jacket with occult baron sleeves , white steam punk cravat/necktie, white tight (baggy texture) pants and shiny black leather boots make a passible revolutionary war naval uniform. Add epaulets, high collared cape and mask for flavoring.

I managed to snag the name Fountain on Infinity. Concept: a fountain statue magically brought to life (water/time, with time colored to look like mist).
I also made a rather long list in the Infinity Name Exchange thread. Here are some of the better ones that are still available as far as I know:

De Nile (for an Egyptian, of course!)
Surfin' Bird (because the bird, bird, bird is the word)
Guyser (the misspelling is intentional; it's for a male character)
Rivulette (again intentional, this time for a female character)
Suds (a FF/Water defender, maybe?)
River Kwai (I'm thinking an asian water controller. bonus points of you catch the reference)
Dam Hero
Dam Villain (generic, but still...)
Main Stream (the bane of hipsters everywhere!)
Babbling Brook (probably for a female water blaster who WON'T SHUT UP!)
Hydrophone (probably for a water/sonic corr or def)
Hydroelectric
Hydrokinetic
Angelfish
Clown Fish

My very basic interpretation of this phenomenon has always been that people who haven't been exposed to comics in years or decades (or at all) are doing the best they can with the knowledge they have--they're basically playing "Freedom Force Online;" then there are the people whose knowledge of contemporary comics is just fine, and they're having fun with puns.

On the flip-side are people with a penchant for contemporary comics or at least a substantive fourth wall (in your case), who like to build characters around origins that delve much deeper than a power set. Characters for which only their bios or Virtueverse pages could begin to explain the gist of their names. There are a WHOLE LOT of these people in the game, but I think threads about "punny" names probably translate better into the General Discussion culture than serious names and the origins that give rise to them--especially when you consider the veritable minefield of armchair critics that creators might be reluctant to expose their hard work to. You're welcome to join me on Virtue sometime, I could introduce you to a ton of cool folks who have spent a lot of time creating contemporary characters.

I've always been genuinely relieved that the City of Heroes multiverse is a place where you can find everything above. From a comic book nerd's perspective, there's room for all of it and much more. I would love it if I stumbled upon a new zone some day in another dimension populated by truly cartoon-like characters, or a Fable-like dimension, or an alternate time stream similar to Freedom Force. I may lean toward the contemporary era, but City of Heroes, in places, is already an amalgamation of homages to various eras and memes. I know that that the fabric of the multiverse is partly woven with puns, even if my characters aren't aware of it.
