So WB put JL movie into the works
Well they may be able to cast the "new" Superman and get Reynolds to do GL but no way are they going to get Bales to be Batman again without a dump truck full of cash. One thing that makes the Avengers is everyone but Banner is played buy the same actor from their individual movie. Even the secondary characters are played by the same actors.
If WB casts a bunch of random actors into a JL movie it's going to not feel right.

They might intend to do it the opposite way from the Avengers - use a JL movie to launch spin-off movies, with the actors cast as, say, Wonder Woman and Flash going to on star in any solo follow-ups.

City of Heroes comics and artwork
If they use the plot from the pilot episode of the JL/JLU cartoon of the alien invasion and the heroes coming together to repel it that could work.
Superman and Batman team up, they free the captive Martian Manhunter who then telepathically calls for help and gets Hawkgirl, Green Lantern, Flash, and Wonder Woman to arrive to join forces.
From there if this movie is a success they could then do solo spinoff movies.
But I think WB is better off copying Marvel's Movie Formula and have the solo movies build up to Justice League.
If a JL movie is just now put in the works it will likely be a couple of years out. Considering Dark Knight Rises is the last for Nolan & Bale I agree with the idea that they could do opposite what Marvel did and launch standalone movies from this.
Hint towards JL in the new Superman, use Cavill for Superman in JL, Reynolds for GL, cast a new Batman, then fill in WW, Flash and so on. This will work only if the movie's good. WB needs to wise up and realize that Marvel's done so well because they've made good movies, not by some luck or riding the wave of a fad.
Avengers had the right cast, right director and right marketing. WB has to get all that right for a JL movie to work.
If JL works this could *finally* put the DC Universe where it should be in movies. It always amazed me that Marvel had to fight to make their movies, slowing buying back film rights then building their own freaking movie studio. Whereas ALL of DC Comics is owned completely by a single established studio. Why the hell can't WB make some decent DC non-Batman movies?
A good JL movie could solidify the new Superman (assuming Man of Steel is decent), maybe give Green Lantern another shot at a franchise and launch Wonder Woman and Flash franchises. This could be worth billions to WB, better get it right.
A while back they had said they wanted to reboot Batman and use that along with others for a JLA movie. I really think WB has no ideal how to make it work, they are great with there animated movies but hard to translate that to the big screen.
I think with the Superman reboot they should try and use that with Reynolds as GL and cast others to get a JLA movie out and use that as a stepping stone for a WW, Flash and batman movies with new actors.
One thing they could try is using the new new Green Arrow TV show actors and have them fill smaller roles in the movie.
On the last note they should just start out with a bang and use Darkseid or a Braniac so they can have a big bad and lots of things for them to fight.
Freedom Server - Main = Lil Bug & way too many alts to list
I think bale should take the ropes like rdj did with the marvel side.i know he wont but he should.this would give it the continuity it needs to make it a success
Yeah, this probably isn't ever going to see the light of day.
It's basically a kneejerk reaction to the Avengers and when the hype for that dies, so will the push for a JL movie.
Six months from now, when the current top movie at the box office is about waffles, some Warner Bros. exec is going to look at this super hero project eating up WB money and say "Why are we putting so much into this Juice League thing when everbody knows waffles are what's hot right now?!" right before he orders JL shelved and orders a script for a waffle film.
Yes, movie execs are that stupid, fickle and lacking insight into trends beyond what is hot right at that moment.
.
I don't see any reason why a JL movie HAS to have solo tie in movies.
I do see issue when there are different versions of major characters (i.e. Superman and Batman) in unrelated movies at around the same time.
Might be better to go without Batman and Superman though, like the old TV movie did.
I really should do something about this signature.

Now let's look at DC comics and their perpetual reboot cycle that has led to the Nu52/NuDC where the characters are "re-imagined" yet again........solo origin movies that link to a JL movie seem to be more necessary due to DC's constant reboots.
As to a JL movie without Superman or Batman.....I don't think many fans will take to that idea, at least one of them must be in it.
Green Lantern: well there are 4 GL's from Earth in the GLC, Hal, John, Guy and Kyle. Any of them could be tapped for a JL movie. Alan Scott is on Earth 2 so he's out of the running.
Aquaman: the victim of many jokes and derision, yet in JL/JLU that was an Aquaman that one should respect. He was written as the KING of the seas and it showed. Also I always chuckle when they fought the Ultimen and the water one was surprised his attack didn't faze Aquaman. "King of the seas, remember?"
The Flash: Well Barry is the Flash and since NuDC/52, I don't think Wally exists yet. Jay Garrick is back on Earth 2 so he's out of the running. So Barry Allen will likely be the Flash for any movies.
Wonder Woman: a character that hasn't had any luck getting a movie past the script stage, much less casting. She may be best brought in during the actual JL Movie itself.
Martian Manhunter: he could also be worked in during the JL movie itself, I honestly can't see him able to support a solo movie.
Hawkgirl or Hawkman: either could likely join in a JL movie but I can't see either or both in solo movie.
Superman and Batman: how many battles were won simply because either or both of them were on team?
Martian Manhunter: he could also be worked in during the JL movie itself, I honestly can't see him able to support a solo movie.

Superman, in JLA#86 "I can count on one hand the number of beings in the known universe I would be afraid to face in open combat. Jonn J'onzz is at the top of that list. He is the most powerful being on the face of the earth."
And factor in his original story, being beamed here by the professor, taking the professors form, learning earth culture, being a detective (pretty much straight out of New Frontier) and you have a very good story.
The problem as I see it is that the writers would never write Jonn to his potential making him more of a low powered Superman.
To make it work, you need Kenneth Branagh to direct. And probably, Joss or Geoff to do the intial script, and a screenplay mulled over in a collaborative effort with Joss or Geoff and a screen writer not afraid to tell the studio to stick it.
Wait, what?

Batman: "I'm not sure what you are or where you come from. But my instincts tell me you're to be trusted. Make no mistake, I have a $70,000 sliver of a radioactive meteor to stop the one from Metropolis. All I need for you is a penny for a book of matches."

And to be compeltely honest, I like the Jonn is vulnerable to something the common man can get his hands on to defend himself with.
Just ask Paul Dini to head up the Justice League movie project division. All will follow.

No way this is going to be as big as the Avengers. Don't get me wrong i've always liked the JL. But with the mediocre Superman Returns, and the total flop of Green Lantern the future to the DC movie universe looks very grim.
One thing that Marvel did right was the way they produced their movies (with the exception of the unFantastic four). They made a movie, that happened to have a super hero in it. The movie quality was worth while, even if it didn't have that hero at the center of it.
Bale has said he won't play batman again after this movie. The actor portraying superman changes like the seasons in a year, and lets face it ryan reynolds is just a dope. They would need to recast the entire ensemble of the JL to make it worth while in my opinion.
Get it right DC! And catch up to Marvel!! With movies AND quality!!

I am well aware of Jonns weakness. Also that it is psychological. The fire doesn't drop him out of the sky like it does Clark. Remember in Tower of Babel when he was set on fire? He didn't just stop moving and cry on the pavement, he was still running around full strength, albiet not in his right mind, but full strength none the less. And the quote I used came from a storyline in which Jonn overcame his fear of fire completely.
And to be compeltely honest, I like the Jonn is vulnerable to something the common man can get his hands on to defend himself with. |
MM used to be quite vulnerable to fire. It's only been a psychological weakness in recent years. Once upon a time it would pretty much just shut him down, powers and all. I've got a goodly pile of reprints of silver age JLA and fire would really rock his world in those days.
Too many alts to list.

After three movies, one cannot blame Bale for not wanting to suit up as Batman again, also I don't think that the Nolan/Bale Batman would work as part of the JL. They have tried to keep this Batman as anchored as possible to the real world in terms of tech and foes and let's face it, JL foes can get pretty out there at times, Legion of Doom, Darkseid.....
As to Superman, well there are the lawsuits of course, but they have had casting trouble due to:
1. Christopher Reeve pretty much set the Superman standard
2. The curse known as stereotyping
3. The so called Superman curse given what happened to George Reeves and Christopher Reeve
4. Finding someone that projects the presence of Superman when suited up. When Christopher Reeve suited up as Superman many could look at him and say "Yep, he's Superman". Brandon Routh also had the "superman look" when suited up, not quite as good as Christopher but still not bad.
Remember long ago when Tim Burton was planning a Superman movie with Nic Cage in the role? Can't fault Cage for his enthusiasm, but he is NOT Superman.
Do an image search on Google using keywords Nic Cage Superman and get ready for some laughs......
As to stereotyping, how many actors and actresses could claim their career was both made and destroyed at the same time by stereotyping? Of course it also poses the question: was the character or show they were on so iconic either in a serious or corny way, or did they just not have the talent to break free of stereotyping?

What amazes me about how bad Superman Returns was is that it was directed by Bryan Singer, who did such a great job with X-Men I, II, and First Class. Maybe the Man of Steel movie will turn things around.
New story arcs coming soon (ARC IDs will be aded when I finish the arc):
So, you want to join the Hellions? (level 1-14 Villainous arc)
Sparks & Steel (level 5-20 Heroic arc)
and
So you want to join the Skulls? (level 1-14 Villainous arc)
For the record, Marvel did not do Fantastic Four. 20th Century Fox owns the movie rights to the FF just like they do the X-Men. Prior to the Disney buyout, Marvel couldn't raise, beg, borrow or steal enough money to buy back the film rights to those properties. With potential Disney money in the offing, Marvel could conceivably get the FF back, but Fox will never sell the X-Men.

1. Wasn't production rushed for whatever reason? Presumably due to the lawsuits and possible loss of rights.
2. They just don't want to escape the shadow of Christopher Reeve. Yes he set the standard for Superman, yes his accident and years later his death were tragic, but Routh was basically acting like Christopher acting like Clark and Superman. Nice performance but then when coupled with the fact that the story was basically Luthor recycling his plan from Superman 1, the fact that the super kid shouldn't exist, Lois still under the effect of the Superman-Jedi mind kiss and still can't do the math about who Superman is.........UGH.
Reasons for why the super kid shouldn't exist:
1. In the theatrical version: Superman gets depowered which presumably altered his DNA so that exposure to the yellow sun of Earth wouldn't recharge him. He and Lois then spend quality time together, so even if the kid were conceived would he have super powers at all? Also I would think that the pregnancy would have helped Lois regain her memories in full of the events of Superman 2, including Clark's identity. Instead she only remembers that Superman is the father and can't figure out Clark is Superman????? The kid was a bad plot idea for Superman Returns.
2. In the far better Donner version, Superman does the time warp at the end. He goes back to before the phantom zone is smashed and makes sure it doesn't get wrecked thus Earth is never attacked or conquered and he also makes sure that Lois doesn't do the math, thus they never spent time at the Fortress, Superman was never depowered and the Fortress itself would be undiscovered by Luthor and not destroyed at the end by Superman. So the kid is never conceived in this version.
Just by reading over the things posted in this thread shows me the many hurdles WB has with a JL movie being done outright.
Just by looking at the characters which you have to tie together within a single movie, all you really have to go with for the general public are:
Superman
Batman
Green Lantern
And you have zero build up for any of them knowing one another much less having a reason to form a league of heroes.
Then you have:
Martian Manhunter
Wonder Woman
Flash
all of which would have to be given at least a breif background and screen time to show the audience who they are (this inclusdes their personality, quirks, flaws etc...), where they come from, what they can do.
That's probably the maxiumum number of characters they could pull off within a 2 - 3 hour movie.
Then there's the antangonist(s) which will need at least a cursory overview of their motives probably used as the tie in for the reason the heroes need to band together.
It all seems a bit much to pull off and be done really well.
Look at what Marvel did to pull off Avengers. They started the foundation of this movie all the way back in Iron Man 1. They took their time to establish characters for the general movie going audience.
Doing everything from the opposite direction by starting off with a big team up movie that will hopefully pan out to solo films seems backwards. Remember that guy you saw in the movie with Batman and Superman where we told you about his story in 5 minutes? Well now here's that 5 minutes stretched out for 2 hours...
This will be rushed and horrible unless they have exactly the right people working on it being given total control. However, this is extremely unlikely given what happened to Green Lantern.
Simply put, DC is doing it wrong right now. They want the attention and success without putting in the groundwork.

thank GOD for Henry Cavil. should be phenomenally better, IMO. and looks more like supes to me than routh.
According to this article, a Justice League movie script had begun a year ago.
So I kind of called this in another thread, that WB would push forward a JL movie if Avengers was a hit but that they'd make (what may be) a mistake by not building it up like Marvel did with Avengers.
On the one hand, JL has a few more iconic characters that would be more prominent with a mainsteam audience. On the other hand, the mainstream audience has gotten used to Nolan-verse Batman which doesn't quite mesh with all of a sudden hanging around super-beings in an orbiting station.
I'm betting that they'll go with the "throw lots of marketing $" out there to get people in the seats, make it flashy and 3D so they pull a profit even if the movie itself turns out to be pretty poor. Marvel set the bar pretty high for the big team up super hero movie which will undoubtedly become a franchize unto itself, so I have a hard time that A JL movie with zero lead up would come within arms reach.
I hope I'm proven wrong though.
