Summer Event Preview Live!!1
I use Solar Flare alot on my PB...Solo. On teams I don't bother, but with the IO that will change.
I'm sure the Devs have considered, but in the last couple years it seems like they are less and less concerned about players being able to run Roughshod over content. It's like their attitude is: "Hey, we're designing the game challenge with the 'average' player in mind. With time and investment, you now have the means to create Superman and make most regular content challenges trivial. Your call - we don't care. We know most players won't." Most players using Shockwave or Solarflare won't ever have this new IO. If those that do become overpowered, well, that's the 99th way out 100 to do so these day. |
Hope we all will be having fun!
I may disagree with what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.

7 years playing and I have never been kicked from a team for power selection/use. And NO ONE is saying this will make cookie cutter builds moreso... I think the problem with you people getting supposedly kicked because of your powers is more than JUST that. |
No, I don't think this proc will make a huge difference to the ammount of people who are jerks over players using KB powers, but it does legitamise their jerkish behaviour
"The Devs hate KB too, that's why they made the new proc!"
Bone Smasher and Total Focus do more damage than any of the blasts except the Sniper (and knock doesn't buy you enough time to use that).

Enemies not attacking for much longerthen KD'ed enemies?
Then it's time for them to get off the cross, use the wood to build a bridge, and get over it.

Er, nope, not at all. I've been stupid enough in the past to join a pug from a blind with my energy/energy blaster only to enter a mission and before I have a chance to fire a single power and having the team leader say "KB Sucks" (Or words to that effect) and *poof* I'm kicked from the team. That wasn't an isolated incident either. Had plenty more teams that haven't cared, and never had complaints on my KB use on those teams, as I do tend to KB mobs towards melee types or back into groups if there is someone locking stuff down. KB is an extremely useful tool.

Ummm, false, KB foe, immedieatly hit the snipe and hit before he is even off the ground. Sounds like the best time to me. Enemies not attacking for much longerthen KD'ed enemies? |
Every power has their place...and in a capable players hands can be used to benefit any team.
I am just glad in my 7 years I have never ran into the players you have who kicked without cause...certainly hope you 1 starred them or something.
I've been kicked for having a KB Toon quite a bit about 2 years ago.
My Stalker faced the most punishment though I clearly remember seeing this in Team Chat during an ITF.
"Eww A Stalker. Throw it Back." *kicked* I remember staring at the monitor for 5 minutes in disbelief lol. So lets just say I was beyond a little excited when the stalker changes hit lol.
And the fool who says that devs hate KB because of this proc must think the devs hate immob due to the hold proc in the purple set.

I keep hearing of the difficulties people have leveling energy blasters, well mine, Neo-Chamber, was my first 50. Ok, it took me a year to get there, but that was more to do with my altism than any inherant problems in the set and joining my SG, GGRRR, was a boon in that it made me concentrate on just a few toons at as time rather than playing a different toon daily.
Playing any energy blaster is one of the most fun experiences I've had in game. It's so satisfying KBing a group of enemies but into geomatry elements like fences and railings and watching them failing there unable to to get off as I take my time finishing them off.
Then it's time for them to get off the cross, use the wood to build a bridge, and get over it.

The KB to KD proc is really weak justification that KB is bad. I have no doubt some people will try to use it, but as long as it's not accepted by the general community, it's just another line you have to read by someone who doesn't know what they're talking about.
I used to get kicked for my KB on teams, when I was inexperienced. Once I knew what I was doing with KB, I've never been kicked since.
I have no doubt that some leaders kick players with any KB at all. That number isn't very high. If someone is getting repeatedly kicked because of their KB, you can bet they're using it incorrectly and slowing down the speed of the team. I've kicked people that've spread the mobs before, but only after multiple warnings and advice on how to improve the team. Then again, I was kicking moreso because they wouldn't listen to the team leader. It's the same as getting an acid on a nade only SLAM. Can't follow instructions = kicked.
There are simple ways to ultilize KB effectively to improve the team. It's easy for people to tell when they have baddies KBed towards them for speed, KB angled for KD, or KB to save a teammate.
Not to sound rude, but I'd rather the game features in this game -not- be limited by stupid people and their inexperience/arrogance. They are not the majority and the game is not supposed to cater towards them.
More people want this proc than not, and that's reason enough for it's release.

PvP Redux is discontinued, for obvious reasons. Thanks to everyone who helped and joined.
Really hoping this works on illusion control's phantasm pet. A knockback power *I* can control I have no problem with. I took torrent on my dark blast corrupter and am amazed at how useful I found it.
A cone knockback power on a pet that just uses it randomly? Horrible design imho. I don't even bring phanty out when I team. Solo I'm forced to put up with it as I need the damage.
I think the devs even know it is generally a bad idea to give big kb powers to pets as I know they changed the thug and necro MM pet kb attacks (handclap and torrent) to knockdown. Wish they'd do the same to phantasm, proc or no.

Eh, not really what I was thinking of. More on the order of reverse knockback - enemies go flying, but it's towards you instead of away from you.
(Now that I think about it, an IO that made knockback powers do that could be pretty cool in it's own right...) -Morgan. |
Not sure how it would fit thematically with most melee sets (gravity melee, anyone?), but would still be awesome.
Or, a purple proc for taunt on tankers/brutes: pulls them towards you!
So we have yet another new enhancement set along with a second round of ATIOs but still no additional Targeted AoE sets?
You guys have been pretty good in the past at giving the players what they want within reason but I can't fathom why there is such a small selection of Targeted AoE sets, only 3 if you remove the purple and PvP sets. Development time can't be the reason seeing there have been many additional sets released since IOs were made available. The only thing I can think of is either: #1) You guys aren't aware of the lack of TAoE recipes #2) You guys don't care there is a lack of TAoE recipes #3) You guys mistakenly think the lack of selection is okay #4) You guys think the ATIOs and this new set make up for the limited selection. |

While I don't expect this unique IO to be global... I'd love to see a new knockback IO set introduced that features a proc like this... say with no secondary function... just "turns KB into KD for the power you slot this into". I wouldn't even care what the set bonuses were like. If I had a non unique IO that could turn KB into KD I'd gladly rip out a damage proc from those powers to put this in.
While I am not one of those people who views KB as "teh eval" I do find it terribly annoying on many characters. Not even so much the scatter but the whole knocking mobs out of range and me having to move... or knocking a mob with a debuff toggle into another group... I'd gladly use an IO that removes that annoying factor from the powers even if that means giving up slotting something else in its place or using another slot in the power if I hadn't intended to 6 slot it.

Knockback is a tool, one that has been nerfed repeatedly in the last year or so. Every time it becomes useful in some way, it gets nerfed. You notice that lava doesn't do damage to anyone anymore? That's because knockback became useful, even somewhat powerful. Can't have that. So bye-bye verisimilitude, lava is now harmless.
And now this abomination of an IO appears. If I had the Inf, I'd buy every single one that came on the market and destroy it. The fewer of these that exists, the better. It unbalances several powers that were dependent on their knockback to be allowed to be that much more awesome, like Tornado and several AoE attacks. But the worst part is, if this IO becomes even slightly common, it becomes a "requirement". Not officially, of course, but as you said, why not slot it in Crane Kick (except for losing the awesome "Kick badguy off high building" finishing move)? It's the "optimal" strategy. And that is terrible. Especially if it becomes a widespread idea. There's already too much unjustified stigma against knockback, this will not help that, at all. It will only make that problem worse. Much worse. What we need is MORE knockback. Useful knockback, though, none of this "chance to" stuff. And stuff to knock enemies into, other than the Scrapper. We need knockback, a standout feature of CoH, to be awesome. The ability to affect Archvillains would be a nice place to start. Knockback is the only status in the game where a mag 10,000 protection exists. Why is that? It's not like there's anything dangerous left to knock anything into. That's nerfed already. Frankly, I'm sorely disappointed that this IO even made it out of concept stage. It's such a bad idea, it should have been rejected outright. So many balance issues coming up... And the worst possible thing? That this means that knockback will never get looked at properly, and turned into what it could have been. Knockback is a superheroic staple. It should have been front and center from the start. The solution to the knockback "problem" is not to be able to switch knnockback off, it's to make knockback useful and desirable in several situations. |
The author of this post is speaking in generalities from his personal experience.
Your experience may vary.
I like KB and my favorite ice cream is mint chocolate chip. Are you saying that since you hate KB and you play characters with a lot of KB that you believe most people who hate KB play characters with lots of KB anyway, or are you saying most don't but you're an exception, or are you saying you believe that somewhere among the words I've typed I said that there exist no players that hate KB and play any character that has a lot of knockback, and you are attempting to provide a counter-example?

Damn, and here I thought that Arcanaville and I might have one more thing in common.
On-tangent: Knockback is a benefit when used intelligently, this is a FACT. Learning how to effectively manage knockback is part of normal gameplay for those that utilize it, this SHOULD BE a fact, but there are many stupid people out there. Fewer players use KB intelligently than otherwise, this is an opinion.
This handicap of an IO will make it easier for people incapable of learning effective KB use to play and be effective, this is a fact.
This buff of an IO will make it VASTLY easier to demonstrate how overpowered certain powers would be if they didn't knockback, but instead caused a very brief hold, which is mechanically similar to KD recovery time.
Please sell the KB>KD IO for some kind of merit.
The City of Heroes Community is a special one and I will always look fondly on my times arguing, discussing and playing with you all. Thanks and thanks to the developers for a special experience.

Can anyone tell me about how long the summer event mission is? I have plans tonight, but I wanted to try to fit it in beforehand.
Thanks for eight fun years, Paragon.
Hey Evil Geko asked for it lol. We all know that this is a test/experiment of some sorts.
I wished that all KB powers had a KB or KD option. That way I could KB solo and KD while on teams...but that's not possible so I will just have to settle with this IO.
This is already one set too many.
I wish this set didn't exist at all. If I'm EVER asked to have this set one any of my characters by someone who thinks knockback is the devil, I'm giving serious consideration to cancelling right then and there. This is a mistake and will only cause more social friction in the game. |

I don't mind controlled knockback. Energy Torrent I can handle; at least the enemies are still in the same general area.
With this set, I may actually respec my energy/energy and he'll finally be able to use his second AoE (Explosive Blast).
Thanks for eight fun years, Paragon.
