do you do the tutorial?

Much shorter tutorial than the last one. It is fairly epic. You get to run around by major heroes, fight a giant shivan. It is pretty darn cool.

But having run it a few dozen times, I just skip it now. I'm always a bit torn as to whether or not to do it, but I skip it.

I do it just to gain the level and extra power so I can be more effective when I take on Matthew's epic story.

Current active characters: Dragon Maiden (50+3 Brute SS/WP/PM), Black Widow Maiden (50+1 Night Widow), Catayclasmic Ariel (50 lvl Defender - Kin/DP), Quantumshock (50 lvl Elect/Energy/Energy), American's Defender (38 lvl Tanker - SD/Mace), Spider-Maiden (15 lvl Corruptor - RB/PD) & Siren Shrike (15 lvl Defender - Sonic/Sonic). My entire stable.

The only time I skip the tutorial is when I'm creating the character for some other reason than actually creating a character to play... which is very rare. But sometimes I just want a name-holder, for example.

Even then, I have characters standing around in the old and the new tutorials who may never finish them. ^_^ One is a name holder for my future staff melee toon.

If I want to play the character then an easy free level is always a good idea.

I skip it because I've done it enough times.

total kick to the gut

This is like having Ra's Al Ghul show up at your birthday party.

I skip it. Not least because you don't "fight" the shivan. You sort of whiff at it as airstrikes get called in. (Plus, at least that I recall, the other shivans in there don't count toward MiB. Which I actually wanted early for a character.)

Did it once both sides. Don't intend to do it again.

Yes.

The development team and this community deserved better than this from NC Soft. Best wishes on your search.

Same here. I can be setting up my power trays the way I want them during the dull parts.

I used to run the old tutorial, but I skip the new one every time. It is NOT a faster way to gain a level than defeating all of five minions around Atlas Park, and it's just godawful boring. I get that it's trying to be "exciting," but it ends up feeling like the guided tour of a much more excited game.

"And on your left, you will see Sister Psyche (who may or may not be dead) and Back Alley Brawler (who may or may not be in the Freedom Phalanx). Press a button if you would like to see some Shivans defeated. On your right is some shocking but generic scenery of destruction. Up next is 'an exciting battle.' If you wish to observe, feel free. Otherwise, please return to the group within the next five minutes. Finally, please be aware of how to give us money. This is vitally important and you will not be allowed to continue unless you prove you are aware of how to give us money. This concludes your guided tour of City of Heroes. Be well!"

As far as I'm concerned, the tutorial is a waste of space. It teaches us nothing, it doesn't require us to do nothing and it's just pretty pictures and famous names for nothing more than the "wow factor" they bring.

I used to run the old tutorials all the time, if only for the badges and the two free big inspirations.

The new one I ran a few times, but now, I don't really see the point. I don't need to be taught to play, I find the giant shivan fight more tedious than exciting, and there's nothing to be gained from it, so I don't bother.

And I've found that an even faster way to get that first level out of the way is to go beat up literally two groups of Hellions. In the quick-spawning area where Matthew first sends you. Sometimes I get the mission from him first, sometimes I go straight there without ever talking to the contact. I'm crazy that way.

FUN FACT: That burst of light when you level up is actually the effectiveness escaping from your enhancements all at once.

It might be worth playing if you actually needed to push buttons or be awake or in the room for the giant shivan fight.

If someone is waiting on me I won't do it, if no one is waiting on me then I'll run through it.

I run through it every time. Would rather run the tutorial, feels like I'm part of something new than street sweep 5 baddies. But having said that, to each their own.

Posted

I've always done the tutorials. Free level. Who's gonna pass up that?

Posted

I ran the new tutorial a few times but I actually get more enjoyment fighting the mugs in Atlas Park to get to level 2 than running the largely on-rails tutorial experience.

Posted

I like to do it just so that I can enter the sewer trial with three powers instead of two.

Posted

On my villains I always ran the old Breakout tutorial. It made me get into the character.

On my heroes I sometimes ran the old tutorial, depending on how heroic I saw the character.

Don't really run the new one. The dramatic part doesn't go with my "new up and coming hero/villain" mentality that I tend to have for my characters.
