Do you like making lots of characters or playing just one/a few?
True story.
I once had a character I enjoyed so much, around level 25 his story started to flesh out to include a sidekick.
I created the sidekick and got him to 25, then ended up playing him exclusively for a while. I eventually developed the story to have the 'Hero' be injured and end up passing the mantle to his sidekick.
At level 45 I bought a rename token, buried the hero, and took up the mantle!
Ended up being one of the more engrossing tales I've created over the years.
Maestro Mavius - Infinity
Capt. Biohazrd - PCSAR
Talsor Tech - Talsorian Guard

My name sake has been rerolled into a different powerset 10-15 times, and made it to 50 about 8-13 of those times (just couldnt get into AR and Archery ). But that's more me trying to find just the right feel for her (and why I make some of the suggestions I do )
Really that's my main character and most played, and it's often times funny to see people say "I thought you were [insert this AT and Powerset combo here]" and have other people respond "That was last week"
Needless to say, Paragon Studios has made some money off me for rename tokens.
I do come up with other concepts that I quite enjoy, but don't stay with as often for different reasons and of some of those, I've rerolled into new powersets as well.

At this point on my home server, I have 33 characters. Of those, 12 are non-50s, and of those, 10 are locked to someone else's progress. So yeah, I'm an altaholic, but I do make sure my characters get some love.
I've gotten 82 toons to lvl 50, of those I only have 8 50s left (the rest deleted). I don't really make any other toons unless I plan on IOing, accolading, and incarnating it out. Of my 8 toons, 1 is my namesake, 1 is my main, and the other 6 are my TF/trial runners. I typically only play any of em if they need some sort of progression.
I agree with Wing Leader, once you find your "One" you don't really play other characters.

That's wicked cool and heartwarming. Would definitely make for interesting an interesting long time RP or story.

I have 20 50's and counting. When I make a new one, I usually play it up to 50 or if it doesn't make it that far it'll get deleted or shipped off to a random server. I haven't had alot of time to play this past year so my leveling speed has slowed alot. I have three projects I'm working on and they're all in the 30's and I've just about leveled them evenly and one new concept to make. Whenever I get something to 50 I'll work on getting it IO/Incarnated out before I work on anything else.
I have three 50's I play regularly when I'm not in the mood to play a lowbie. After I get the 4 I'm working on to 50, I'll most likely stay away from the low level stuff until some new great powerset comes out that catches my attention. I did reroll my BS/Inv scrap into a TW/EA scrap recently. That's the only time I've ever deleted something high level because a better thematic set came out.

Take the Magic: The Gathering 'What Color Are You?' Quiz.
In total I guess somewhere between 35 and 40 characters, most on my main server Defiant.
Got 16 of them at 50, most of them alpha slot unlocked but only a few with some IO sets and two so far with any incarnate unlocked and slotted beyond alpha.
Of those that are at 50, 8 of them are dominators, which have been my long term favourite archetype. More recently though most of my time has gone into my Kheldians - they are right at the top with dominators at the moment as archetypes I enjoy playing.
At any given time I probably rotate between 3-6 characters, but which characters that may be varies over time.

I don't really have a main. My gig is that I only get characters to 50 who I really do enjoy playing. I don't stop enjoying playing them when they get to 50, so I tend to keep playing them, which leaves less time to create and level new characters.
Before I9 and inventions, I was not this way. We had much less repeatable content back then, and there were no long-term goals to shoot for, so even though I still enjoyed my characters I played most, playing them at 50 was too listless. As a result, I tended to stop just shy of 50 with them and only break them out for special stuff. I created alts instead.
By the time enough content and goals existed to motivate me to play characters at 50, I had already created a decent stable of alts. I have hit 50 on most of the ones I really enjoy, with a couple left who I have trouble getting to from playing the 10 that have already hit 50.
Most of my time is spent playing one of those 10 50s.

I have about 78 characters.
On Virtue.
Many of my other free slots on other servers are filled too.

Lots..
The hard things I can do--- The impossible just take a little bit longer.
If numbers are so much more important than a teammate who is fun to play with, forget about the game altogether and go play with a calculator instead. -Claws and Effect-
I tend to rotate between a handful of heroes and play them thoroughly.
Initially, I was clearly not an altoholic; I was a piker.
But after playing for nearly 7 years, I have 10 lvl 50s, another half-dozen who could ding 50 at any moment and some heroes that I realize that I have not logged onto for six months or more.
I have probably around 32 heroes total now. Does having that many qualify me as an "altoholic" or am I still a piker because of how long it took to get that many?
"How do you know you are on the side of good?" a Paragon citizen asked him. "How can we even know what is 'good'?"
"The Most High has spoken, even with His own blood," Melancton replied. "Surely we know."
I have 10 characters across all servers that I take seriously. All of them have fully fleshed out backstories and concepts, costumes I spent dozens of hours designing, top-tier powerset combos, >10bn inf all-T4 incarnate builds, and what I consider good names. Quality over quantity. But I don't have mains or self-insert characters, either. All my characters ought to be just as worthy of my time.
I make a lot of characters and focus on whichever feels the most fun at the time. Because of this I have characters covering all lvl ranges spread among the servers, but only 4 lvl 50s.

Then, perhaps your butt cheeks will relinquish their grip on your chin." -The_Zekiran
Define "lots". I have 44 toons, mostly on Victory, and around 20 or so 50s.
This does not seem excessive.
Agua Man lvl 48 Water/Electric Blaster
"To die hating NCSoft for shutting down City of Heroes, that was Freedom."
When I still has two accounts, I think I had something like 130 characters. Not sure what the count is today. I think I have something like twenty-five 50s (although only about a half-dozen are level-shifted...don't really care for the Incarnate content).
Some of the other games I play have very limited numbers of available character slots...and it's quite an adjustment for me!
"And in this moment, I will not run.
It is my place to stand.

Altaholic.
Alts for me, though I typically focus on only a small handful at a time. Right now I'm playing 3-4 of them seriously, and when they reach 50 I'll start working on new/previously made but backburnered toons.
Suggestions:
Super Packs Done Right
Influence Sink: IO Level Mod/Recrafting
Random Merit Rolls: Scale cost by Toon Level
I have about 45 characters, but I generally pick about 5-10 at a time and rotate among them. No such thing as a "main."
34 heroes,
20 villains, Victory, Justice, Infinity, Virtue, Triumph, Exalted -- some more active than others
I started off just playing one charactor and when i got her up to lvl 50 i then started another but did not stick to playing just one, i played with several until one would strike my fancy and i would take them to fifty after 12 or so 50s i am still pretty much doing the same, i do not deleate the alts that didnt strike my fancy at the time, i do infact give them several tries to get me excited with them.
Triumph Charactors: Tabby Cat: 50 Claws/Regen
Isabella Ice: 50 ice/ice
Wondderland: 50 ice/cold
Mindfull: 50/Kin
Usually I have 1 maxed out "main" toon who I play 3-4 nights a week, and 1 alt who gets the rest of the playtime. The alt changes every few months. The main has only changed once.
I gotta make pain. I gotta make things right. I gotta stop what's comin'. 'Least I gotta try.
I am one who focuses more on concept then anything else when I create a character. Some concepts get shelved for months while I try and find the right power sets to go with them.
However now days I really am rather tied to a number of my older characters who almost like a real heroes mask have become 2nd identities I oft times feel compelled to take up just to make sure the city is not deprived thier presence.
A have 15 alts - all thematically connected, and created a Supergroup for them.
I have another account and frequently dual box so I can play them together, experimenting with their different powersets. Many were created as 'side kicks' to my favorite characters. I see it as a challenge to create unique and visually different characters.
